Coming out in November 2007 is SOCOM: Confrontation for the Playstation 3. Unlike the Playstation 2 SOCOM titles, SOCOM: Confrontation is online only. Up to 32 players can play online on five North African themed maps, including a remake of Crossroads from SOCOM 2. Sony plans to release additional map packs for SOCOM: Confrontation in the Playstation Store. Something else unusual about SOCOM: Confrontation is it will be sold with two different SKUs at two price points. You can purchase SOCOM: Confrontation online as a downloadable game in the Playstation Store or you can buy it on a Blu-ray disc at a local store. While Sony hasn’t announced a price point for either release, the retail version is likely to be more expensive, but it will probably come with extras. It was inevitable that Sony was going to release SOCOM on the Playstation 3, but I wonder how fans will respond to SOCOM: Confrontation being online only.
Sony and Slant Six Games have another SOCOM title in development for the PSP, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike. Unlike the other SOCOM games you control a team of units and put them in position to attack. When you’re ready to execute a plan you can signal SEALs positioned high on a mountain to attack with sniper rifles and another group of SEALs to rush into a base.
You can see some screenshots of SOCOM: Confrontation and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike past the break.
