Square Enix released another Switch 2 port of one of its existing JRPG entries, which means there’s another option for playing the Star Ocean: The Second Story R remake. It costs $49.99 and is available now. However, it isn’t possible to get an update patch or upgrade pack for the existing Switch release. This reveal comes ahead of a planned 30th anniversary live stream for the series on July 19, 2026.

Square Enix didn’t mention anything about why there’s no upgrade pack or backwards compatibility. However, it does track, as the Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 Switch 2 versions involve similar situations. Someone grabbing this port won’t be able to continue their save.

Here’s the trailer for the Switch 2 Star Ocean: The Second Story R release that confirms the release. Presumably, there will be frame rate and resolution updates.

While this new version of the game is full-price, the Switch one is on sale. Until July 17, 2026, the cost is knocked down to $24.99

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is available for the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, and PC. The original game showed up on the PSP, and Second Evolution versions showed up on the PS3, PS4, PSP, and Vita.
