Stop the presses! Sony is dominating the scene

Inbox overload here. After posting about Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony sends over a release saying the NPD data suggests they are the big winner. SCEA managed to ring up $1.61 billion in total sales, which is split between 2.8 million units of hardware, 22.4 million units of software and 6.9 million in peripherals like extra controllers. On top of that the Playstation 2 outsold all other home consoles during December including new consoles from their “competition” and the Playstation 3. Speaking of the Playstation 3 it broke records selling more consoles than either of the other Playstation consoles during its first two months of availability. In defense of Sony the PS2 did have a strong holiday line up. Games like Final Fantasy XII, Guitar Hero II, Bully and tons of cheap Greatest Hits titles makes the PS2 an attractive purchase for those that didn’t own one previously. Also I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Playstation 3 “shattered” sales records compared to the PS1 and PS2. Both of those consoles were also released in short supply and they were equally difficult to get.
