Sumo Digital On Making A Team-Based Kart Game, Adding New Wisp Items, And More

Sega held a press event for Team Sonic Racing today, where Ben Wilson from developer Sumo Digital talked about the process of development behind the new team-based racing game. [Thanks, GamerHubTV!]   In the interview, he talked about how, as the first team-based game in the series, the team had to come up with things that players could do frequently to engage with their teammates, in various situations, like whether you were near or far from your teammates. He mentioned, for example, one strategy where you could have Power-type characters plow through dangerous terrain and create a slingshot path for teammates to follow behind.   He also elaborated on new items based on the Wisps and more, which fill different purposes not previously seen in the series. The Quake Wisp will create a set of hazards in front of the first-place player, and while it will slow down them, the first-place player has a chance to dodge all the obstacles to avoid getting spun out, essentially making the “blue shell” item skill-based. The Laser Wisp shoots a powerful beam that must be shot at enemy team players for half a second before it can successfully spin them out.   Check out the full interview below:   Team Sonic Racing releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 21, 2019.
