Super Hydorah aims to offer no shortage of complex boss fights as players work to stop the attack of the bio-mechanical Meroptians, with thirty-five huge warships, plants, and living machines all waiting to crush the player’s ship.
Super Hydorah offers twenty-one levels of creature-blasting shmup action, but these are further subdivided into thirty-five sublevels, each of which ends with a huge boss for players to tangle with, either alone or cooperatively. Each of these creatures has been designed to push players hard, requiring many hits to take down as they layer the screen with various shot types, having multiple stage patterns for players to learn if they hope to live.
If a particular boss becomes a sticking point for players, though, they can always try to find an alternate route through the game’s open-ended stages. Super Hydorah’s stages are non-linear, letting players choose different paths through each stage on the fly, and they can also choose which stages they wish to battle through depending on the route they take through the game.
Super Hydorah’s retro-inspirations affect more than the visuals, as the game features a sixty track soundtrack to fuel the gunfire. These may be all that keeps the player going in some instances, as its developer, Locomalito, is known for making challenging games.
