IBM Japan announced a new project, called Sword Art Online: The Beginning Sponsored by IBM, a dream project that aims to bring Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online light novel and anime to virtual reality. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

Sword Art Online: The Beginning will aim to bring the VRMMO world of Sword Art Online, and at an event where they’ll demonstrate IBM’s latest technology, we’ll get to see “what games of the future would be like using Cognitive Computing?” They also have registration for event participants on the official website. It’ll take place on March 18 through March 20.

Using both, Cognitive Computing “Watson” and the high-function cloud service “SoftLayer,” IBM will get event participants and scan them to create a 3D model as their avatars, and they’ll get to participate in a virtual reality atmosphere in an online system.

IBM will use this opportunity to show off their latest technology and how it can bring a big change to business and life, with an experience that can give you a taste of the future and beyond.

Again, Sword Art Online: The Beginning Sponsored by IBM will not use a controller, but it’ll be controlled by moving your own body. “Something completely foreign from any other video game experience,” and “by getting to experience being chased by a monster, I hope people will wonder more about the future of virtual reality gaming,” were some quotes shared by Reki Kawahara after trying out a trial build of the project.

The below is a video that was prepared for the project:
