Taichi Inuzuka Details Dragon Quest Wars

imageDragon Quest Wars is a departure from the Dragon Quest series. This curious title isn’t a RPG or even a strategy RPG. Dragon Quest Wars is a simplified strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems as a DSiWare download.

We asked Taichi Inuzuka, Producer, how the project got started and what goals he had in mind while developing Dragon Quest Wars.

How did the partnership with Square Enix come about?

Taichi Inuzuka, Producer: It has long been my hope to create a simulation game with Dragon Quest, but it has been difficult to put things together. However, this time, we could partner with Intelligent Systems who has a proven track record with simulation games, and the plan came together.

What goals did you set when designing Dragon Quest Wars?

We consciously designed and created this game to convey the fun of simulation games and to provide a gateway to users who’ve never played simulation games.

The Dragon Quest series has a ton of monsters. How did you decide which ones to use?

We selected them based on recognition among users and their attack balances.

image What team is your favorite to use?

I like a squad of Dracky, Healslime, Golem, and Dracky. If you line them up vertically, you can invade close to your enemy’s territory with one push. So please try using them.

Dragon Quest Wars is already out in Japan. Do the North American and European versions connect to the same server for worldwide play?

Yes. Through Wi-Fi Connection, users from Japan, North America and Europe can play together.

image When I played the Japanese version of Dragon Quest Wars online I noticed a lot of people use three or four golems in their group. Even though golems take damage when they attack they’re tough to beat! Can you give us some golem crushing tips?

Golem units don’t have magic abilities and also don’t have any ways to defend against magic. So, if you strategically use like Chimera’s dodge, Hammerhood’s counter attack, and attack magic such as Sizz, Frizz, and Crack, then I think you would be able to win. Also, using Oomph plus sweeping attack will be an effective way to give damage in one shot.

Are you considering expanding Dragon Quest Wars into a retail game or releasing future DSiWare installments with more monsters or maps?

We do not have any specific plans for that, but we would like to consider it if we receive many demands from the users.
