There is something special hidden away in Tetris Effect. The game sets itself apart from other installments with its skins, which are themes that change the appearance of the blocks and surroundings and sounds of its songs and sound effects as someone plays. If people play on the weekend after a the community goal of a Ritual, a special in-game event, is hit, they can then temporarily access the Tetris Effect 1989 skin that greatly resembles the Game Boy version of the game. It will appear at the end of their list of available skins in Effect Mode. It can also be unlocked permanently.
Mark MacDonald, Vice President of Production and Business Development at Enhance, Inc. posted about the Tetris Effect 1989 skin on Twitter.
We at @enhance_exp don’t comment on rumors and speculation about Tetris Effect, especially not on reports of a "secret stage" quietly unlocking during the Weekly Ritual when the community goal is reached, or unlocked permanently if you… well yeah, like I say, no comment. #1989

With regards to the “unlocking” portion of the statement, playing through the Journey and Effect modes in Tetris Effect gives players experience and allows them to level up. As you hit new levels, you eventually earn things like new avatars and this skin.
