The Challenge In Extreme Exorcism Is Dodging Your Past Selves

Golden Ruby Games has announced that its action-platformer Extreme Exorcism will be coming to a few more platforms. Previously, it was confirmed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Now, however, we know it’ll also be coming to PlayStation 3 and Wii U.

In Extreme Exorcism, you play as Mae Barrons who is a medium who exorcises ghosts with shotguns and rocket launchers rather than, you know, the more traditional crystal ball and séance methods. It turns out that the ghosts have a little unexpected trick up their spectral sleeves too.

What the ghosts do is copy your moves from the past as you progress. So, with every ghost that you eliminate, another one appears that mimics your previous movements. This keeps on happening until there are dozens of yourself bouncing around the small 2D arenas. Therefore, your greatest enemy in Extreme Exorcism is yourself.

“The ghost mechanic was created temporarily as placeholder enemy AI,” explains Michael Christatos of Golden Ruby Games. “Initially a quick fix, we realized that when players are forced to fight against themselves, they actually face more of a challenge. Giving everyone infinite ammo and a one hit one kill, it’s up to you to not only survive for as long as possible, but to try and remember every action you performed in the previous rounds.”

Extreme Exorcism will ship with its single player mode, a Challenge Mode with 50 challenges to beat, and a multiplayer mode to try out. The multiplayer mode is where things get really chaotic. You can play in co-op with up to three other friends, or have it out in 4v4 deathmatches. Imagine how many ghost versions of all of you there will be – you’ll have to dodge them all.
