The Game Formerly Known As True Crime: Hong Kong Will Come Out Next Year

Square Enix picked up the rights to True Crime: Hong Kong from Activision and will be releasing it under a new name.

When? 2012, says Square Enix Europe’s blog, which wasn’t part of the initial announcement. Modnation Racers developer United Front Games will continue to develop the title.

“We’re really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios and their excitement on the game means a great deal to us,” said Stefan Wessels, President, United Front Games in a press release. “This is a game we are so passionate about and we believe that together we can fulfil its full potential and deliver something really special.”

“There’s an incredible new game engine, a rich story with deep and complex characters and gameplay features which have simply never been seen at this level in an openworld game. We have thoroughly assessed the project and are very well aligned with where the game needs to go in order to be successful. Our team has a history of working with premium independent studios and we believe we can work together with United Front Games to make this one of the stand-out titles in the genre,” Lee Singleton, General Manager, Square Enix London Studios wrote.

The game formerly known as True Crime follows Detective Wei Shen as he tracks down the triad on Hong Kong Island. Activision hasn’t said much about the game since canning it, but we dug up pages of the games script which give us a better idea about the story. (Part 1, Part 2)
