Before Square settled on The Final Fantasy Legend, they thought about calling it The Great Warrior Saga.

That scan and lost box art come from “Video Game Quest”, a 1990s book that attempted to catalog every video game released at the time. While going through the process, the author added a few unreleased games and recorded major changes like The Great Warrior Saga. The Great Warrior Saga is closer to the game’s original title Makai Toushi SaGa, but it’s obvious why Squaresoft, a fledgling company at the time, chose The Final Fantasy Legend.

The “1 or 2 alternating” players bit is more puzzling. Did Square or the author think passing a Game Boy to another person during battles made the game multiplayer?

Happy 20th birthday (next month) SaGa!
