Nintendo announced a release date for the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time remake during The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8, 2026. It will show up in 2026 as expected, with the exact date being November 5, 2026. This comes after the game’s first reveal at the June 2026 Direct that took place around Summer Games Fest. It also meant a gameplay footage that offered a better look at Kokiri Forest for the action-RPG. The title screen theme will also be on Nintendo Music today.
As with the original game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time follows Link across two time periods. After he dreams of Ganondorf pursuing Zelda, he gets involved in a quest to help her, protect the Triforce, and save Hyrule. One of its key mechanics involves playing as the character both as a child and young adult. This is the second remake, following one for the 3DS back in 2011, and features a new art direction. The footage here showed child Link in Kokiri Forest. We got to see the new camera controls, and his new design for the game. We also got to see him speak to Saria and her new look, and the Deku Tree gameplay footage showed the new Navi. Link will be able to jump at will in this version, motion controls are an option for aiming, and a Threads of Time feature can be checked to see where you should go next. Instead of rolling, someone can dash to make him move more quickly. Ocarina gameplay footage teased a songbook, a Sun Song that can change the time of day, and the ability to hum to play a song due to the system’s mic picking it up. If you purchase the Hori playable Ocarina Nintendo plans to sell, that can be used to play it in-game.

This marks the third mainline The Legend of Zelda game with Switch 2 exclusive elements. After the system launched, Nintendo released Upgrade Packs for the Switch games Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. There is also the Musou spin-off game Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment on the system.
