As part of a new Nintendo Ask the Developer interview series tied to Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Director Ryutaro Takahashi shared that the team used the user-generated content system (UGC) to recreate their offices and make a Red Pikmin pet for their Miis. He also mentioned the game contains “nine years’ worth of ideas” and they “ended up spending six or seven years” developing the UGC systems. He also confirmed that babies in families with extensive customization and face paint will inherit their parents’ traits and one of the Little Quirk attributes someone could give to a Mii is “break wind.”
The custom creations came up when discussing customization elements. The Takahashi and the developers who took part in the interview shared screenshots and details about what the team made with the Island Builder and Palette House UGC creator elements. The island shown off was called Development HQ Island. Takahashi noted that the creator elements meant “each desk is a Mii character’s home.” Programming Director Takaomi Ueno also brought up some items they added with the in-game creator, like the “Ryutaro Takahashi staff security card” and “pay check” items they could give to Miis as gifts. It was after that when Takahashi brought up the custom Red Pikmin pet a member of the team created. He noted, “That’s another example of UGC. You can create your own pets and give them to your Mii characters. We created Pikmin as pets since they’re familiar to us, and our Mii characters were taking them for walks.”

The time spent making the UGC system came up after the team shared details about their custom island. Ryutaro Takahashi stated, “We originally planned to finish the UGC tools in about a year and a half. But because we wanted players to enjoy the game simply by observing the Mii characters, we came up with more and more ideas as development progressed.” He then noted, “We ended up spending six or seven years on it.“
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will come to the Switch on April 16, 2026.
