This game will be based on the sixth mainline Touhou entry, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, which originally came out for PC in 2002. It was also the first Touhou game that ZUN released for Windows PCs. Players can choose between Reimu and Marisa as the available playable characters in this shoot ’em up game.

The trailer also revealed that this remake will let players choose between the original Classic tracks and the newer Arrange versions, both composed by ZUN. This remake will also include the original Classic release of Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

Nintendo has also uploaded a standalone version of the Nintendo Direct trailer for Touhou New Classic: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on its Japanese YouTube channel.

Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is coming to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC digitally on September 10, 2026. The mainline Touhou series is also readily available on Steam, with the 20th mainline entry Fossilized Wonders released in 2025.
