Back in February 2026, Ufotable teased an announcement related to the Tales of series and its 30th anniversary, however it turns out it is working with Production IG on 188 character illustrations rather than a new anime. The promised April 3, 2026 reveal involved a YouTube trailer confirming the new art and that the first series that will be depicted will be Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Xillia. It didn’t note when those images will start to appear, and comments are turned off on the video. An official social media account is also open for this project.

The announcement did explain a few details about the 188 illustrations we’ll see referencing Tales of games characters from entries like Phantasia and Xillia. Two artists confirmed to be part of it are Akira Matsushima and Tokuyuki Matsutake. The former worked on both the anime adaptations of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Zestiria, as well as Maria Watches Over Us and Demon Slayer. The latter worked on the Tales of Phantasia and Vesperia anime, Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie, Psycho-Pass, and Kingdom. Ufotable and Production IG didn’t note if there will also be merchandise featuring the 188 illustrations.

Here is the announcement trailer for the Ufotable and Production IG Tales of character illustration project. At the end, we see Mint Adenade, Cress Albane, Milla Maxwell, and Jude Mathis from behind.

In terms of game news, the next release is a Switch 2 version of Tales of Arise. That port will launch on May 22, 2026. It will include the DLC expansion.

The Ufotable and Production IG Tales of 30th anniversary character illustration project is underway and will start with art based on Phantasia and Xillia
