The Tetris 99 3rd Maximus Cup is taking place May 17-19, 2019, and everyone is welcome as usual. However, this time everyone can earn a special reward for participating. This event is designed to celebrate the Tetris series’ 35th anniversary. As a result, a new Tetris 99 Game Boy theme has been added as a possible reward to earn.

Here’s how it works. If you play through this Tetris 99 Grand Prix, you will earn event points based on your rank each round. If you collect 100 points, you end up getting a Game Boy theme. (For example, getting 29th place out of the 99 total players gets you seven points.) This changes the look of the game, so it looks like the original Game Boy version, and also changes the background music to “Tetris Theme A.” People will be able to sample the theme all weekend, as it is in use during the event.

Tetris 99 is available on the Nintendo Switch for free to Nintendo Online subscribers. In case you missed it, the game’s developers recently talked about their inspirations for it.
