Unicorn Overlord is Atlus and Vanillaware’s 20th anniversary title. The duo previously brought us games like Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. The new game is a fantasy simulation RPG featuring a vast 2D world to explore and online battles. In the game, players can cultivate an army with over 60 unique playable characters.

The story of Unicorn Overlord centers takes place in the continent of Fevrith – an area which consists of five nations that are currently plagued by the plight of war. The chaos that erupted as a result of General Valmore’s revolt against his nation’s royal family sparked a seemingly endless battle covering the entire continent.

Alain is the protagonist of Unicorn Overlord. He’s a prince of the fallen kingdom of Cornia. After losing his mother in the war, he now uses the strength of his sword and the legendary Ring of the Unicorn to lead his people to freedom.

Here’s a list of some of the main characters players will meet during the game and the Japanese voice actors announced to be performing as them:

  • Alain (voiced by Kazuki Ura)
  • Galerius (voiced by Tesshô Genda)
  • Illenia (voiced by Yūko Kaida)
  • Josef (voiced by Kazuhiro Yamaji)
  • Lex (voiced by Miyu Irino)
  • Scarlett (voiced by Hina Suguta)

The order in which players meet the characters of Unicorn Overlord is not set in stone. It is up to the player to decide when and where to explore and who to recruit to their army.

It will also be their responsibility to choose the best tactics to lead their units on the battlefield to victory. There are three battle difficulties to choose from at the start of the game: casual, tactical, and expert mode. The online battles will have players competing against each other’s troops uploaded to the arena. There will also be a ranking system.

Unicorn Overlord will be released worldwide on March 8, 2023. It will be available to play on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
