In Velocity Stream, Being In First Place Changes The Game Completely

Gameplay 9 – Indie DB

Racing fans could be in for a treat with futuristic racer Velocity Stream, an indie title from Cavelight Entertainment that sorta looks like F-Zero. Where it differs is in its promise of “infinite” racetracks, which are generated by the player up in first position.

One player in the up-to-four competition plays as the Paver, who sets the tone for how crazy things are by driving their airplane/racer in front of everyone else and generating the racetrack according to their path. Corkscrew turns, sudden shifts in direction coming off the top of a hill and more are all driving tools at a Paver’s disposal depending on how they choose to move. The goal? To try and get every racer behind knocked off the crazy tracks they’re trying to follow.

Racers, meanwhile, try to stay on track and catch up to the Paver, eventually becoming the next Paver themselves. While the developers have promised a “activator” mode to get players back to racing their souped up vehicles with minimal downtime, we’re not sure how that will exactly affect the matches.

The game’s been in development for awhile, and is now overhauling its graphics to look more pleasing to our cyberpunk-fuelled eyes with higher-resolution height maps for terrain and an entire rebuild of the in-game city itself. The network component to let people hook up to each other is also being worked on, said the devs on their blog.

Velocity Stream is coming to the PC. A splitscreen demo is planned for release in the near future.
