Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper’s Duel Mode Adds Golden Axe Style Player Vs. Player

Recommended Videos

I think Dynasty Warriors games are at their best when you’re cutting down armies with a friend. The only downside is Cao Cao cuts the screen in half so both players can share it. Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper for Wii U tackles this problem by letting one player chop up armies on the TV and the other player uses the GamePad’s screen. Split screen mode is still in Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper for nostalgia. In single player mode, Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper streams to the TV and GamePad just like New Super Mario Bros. U.

Duel Mode is an interesting addition that reminded me of Golden Axe 3’s versus mode. You and a friend (or maybe enemy, if you’re playing online!) choose three characters and a stage to fight on. Chengdu, for example, has a long drawbridge that separates players when a match begins. Tall trees can occlude the battlefield on Wan Castle at certain angles.

Players also get to pick four strategy cards, which are assigned to the D-pad. Sun Wukong’s card gives you a "multi" status effect and Sima Zhao’s card is essentially his musou attack as a spell. Cards are interrupts and can be used even if your character is on the ground. Omega Force added strategic elements to Duel Mode, but I’ve enjoyed it more as a button mashing brawler.

When you unwrap Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper you only have one team for Duel Mode – Ma Chao, Sima Zhao, and Hanbei Takenaka – the three characters from the game’s prologue. You have to play through story mode to unlock additional warriors. And you probably want to get additional characters since fighting against Ryu Haybausa vs. Ryu Hayabusa fights are disorientating. Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper uses the same models for both players without color shading or even a 1P marker to distinguish the character you’re controlling. Well, it is kind of amusing when someone thinks they’re juggling you and then realize they’ve been caught in a combo.
