What Japanese Fans Think Of The Zero Escape: Volume 3 Announcement

image Both Virtue’s Last Reward and its predecessor, 999, rallied positive reviews from critics and fans alike. A third game in the series, Zero Escape: Volume 3, which is set to take place on Mars, was announced at Anime Expo earlier this month. The reaction in the west seems fairly positive, but what are Japanese players saying about the game?

Reading through the comments on GamesTalk, it seems that while people are happy to see the game return for a third installment, some are displeased with the fact that the game is coming to the 3DS and Vita instead of Vita and PS3/PS4. The common argument here seems to be that a PS3 or PS4 version would be more fitting so that the title could be a cross-buy, and that there’s no purpose to having two handheld versions of the title. 3DS supporters, however, are excited to see how puzzles work on Nintendo’s dual-screened handheld.

More supportive voices on the Japanese blog Hachima Kikou are hoping that the game will cross into another one of Spike Chunsoft’s Vita titles, Danganronpa, via the time travel mechanic. While most note that the series’ story is somewhat ludicrous, there’s also an air of delight around the fact that Zero Escape: Volume 3 takes place on mars. One of the commenter says, “I didn’t really understand the story, but I loved the characters and art work, and that’s enough for me to want to buy the game.” The comment is one of many that cite the series’ diverse cast of characters as being its most appealing elements.

While there are some squabbles over whether the Vita version or 3DS version will do better, the general consensus seems to be that people are happy that Zero Escape is getting a third installment. Danganronpa seemed to wet their appetite for Zero Escape: Volume 3, which is set to release late next year.
