WiiWare Crystal Defenders Sold In Shards

Square Enix is releasing Crystal Defenders in episodes. Crystal Defenders R2, a continuation of the Final Fantasy Tactics themed tower defense game comes out in Japan for WiiWare on February 24. New classes like the Hunter, Berserker, and Flintlock make an appearance here while other jobs like the White Monk are out of the picture. The system has also been revised with three colored crystals that players can set to boost their units’ stats.

Instead of selling Crystal Defenders R2 as expandable content for Crystal Defenders R1 it is a standalone game going for 1,000 Wii Points ($10) — the same price as Crystal Defenders R1. Before Crystal Defenders came out on the iPhone it was a series of three cell phone games. Interestingly, the WiiWare releases are not direct ports of the original cell phone games. The Fencer appears in Crystal Defenders R2, but she didn’t join the party until Crystal Guardians W3 (that’s the cell phone game).

Since there are three episodes of Crystal Guardians I wouldn’t be shocked to see Crystal Defenders R3 on WiiWare in Japan next month. You could get Crystal Defenders in possibly remixed pieces on the Wii or you can wait for the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 version which contains all three episodes in one package. Square Enix has not announced a price or date for the PS3/Xbox 360 version at this time.
