Wizardry VA Will Be Accessible to Newcomers But Still Retain Challenges

This article is over 3 years old and may contain outdated information

In a recent interview with Famitsu, the developers behind Wizardry VA shared their experiences developing the upcoming title. Additionally, this interview provided insight into some of the features and functions that will return and adjust for mobile devices. This included a brief discussion about the potential difficulty of the upcoming mobile game, gacha mechanics, and even the various kinds of dungeons players will explore. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

The developers also mentioned how “multiplayer” could potentially be implemented in the game. Instead of directly meeting up with a friend in a dungeon, you would instead meet up in a tavern. While multiplayer aspects are still being figured out and conceptualized, the developers want to ensure that players retain a sense of uniqueness in their own adventure. Specifically, they want to create an atmosphere of “playing a game and exchanging information with a classmate before there was internet.”

Regarding dungeons, the developers are trying to provide variety. The Wizardry series is often associated with dark, underground labyrinths. However, Wizardry VA will offer a plethora of new environments. This even includes open fields where players can encounter monsters, or snowy locales such as forests. These regions were shown very briefly in the latest Wizardry VA trailer.

Regarding gacha mechanics, the developer mentions that while they will be present they also want to reward players for using strategy to defeat stronger enemies and bosses. That being said, the developers are considering leaning into a gacha mechanic that aims to make the experience more enjoyable, or even easier, for players.

In the interview, the developers mentioned that Wizardry VA is currently 30% complete and is planned to be released in the second half of 2022. However, a lot of systems mentioned still need refining and tweaking. This includes the difficulty of the game. While the developers want to retain the “essence” of Wizardry, they also want to consider users who have never encountered previous entries in the series. That being said, the game will still be difficult and satisfying for older fans.

Wizardry VA is currently in development for Android and iOS devices and is scheduled to release in the second half of 2022.
