Taito has a killer line up next year with titles like Space Invaders Extreme and a touch screen revival of Exit. These core titles have diverged attention from Taito’s growing “girls” games like Pet Shop Monogatari DS. While it appears that Pet Shop Monogatari DS shares similarities with Nintendogs, the goals in the two games are remarkably different. In Nintendogs you care for your pet, a puppy that provides endless (virtual?) love. In Pet Shop Monogatari DS you groom pets for a commercial purpose, which means all the time you spent petting a dog with the stylus transforms into virtual currency. Even with the cute art style Taito’s game is notably darker with the undercurrent of trading love for money.
