Capcom “considering” a flock of Western IPs for the Wii

You’re not going to see Bionic Commando on the Virtual Console, but Capcom left some hopeful news on the Capcom forums. In response to the Bionic Commando on Virtual Console debacle a Capcom Community member posted the following grievance on the forums, “Capcom, I'm really pissed right now. I want to play these games, but you give us Wii owners the shaft. No RE5 Wii, possibly no Dead Rising 2, no Lost Planet, no Flock, no Age of Booty, No Street Fighter 4, no Devil May Cry, no Dark Void.”

Christian Svensson, VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development at Capcom, replied with, “We are contemplating versions of one or two of the CEI titles you've mentioned on the Wii (not saying which), but we'd like to see how they do on their initial target systems before doubling down on additional SKUs”

When Svensson says “CEI titles” he is referring to intellectual properties developed by Capcom USA. Out of the list Flock, Age of Booty, Dark Void, and Street Fighter IV are Capcom Entertainment Incorporated projects. Street Fighter IV is a possibility. Yoshinori Ono, the Producer of Street Fighter IV, told us if there were enough requests they would think about it. However, out of all the games on the list Flock seems like the most likely candidate. Flock has players move a UFO to scare sheep and other animals into a mothership. The game can be redesigned with pointing control, sold as a WiiWare title, and most importantly it won't need a huge budget to port over. Age of Booty seems like a possible candidate too if Capcom can get it to work over Nintendo Wi-Fi. Whatever games Capcom is considering won’t come out for some time though since Capcom plans on seeing how they perform on the Xbox 360/PS3 first.

    Bring them on. Getting them later and being in doubt if they’re even coming it’s getting the shaft already still.

    Even though I personally don´t care about Capcom western games, it would be nice that they released at least some of these on Wii for those who are interested.

    While I understand the reasons why Devil May Cry, Lost Planet, Dark Void, RE5 or even SFIV don´t have Wii ports, it doesn´t make much sense that Flock, 1942 JS, Bionic Commando Rearmed and Age of Booty don´t appear on Wii (and I´m probably forgetting others). Those games don´t have the high requirements that the rest have, and are not exclusive games to their platforms either.

    What really bothers me though, is how Mega Man 9 had to appear on Live/PSN, even though it was announced as WiiWare exclusive from the begining (and it still seems to be exclusive in Japan) but all these games don´t have to appear on the Wii, the best selling platform.

    Capcom USA has been completely partial towards the HD consoles so far, with only one game announced for Wii at the moment (Spyborgs), compared to all these games on 360/PS3. I wonder why…

    Aside all this, I´m still hoping that we get to see Bionic Commando on the VC eventually…whatever the problem is.

  • SomeDude

    seiya19: Whatever the problem?

    The problem’s Nintendo.

    The Bionic Commando producer in Japan said he wanted it on the VC. Capcom USA said they wanted it on the VC. The only other person involved then, who could have said, “No, it’s not going on the VC.” is Nintendo.

    So, if you want some more Capcom games on the VC…go see Nintendo.

  • Pedro Silva

    ^ Why do you think they did that? Should Nintendo let them release Bionic Commando on the Wii VC to hype the remake they won’t have (aka, Bionic Commando Rearmed?) Of course not, they’re not stupid.

    They did the right thing and we, Wii owners should be getting rearmed.

  • SomeDude

    Pedro: Riiiight. Like Nintendo so thoroughly blocked Street Fighter because that would only serve as advertising for every Street Fighter game on other platforms… Or Metal Gear Solid…

  • Noshino

    Pedro Silva,

    “1UP: What about the original Bionic Commando for Virtual Console?

    BJ: We couldn’t get it approved for the Virtual Console.

    1UP: Is that because of the whole Nazi thing?

    BJ: I can’t say why. I can just say that we tried to get it to work. We’re huge fans of the game. When you think about it, it totally makes sense as a strategy to have the original game out there in some format that people can play and see what was so great about it. But we were told no.”

    The NA version DID NOT have the Nazis on it, so the reason must be the one that you mentioned, but then again, that would be a dick move by Nintendo, hell, even Sony allowed Square Enix to adversite SO4 on SO1 for PSP

    They did the right thing? the right thing would have been for Nintendo to release a competent online store, you are blaming Capcom for Rearmed not being on the Wii, but what about Nintendo? Are there even games over 150MBs for WiiWare?

    Hell, at least you guys are getting enhanced ports, have you see what us PS3 owners have been getting? You have the weakest system, yet you guys have not only original games but even ports from the high end games, look at what the PS3 is getting, simply ports and multiplatform games that don’t even take advantage of the system.

    Quit being a baby and learn to appreciate what you have, which in comparison to the others, is INDEED a lot.

  • Pedro Silva

    ^and who spoke of nazis? the interviewer, that’s like… the less likely motive.

    There’s a much more logic stance going on, they’re making a remake we waint getting, it’s like if Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes was coming out today, 2 months prior, sony had upped Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PSN.

    Point in questions, Wii won’t get rearmed, the remake, so why would Nintendo let them re-release Bionic Comando, it would act as getting the shortest end of the stick, only so they can re-release it elsewhere and build up hype on our userbase? it’s logic.

    If Sony knew SO4 wasn’t for their platform they wouldn’t allow such publicity, that’s pretty obvious, it was a last minute decision with the help of big bucks from M$.

    If Capcom was releasing Megaman 9 in 3D elsewhere and asking Nintendo to publish 1 to 6, they’d say no aswell. And I’d agree, that’s market logic.

    I don’t understand though we’re getting enhanced ports? of What? lol, enhanced PS2 titles… enhanced with waggle? and why are you seemingly blowing up on me? more than that, if we go by sales alone, Wii should be getting more support than PS3 is, yet, Capcom has little titles that are unconfirmed for it, for the Wii though… So there’s a big differential just there.

    I don’t think it’s a lot.

  • JeremyR

    At least you’re getting games.

    Look at the PSP – it’s home to Capcom’s biggest success in the last couple years – Monster Hunter. But do they put out anything else but monster hunter? Nope. Admittedly, nothing else really sells, but most of it hasn’t been that good, either. Where’s a PSP Resident Evil or Devil May Cry?

  • seiya19

    @SomeDude

    Yes, I´m sure that Nintendo had something to do with it…the question is why though… If it´s like Pedro Silva said, then I understand why Nintendo did it, even though I don´t completely agree. The other alternative that comes to mind is if the game was rejected in Japan due to its content. Maybe a game with Nazis on it (unlike the US version) is not something appropiate for Nintendo Japan nowadays…and that could affect the US version as well. Whatever the case, I hope it´s not over yet.

    But I don´t see what this game has to do with other Capcom ones on VC…

  • seiya19

    @Noshino

    “even Sony allowed Square Enix to adversite SO4 on SO1 for PSP”

    Yes, but that was before Tri-Ace announced the platform for the game, when most people thought that the game was going to appear on PS3. I doubt that Sony advertised SO4 for 360 on purpose…

    “the right thing would have been for Nintendo to release a competent online store, you are blaming Capcom for Rearmed not being on the Wii, but what about Nintendo? Are there even games over 150MBs for WiiWare?”

    That doesn´t have anything to do with it… I seriously doubt that BC Rearmed needs 150mb on the Wii, specially when the game wouldn´t have HD graphics. If a game like FF CC My Life as a King can appear on WiiWare (including the extras), a 2.5D remake can appear as well.

    “Hell, at least you guys are getting enhanced ports, have you see what us PS3 owners have been getting?”

    RE5, Devil May Cry4, SFIV, Lost Planet (with extra content), Dark Void, Bionic Commando (3D one) and several downloadable games… That´s a lot for a console that sells as poorly as the PS3 does, with a complex development, much more expensive than the Wii. And don´t tell me that getting Zack and Wiki or RE UC is more important (in paper) that getting RE5, DMC4 or SFIV… The only one that could compare is MH3.

    For the sales that the Wii is getting, it deserves much more. And the GC had much less support than PS3 has now, with similar sales and being more easier and cheaper to develop for it at the time (not to mention that it was more capable than the PS2).

    It seems that you missed my point anyway…which was about the Wii not getting practically anything from Capcom USA, and Mega Man 9 having to appear on 360/PS3 but not the other downloadable games on Wii (which would be easy and cheap to port).

    @JeremyR

    PSP ? I think that Capcom has supported it more than it deserved… With the poor software sales that the console has (aside few exceptions, like Monster Hunter in Japan) and just decent hardware sales; the PS2 still selling and the DS excellent software and hardware sales (with lower development cost)…I don´t see why they should support it more. They have already released several worthy games for it which didn´t sell well (like the Mega Man remakes) and they have much better alternatives.

    I don´t think that is relevant to bring the PSP into this discussion though…

  • Shuyin

    @seiya19:
    “just decent hardware sales” – what? PSP is the best selling console this year in Japan. DS and Wii don’t hold a candle to it. PSP has been no1 best selling console in every month since january ’till now in Japan if i’m not mistaken. Don’t know who told you it only had decent sales but he lied. So let me help you: PSP had the best console hardware sales this year. ;)

  • http://meikiyou.deviantart.com meikiyou

    psone had n64 games…why wii can’t have ps360 ones? u just have to sweat and make a good game…lazyness kill wii gaming =.=

  • jarrod

    PSP has had great hardware sales, great Monster Hunter sales, and generally terrible software sales for everything else. That’s why developers have been progressively scaling back and largely ignoring it. Bionic Commando Rearmed actually started out as a PSP project btw.

    Not getting Bionic Commando on VC sucks, but there’s little rhyme or reason as to how VC games get selected imo. BC wasn’t “rejected” though, it was licensed along with the rest of Capcom’s NES/SNES/N64 library… but no telling if we’ll ever see it.

  • seiya19

    @Shuyin

    “PSP is the best selling console this year in Japan. DS and Wii don’t hold a candle to it.”

    You´re kidding, right ? If you´re aware of how sales are going in Japan, you´re probably aware as well about its life to date sales… The DS has sold over 23 million in Japan alone and it´s the best selling console ever in there, even outselling PS2. It´s ridiculous to expect the DS to sell as much as the PSP now in Japan (even though is really close lately), when the PSP has only sold over 10 million in Japan. Japan is saturated with DSs…

    As for the Wii… Everyone that has been paying attention to Japanese gaming lately knows that portable gaming is more popular than home consoles nowadays. Still, the Wii is not too far from the PSP, and it´s outselling 360 and PS3 by far, even combined.

    By the way, Japan is only one market… Both Wii and DS sell better in America and Europe than PSP, outselling it worldwide every week by more than what PSP sells in Japan…

    @jarrod

    “Bionic Commando Rearmed actually started out as a PSP project btw”

    Really ? I didn´t know that. I´ll have to check that out. And I hope you´re right about BC being licensed along with Capcom´s library…better late than ever.

  • Elorian

    Why even test them on 360 and PS3 first? The Wii is where it’s at. Everybody knows the other console owners only buy megahype titles like Call of Duty and Gears of War.
