Japanese Gamers On The Most Interesting Games Of 2010 So Far

Dengeki recently conducted a survey of the most interesting games released during the first half of 2010 in Japan. While a lot of the usual candidates popped up, it was interesting to see titles like God of War III and Heavy Rain mentioned, even if they were lower on the chart.

The survey was conducted from June 25th – July 7th. Here are the results:

NieR Gestalt definitely deserved its mention. What a wonderfully odd game, probably my game of the year.

  • Joanna

Glad to see XenoBlade and Nier mentioned. :)

Sad to see Ghost Trick so low on the list. I can't wait to see what the creator of Phoenix Wright has come up with. :D

  • Aoshi00

Same here, I don't remember the last time I was so sucked in by a game.. sigh, I need to get to the other games on this list (like GoW3, Xenoblade, Resonance of Fate, and Peace Walker).. Glad that Heavy Rain is up there, from Amazon Jpn's user reviews, it sounded like the Jpn gamers really appreciate it (I also got the Jpn ver. for dual track :)

  • RAVENKam

Yeah, I'm psyched for Xenoblade too. Meanwhile, Resonance of Fate (PS3) is still sealed, one of many on my 'bought but physically have no time to play' titles. I really have to get around to it at some point, especially after hearing so much positive feedback.

  • Simon

Do you mean Yakuza 4 at 11?

  • http://twitter.com/fourtwenny Milton R

There's only one 360 game on the list. Bill Gates must be crying a lot :(

  • http://www.playstationuniversity.com Sieghardt

2 Gust games! way to go guys, well deserved ^^

  • Aoshi00

I have Nier, Super Street Fighter IV, and Resonance of Fate on 360. Don't have Lost Planet 2 though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/strawberry.kurosaki William Hsia

but we're talking about japan here where the 360 support is so low it hurts.

  • Aoshi00

I know that's not news, the majority of Jpn gamers continue to stick w/ Sony/Nintendo and their portables no doubt. I still like all the Jpn exclusive 360 games and US 360 games, and usually lean 360 for multiplatform. At least they're still putting out great Jpn and US games on the system. As a gamer I appreciate that.

  • doubletaco

Etrian Odyssey III at #2 makes me very happy.

  • Ereek

Yeah, I'm surprised Gust did so well, too!Definitely a good thing.

cool ghost trick!! I WANNA TRY THIS, and i want a new ace attorney game soon!! Aghh those games are addictive

i love Resonance of Fate.. im glad its on the list

  • kylehyde

    Same here in everything

  • holyPaladin

    Want to play Xenoblade ^^

KH BBS is awesome although it's short compared to KH in PS2

  • http://www.facebook.com/henson88 Hendra Susanto

    wow, no dragon quest ix…

  • Feynman

Totally. Gust makes some of my favorite jRPGs, it's nice to see them getting some love!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

that's classified in 2009 and it was #1 for that year

  • Ashgail

Yeah, definitely get RoF and MGS:PW. Peace Walker's really addictive to me, I don't know why, even though I'm not quite fond of MGS's on the PS2. >_<

  • landlock

    I count 4.

Why would anyone get a fighting game on the 360 with that d-pad? I hope you have a fighting stick.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Well, technically, there's only one, as Nier Gestalt is 360-only in Japan. Multiplatform games are just that, multiplatform.

  • JustThisOne

Heavy Rain~ Awesome, I think it definitely deserves to be there.

  • TheCleaningGuy

Can't say I disagree! I guess I really need to get that Resonance of Fate.

  • animaster

Quite surprised to see Ar Tonelico 3 beats KH:BBS although it's supposed to be one of the most anticipated Square Enix' titles this year. Atelier Totori's doing good as well. Keep up the good work, Gust!

  • Aoshi00

I do. I have the HRAP for both PS3 (Sanwa) and 360 (Seimitsu). I got SFIV on PS3, and use the 360 stick for shmups, but it turns out that I play fighters better w/ the seimitsu stick too, so I got Super SFIV on 360. Also I used the analog stick when I use the controller to play Street Fight IV or HD Remix, so I actually like the 360 controller better than Dual shock 3, even for shmups when I played Shikigami no Shiro 3, that was before I got the arcade stick.

  • Aoshi00

I have all those games alrdy, just haven't time to play them :(.. I actually imported Peace Walker and ended up hating it (the lack of 2nd analog stick mainly), even though I loved MGS 1-4. I need to get over the hurdle and give PW another try, I want to see the story. I bought it from Amazon w/ the $10 credit before, I should've gotten it from Kmart, it was only $20 this past week..

  • zangetsukakashi

i'd say nier deserves first, it is the best this year

  • Ashgail

Yeah, I think I remember your comment about the controls.. Give shooter controls a try.. If you still don't like it, just go along with RoF. Top quality material. Just don't pull your hair too much during the earlier parts of the game. It gets better. Ganbate ne!

  • cowcow

also Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory came out to recently. I played some JPN people online already that had over 60,000 BP (My BP is 850 for comparisons and I've played online a dozen times)

  • Joanna

I'm actually surprised to see Joker2 in the list. Lots of people (at least in English speaking countries) were complaining about Joker. So I thought the franchise wasn't that popular. I liked Joker though. I hope we see the sequel over seas as well. :3

  • Aoshi00

Thanks. I only saw the intro and walked around town in RoF so far, beautiful game. I need to read all the instruction first before doing battles. How was the story, was it very good? I think I tried both action and shooter control scheme for PW, neither feels perfect, each has its pros and cons.. everyone seems to have no trouble w/ this being on the PSP, I just wish this were PS3 or at least on PS2.. I don't feel like playing an action intensive game on a portable hampered by the control..

  • thebanditking

Which reminds me, thanks for recommending NieR to me a while back. I gave it a shot (despite my reservations about it) and I think its a fantastic game, now if only I could actually get to my back log of titles. My PSP is the worst offender, after that my DS.

  • Ashgail

Sorry, can't reply to your message down there.. But anyways, Resonance Of Fate doesn't really have a major story going on until the later chapters… I'm on chapter 9 and the story's kicked off a bit, but still not proper.
The earlier chapters tells the story of the heroes doing jobs for the cardinals and some snippets of main story, which won't make much sense since you get only a couple of those.
However, their misadventures and the characters are really interesting. Not those “I need to save the world so I gotta become emo” crap publishers are pushing nowadays.
I'm sorry if you're expecting Nier quality story, but I don't think Resonance Of Fate lives up to that. On the bright side, it makes up with a complex and rewarding gameplay and there's a lot of humor to be enjoyed.

  • Aoshi00

I see, somehow I wasn't expecting RoF to have an epic story, w/ 3 main chars in a tower.. It's nice to hear their misadventures though, it's the little things that make the characters interesting and likable, wonder if Vashyron would turn out betraying them at the end or something, he has the shifty eyes :).. appreciate the description, sounds like a good game. Nier's story was really good indeed.

  • Aoshi00

No prob, certainly one of the best games I've played in a long time, underrated because some complained about the graphics or how the old man looks.. there were all fine once you play the game. Technically I still haven't finished Nier yet because there's still endings C & D, did you get B yet? B expanded upon A, it's very touching. I don't even think about backlog anymore, I got a backlog last gen and a backlog this gen.. I'll get to them when I'm lucky.. too many games for me these days I think. I'm starting to play my DS again on the bus though, instead of napping :)
