This Week In Sales: Red Dead Redemption Beats A Whole Lot Of Local Games

The week of October 4th – 10th. Pokémon Black/White maintain their clear lead over every other game in the race. But wait! What’s this? An impressive performance by Red Dead Redemption on PS3 at #4, coming in at 70,599 units?! That isn’t too far from Dead Rising 2′s debut on PS3 last week.

Combined with sales of the Xbox 360 version, that brings Red Dead’s total up to over 96,000 units.

That’s the big sales story of the day, aside from Kingdom Hearts re:Coded, which moved 95,505 units in its first week. That’s a fairly low figure compared to opening sales of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, which debuted at nearly 300,000 units. Unlike 358/2, however, re:Coded isn’t an original title — it’s a remake of a mobile phone game, which Japanese Kingdom Hearts fans have likely already played.

Meanwhile, Class of Heroes 3 moved 30,000 units on PSP and about half that on PS3. The other interesting release was by Rocket Company, who publish the Medabots games in Japan. This week, they released Tenkaichi Sengoku Lovers, an otome game for DS, which charted at #15 with 9.5k units.

I am somewhat surprised that Red Dead Redemption is doing well in Japan.

GTA actually does reasonably well, too.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Huh. Somehow I got the impression Japan didn’t really like sandbox games… But then stuff like Harvest Moon and Yakuza does really well, so it makes a bit more sense I guess.

I think Jpn gamers are more open to western games in recent years, like all the FPSs, Heavy Rain, or Enslaved, even though they don’t sell like Pokemon. Well, good western is good western, and Jpn gamers seem to recognize and appreciate the high production value of these titles too, instead of just dismissing them as western games like before.

How well did re:Chain of Memories sell compared to the original? I imagine it sold better compared to its original than re:coded to its original, mainly because r:CoM was on the PS2, which made it feel like turning a side-game into a full game, instead of a side-game into a slightly more advanced side-game.

re:CoM was a huge, huge upgrade. GBA to PS2 is massive compared to mobile phone to DS, even if they did add a lot under the surface.

I think it comes down to advertising, too. If I recall correctly, I remember seeing re:CoM advertised alongside Final Mix 2 a lot (or was that in the U.S?). Plus, after all the hype they built up for Birth by Sleep, re:Coded kind of pales in comparison in terms of the marketing message…

        re:CoM was packed into KH2:Final Mix+… -_- it made me sad…

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Well, that explains it. Yea, re:Coded isn’t nearly on the same scale. That secret movie they talked about landed up on the net the same day the game was released, too. But then, I don’t know if Square really expected re:Coded to move too many units in the first place.

    Oh Christ, Pokemon.

Well, that’s great for RDR. Definitely deserves the sales, as I’d say it’s definitely a contender for best game of 2010. Definitely.

Wow Class of Heroes 3 on PS3! Er Galaxy 2 still hasnt hit 1 mllion? Its that bad?

  • Instant Karma

I’m glad RDR is doing so well. I wonder what the promos were like in Japan.

Localizing Class of Heroes 2 and 3 might be out of ATLUS’ priority now.

  • cmurph666

Oh man~! Pokémon Black / White at 3,992,855. It hasn’t even hit NA yet.

I wonder if Zero no Kiseki sold “enough” I really want Falcom to do well.
