This Week In Sales: Vanquish, No More Heroes 2, And Super Mario Collection

By Ishaan . October 27, 2010 . 4:29pm

SEGA can’t be very pleased given that Vanquish got off to a rather miserable start in Japan. How miserable? Well, let’s compare sales to PlatinumGames’s previous multiplatform title, Bayonetta and see how it holds up:

System Bayonetta debut Vanquish debut
PS3 93,000 (approx.) 48,318
360 45,000 (approx.) 11,204

Ouch. This shouldn’t really come as a surprise at this point, given the kind of game Vanquish is. One could point to several reasons for its slow debut, not the least of which are its extremely fast pace and animated camera.

Another non-surprise was No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, which opened at a low 11,373, including the impressive “Hopper’s Edition,” which comes packed with an impressive list of bonuses, including an animated movie.

Meanwhile, PlayStation Move software got off to a slow debut in Japan as well, with Beat Sketcher being the highest-selling Move game at 22,165 units. Resident Evil 5: Alternate Edition fizzled out with a mere 9,399 units.

The big story of the week, of course, is that Pokémon Black/White have finally been removed from the #1 spot by the release of the Super Mario Collection Special Pack. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them crawl their way back up eventually.

The logic is probably more like “No librarian glasses hot chick no buy”…

    • thaKingRocka

      Pretty much.

      • Aoshi00

The suggestively low camera for Elena just doesn’t do it for them I guess :(…

        • Code

Suggestively low camera for Elena should have did it for everybody T_T’ Seriously though I imagine Vanquish is going to be kind of a slow burn title.

      • Aoshi00

Sad thing is Platinum even dubbed Vanquish in Jpn which they didn’t even do for Bayonetta.. Fanservice is still the best bait, remember the very first trailer showing her crotch in close up in the middle of all the crazy acrobatics :). And w/ Sega’s “advertising”, word of mouth could only do so much..

    • Code

If only Vanqish had a chick in a robotic suit instead, it’d have been a smashing success, perhaps instead of dodging you could roll into a ball, and you could collect a series to upgrades to progress the story, ohhh waitt…

      • Aoshi00

Even that didn’t convince Jpn though, like a chick after a bad break-up :(… Speaking of robotic chicks, I’m curious about the robot DLC skin for Trip in Enslaved, forgot if it was best buy or GS, a little creepy though makes her look like a cyborg. Elena’s Jpn seiyuu sounds pretty cute too, I have a hard time digging the info on the Jpn VAs for Vanquish.. I’ll listen to that on my 2nd playthru.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

        Mikami did make P.N.03…

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It the worst when Japanese gamers reinforce western stereotypes about them… yet I’m sure we’re hardly better in their eyes.

EDIT: But then again, No More Heroes 2 is jam packed full of that stuff and it sold even worse…

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

What’s the movie packed in with No More Heroes 2?

Also, hope Vanquish does better or else Platinum is never making anything like it again. Unless western sales alone are insanely high (unlikely).

    • There’s a short movie that sort of explains what happens between NHM1 and 2 (I think anyway… I need to find good subs, my Japanese sucks). There’s also a kind of fast-forward of NMH1’s storyline showing Travis defeating each boss. There’s 1 more thing but I forgot. If you’re a fan of the No More Heores franchise it’s well worth it in my opinion. I don’t regret my purchase at all. Should be receiving Super Mario Collection Special Pack pretty soon now. :)

EDIT: Oh also, forgot to add. There’s a small artbook included in the NMH2 Hopper’s Edition package with a photo of Suda51 which says “NO MORE HEROES NOT DEAD”. Oh yeah!

    • Vanquish will sell way better in America and Europe you can pretty much bank on that seeing as again Japan doesn’t really like shooters at all…

  • Alright, alright. I’m going to buy 2 more copies of Vanquish. I already have two copies of Vanquish as it is.

    • Testsubject909

Why don’t you just send them the money directly as a donation, give them 100% of your support as opposed to a small percentage which will also be funding a company that’s attempting to screw them up the ass from gaining any sort of profit from used games sales?

      • Not buying from GAMESTOP. Buying from Amazon.

And if there’s a place where I can leave a donation, I’d like to pay the site a visit.

      • bugmeknot

At my rage of all the local shops here plastered with Vanquish and no sign of Atelier Rorona I went online and bought a few copies to make up for it.

You have to remember managers make decisions, not developers and managers look at sales figures.

    • Perhaps I should have bought Vanquish instead of Star Wars Force Unleashed II…I need to stop buying games based on hype.

      • You bought the Force Unleashed II?!? Why didn’t you just set your money on fire, instead?

      • : |

Star Wars Force Unleashed 2? >:|

        • People didnt hype Vanquish up and plus it seemed too hardcore for me, at the rate Im going now, Ill have Force Unleased II finished in just one evening, lol.

          • shion16

            and well
is it worth to buy it?

          • kupomogli

            Have you played the original?

While I’ve only played the demo of The Force Unleashed 2, I can safely say that the game is complete garbage, just like the original, but in a prettier packaging.

You “technically” play as the exact same character. The only difference is that he has two swords instead of one. The attacks look better graphically but it really doesn’t change that they’re the same attacks. The main problem with the gameplay is that it’s bland and monotonous. The combo system doesn’t have the same feeling as you’d get by playing Devil May Cry and such, it just feels like you’re going through corridor after corridor killing all enemies there and then proceeding.

Another thing is how the attacks don’t link together. You use a ground finisher that the enemy is suspended in air and, just like on the first, your characters response time is so slow that they’re mid air a good 3-4 seconds and you don’t regain control until they’re falling so what can you do? Just a ground attack or that one force attack that hits everyone around you. Or how useless most attacks are damage wise. Also the force is once again the dominant “force?” It’s sad when the force push causes much more damage than a lightsaber(or in the second games case, twin lightsabers.)

          • It isnt as bland as Kupmogli says…

My main issue with the game is that, I can easily see how people can truly finish the game in relatively less than six hours time. It actually will take me an hour to get through each level. The gameplay is literally what one will make it. It is true that one could monotonously play the game by using essentially the same attack, or one could actually utilized all the combos (I think there are over 20 or so). Ive been following a strategy guide so altering my attacks to get trophies.

I think its a solid game, just potentially not worth day 1 price unless one is into collectors editions. Twin sabers is a cool idea though.

    • Won’t help, Mikami is with ZeniMax now :/ (of couse you couldn’t know that by the time you typed this)

  • Bayonetta seems more like a “Japanese game,” if you will, while Vanquish seems more for a Western audience. Then again, I’m no anthropologist so what do I know?

    • Code

You know that would have been my initial guess but Vanquish at least to me still has a lot of heavy Japanese traits, to me it reminded me more of Gunstar Heroes then any western game I could think of.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Funny you say that, I was under the impression that Vanquish, with its emphasis on weapon upgrades, tons of bullets on screen, high scores and impossibly large mechanical bosses, was a modern “reboot” of Contra/ Metal Slug style arcade games in the same way Lords of Shadow is a “reboot” of Castlevania.

        • Code

See that’s exactly what it looks and felt like to me — sure it’s not about dodging marble sized bullets, but I still can’t help but feel like it’s values are more in common with Contra/Metal Slug/Gunstar, then necessarily any western FPS.

  • falcomgamefan

I think the poor sales of Vanquish have to do with the Mature rating and the fact that the game drops the F-bomb and any other number of swear words for no real reason. The gameplay is ultra-solid, but the story is not so good, no thanks to JP Kellams. Where do they get these scenario writers, anyway? The whole “Russia is the enemy” thing is just retarded. Just as a reminder, the cold war has been over for a long time.

    • Hraesvelgr

Cold War might be over, but Russia (or China) as America’s enemy in fiction is incredibly common.

      • Aoshi00

The Sino-US relationship is pretty volatile in real life too, what w/ the US keep borrowing money from China at low interest rate and depreciating the dollar (it’s like China is losing money for lending), and we are accusing of others manipulating currency, it’s like 1985 w/ Jpn all over again.. Well, let’s see what comes out of G20, at least China doesn’t have to bend over backwards like Jpn did. I know we’ve been saying WWIII, it might not be that farfetched considering the political and economical climate now.. all it takes is just some stunt like the sinking of a S. Korean sub (which happened at just the right time when ex-prime minister Hatoyama was going to expel the US military)

    • thaKingRocka

      These are Japanese sales figures.

    • Do you really think that cursing is what is responsible for the sales and not, oh, I don’t know…Sega’s complete lack of advertising if they do things in Japan anything like they do them here?!?

If using the “f word” made a game sell poorly, none of the Grand Theft Auto games would’ve sold.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I dunno. Mikami’s games have never had good stories… heck, they’ve never even had decent stories. His games all have terrible stories full of plot holes and B-movie dialogue. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Mikami does for games what John Woo did for movies.

  • What can I say, Bayonetta features a FEMALE lead and Vanquish a MALE lead! Zing, zing!

  • Guest

Surprise! The console market is still a mess in Japan! I prefer handhelds anyways so Im very much looking forward to 3DS support and PSP2 assuming Sony has learned ANYTHING from the PSP. (The surface of the PSPhone isn’t convincing me they have)

  • Here’s hoping that the PS3 version of No More Heroes will sell well enough to prompt them to bring the equal to a better home too.

    • Either way it wouldn’t be ported by Grasshopper who made the actual games so honestly I don’t see what the point would be in bringing any of the No More Heroes games to the 360 or PS3 seeing as Suda 51 wouldn’t be involved in any of the porting to those systems…

Not only that he’s already said he plans to make the 3rd No More Heroes for Nintendo’s next home console.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

A Third-Person Shooter NOT selling in Japan. SHOCKING.

    Not really.

  • shion16

Im getting Ninja Storm 2 and Vanquish Tomorrow ^^PS: Im SilverShion and Killzone 3 beta code made me so happy =Di love you siliconera!

    • Oho! I wouldn’t have guessed it. Congratulations again! :)

  • Tom_Phoenix

Move software not selling well? What a shocking and unexpected turn of events!…..If you haven’t guessed it, that sentence is oozing with sarcasm.

Really, the only major suprise is how well Medal of Honor has sold (well…..well for FPS games in Japan, anyway). Everything else seems to be going preety much as expected.

I wonder if Kirby’s Epic Yarn will retain a long-term spot on the list or if it will drop off relatively quickly.

  • Here’s another reminder that Japan’s “hardcore fans” (placeholder word for: the people that buy good games regardless of console, advertising and similar factors) are a very small group :/

  • malek86

Wow, japanese sure love their overpriced SNES ports.

I wish Vanquish would have sold more, but it looks like something that appeals more to western audiences. We’ll see the numbers for Europe and USA, then.

    • Aoshi00

And most of them say it isn’t worth it either, the CD was rather short, only had 10 music tracks and sound effects. Good thing I decided not to get it.. Vanquish being a new IP didn’t help either, just like Nier.. they’re easily GotY that deserve to sell more, not sure how Vanquish would do over here, probably not so high.. again not much advertising, word of mouth could only do so much.. it’s like like Pokemon or FF which sell themselves…

  • karasuKumo

I can’t afford stuff at the moment I and REALLY want Vanquish, so much it’s unbearable. I need to get all the Disgaeas, Sengoku Basara 3 PS3 and Vanquish. I’m going to be broke .__.

I can’t see why it isn’t selling, probably because the main character is actually manly.
