Pokémon, Mario And Final Fantasy XIII Were Japan’s Top-Selling Games Of 2010

By Ishaan . December 28, 2010 . 1:23pm

Japanese sales tracker Media-Create have published a list of the top-selling games from November 30th, 2009 – November 28th, 2010 in Japan (narrowly missing the release of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, which released three days later).

Unsurprisingly, Pokémon Black / White took the #1 spot on the chart, followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Total sales take a dive from #3 onward, with Final Fantasy XIII selling close to 2 million copies.

Nothing on the list is particularly surprising, but it is interesting how Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage and Yakuza 4 weren’t all that far apart from each other. With Yakuza: Of the End slated for a March release, we’re curious to see how that game does.

The original God Eater appears to have done well for itself, too, and was the second best-selling new franchise for the period. Tomodachi Collection, also new, released in Japan in mid-2009, and consistent sales drove it to be the top-selling new franchise overall if you ignore the fact that it released months prior to the tracking period.

Sales data acquired from 4Gamer and Media-Create.

  • Nice list… but so many “not new” games, i feel like all the industry is doing now is recycling a game’s franchise popularity… reminds me to what is kind of happening in the world of movies…

    • Indeed, and it also doesn’t help much that the new games and relatively new games on the list are based on existng ideas and/or designed to get the living hell milked out of them.

      • Yeah, i know is “hard” (In a economic way) to try to do something new, but seriously, this will collapse one day if it keeps on going

  • Wow that is shocking that Final Fantasy XIII sold way more than Super Mario Galaxy 2. Though not really, people must not have wanted to buy a glorified expansion pack when a new fast paced joyride in storytelling RPG was brought out!

But Gran Turismo and Sengoku Basara 3, wow!

    • Both Mario Galaxy games actually have a lot more going against them in Japan. You can read more about this here:

But Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better product.

    • ECM

Glorified expansion pack?? How is it anymore of an “expansion pack” than a million other sequels??

    • BadenBadenPrinny

Then I lol’d when FFXIII was being sold for the Japanese equivalent of five bucks and I still wouldn’t pay that…

      • mach

You mean it got sold at the same discount price as EVERY popular game? Fire-sale prices like that are a classic strategy for bringing people into a store. Seriously people, if you’re going to make fun of FFXIII, at least get some new material.

You could use the same logic to argue that Mass Effect 2 is a horrible game, seeing as it hasn’t even been out a year and already went on sale for about $10 in certain places.

        • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

I dont see why so many people complain about FFXIII. It was fun told a a great story imo, and the combat system was new take on the turn based system. Isn’t that what it’s supposed to do?

        • BadenBadenPrinny

I meant how fast it went down to that price….

          • mach

It went down at the same rate every game does. The $5 price drop early on was just a stunt some convenience store pulled to lure in customers. It was limited to some ridiculously small number of sales (i.e., somewhere in the double digits).

The only reason people in the West even know about that stunt is because Kotaku reported on it. And the only reason Kotaku reported on it is because Brian Ashcraft has a stick up his butt and likes to rag on every JRPG that comes out.

          • BadenBadenPrinny

I have to admit, this is true

    • Japan has never really every been a fan of 3d Mario game. The first Galaxy just sold almost or a million.

  • Yesshua

Wow. Nine of the top ten games are for Nintendo hardware, and six of them are made by Nintendo.

That’s truly surreal, that one company can be so dominant in an entertainment industry.

    • shion16

      only in japan

      • Didnt nintendo was first in the world economic ranking at some point (beating even apple)

        • malek86

What? That’s impossible. Check out the market capitalization for Apple. Nintendo can’t even see them from afar, not even when the Wii and DS were at their peak. Maybe in the past, but I don’t know about that.

Still, nowadays, Nintendo is not nearly as big as Apple. Although they are bigger than Sony, yes.

I think i heard it or read it somewhere, but i quick googeled and i think this is what i heard/read about

Yeah it seems it was 2 years ago i think i just changed the words in my mind, it seems it was just conisdered a better company than apple (and etc)

          • malek86

            Oh, that makes better sense.

Still, that article is a bit funny in retrospect. It says that they ranked the companies also depending on future growth, but Nintendo’s market cap in 2010 actually shrinked, as did their performance. Guess they didn’t expect the Wii to have a sales slump during the first nine months of this year.

  • shion16

i though inazuma eleven was gonna be in a higher position

  • Really hope FF XIII versus can do way better than this..

  • PrinceHeir

what happened to Lord of Aracana and No More Heroes 2?(even though they were released mid way Q4)

  • I didn’t know FF sold that much in Japan. I believe most of it was sold in the first week. Either way by far it’s the best selling PS3 game. Now once Nintendo finds away to sale 3D Mario, and Zelda in Japan. Their complete control of the world will be complete!!!! LOL

  • holyPaladin

MHP3rd gonna be no.1 next year

  • HarryHodd

PS3 and PSP rule third party sales on this list.

  • d19xx

Shooter Gear unsurprisingly didn’t do too well.

Kojima, try making a new mgs game with the classic control and camera. You know like the old good ones that sold millions…

    • RupanIII

  • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

Hopefully Bamco’s not looking at this list when considering Tales localization lmfao. I’m actually surprised Sengoku Basara made the list and not Persona 3 Portable

  • maxchain

Hang on, let me get my Surprised Face. I think I put on my “Yes, Pokemon Is Essentially The Same Game It Was In 1996, Get Over It” Face by accident.

    • SolidusSnake

They should have a narrator at the beginning of each game say “Cock fighting… cock fighting never changes…”

  • kashiwaba

The list is not up to date GT5 is at 530k right now and its missing MHP3 which sold 3 mils so far 2010 is still not over.

    • These are numbers from November 30th 2009 till November 28th 2010.
