This Week In Sales: Pokémon And Monster Hunter Rule Space And Time

By Ishaan . January 12, 2011 . 4:28pm

The week of January 3rd – 9th saw individual sales numbers on the top-20 chart drop even further than last week, as the holiday spirit cooled off and the market settled back into its familiar trend.

Pokémon Black/White are now past 5 million units sold as expected, and show no signs of coming to a standstill any time soon. We remain curious to see if the release of the Nintendo 3DS in February has any impact at all on the two games.

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, still at the top spot, and almost at 4 million units, is now very much in Pokémon territory. The question of how the mainline Monster Hunter and Pokémon games will look in comparison to each other a year or so from now is suddenly very valid.

The only new release in the top-twenty for the week was SaGa 3: Ruler of Space-Time – Shadow or Light, debuting modestly at #8, with 27,000 units sold. The top-twenty chart in its entirety is as follows:

  • (no attacking the other commenters — mod)

    • Did you change your name again, Tsuna?

      • He’s trying to bait TS.

        Remember: TS likes Gran Turismo.

TS also made a statement about 2 weeks ago how he wanted Kirby to do well because “it’s one of Nintendo’s flagship characters” or something along those lines. Firo probably missed last week’s This Week in Sales where TS proved himself to be lying about that when he was gloating about the fact that Kirby was off the charts.
… Don’t ask how I remember that… Sometimes I even scare myself about how much stuff I remember.

        • Lol you got his comment deleted :D

          • I didn’t really have the intention to have that happen. =x

I know mon hun is great, but these sales are insane xDDDD

Now the real battle begins, who is going to keep with the mon hun games??
    PSP2 or 3DS???

    • Both! There’s no reason for Capcom to not put Monster Hunter on as many systems as they possibly can. Previously, it was only exclusive to the PSP on the grounds of hardware, but that isn’t going to be a problem any more. More exposure for the series. :)

  • Monhun is going strong.

  • So how is Super Mario All Stars a Collectors Edition with 820K sales and its still being sold…

Mr.Ishaan didnt offer commentary about Ni no Kuni, as has been usual for the past few weeks :(

    • Haha, we can’t predict the future or anything; all we can do is make educated guesses. I didn’t want to make any unfounded predictions. I think Ni no Kuni is just one of those things that we’ll have to watch and see to understand how it does over time.

Media-Create themselves believe that word of mouth should be able to carry it. Now that the holidays are over, we should start to get a good idea in a couple weeks about what weekly numbers Ni no Kuni will “settle” at for the foreseeable future.

I’m sure Square was more-or-less expecting such sales from Saga 3 given how the previous remake fared.

  • PrinceHeir

Monster Hunter is still selling as ever :D

please a Monster Hunter PS3 would be nice ^^

  • I wonder how much a Pokemon X Monster Hunter would sell like.. Mmm Pokemon + Monsta Hunta = Pokahuntas?

    • I think that could only be done on consoles, too much monster data. Then again, has Nintendo ever done any major crossovers?

      • That’s nonsense. It could easily be done on a portable.

    • Zero_Destiny

That would be epic!!! But what kind of game would it be RPG or Action? lol While whatever genere it’ll still make more money than probably anything else.

    • joesz

      That sounded so absurd.O_O
Seriously I can’t even begin to mind just can’t

  • joesz

14-AKB 1/48 Fall In Love With An Idol
yay~ can’t wait for it to leave the list:)

  • I hope Ni no Kuni gets some better days.

    • It could have been much worse. As it is, Ni no Kuni could become a cult hit. Yeah Level-5 were aiming for higher but again it could have been worse.

  • Tom_Phoenix

You know, for a title that is considered a flop, the 3rd Birthday is hanging in there suprisingly well.
