This Week In Sales: Another Century’s Episode Portable Takes Point

By Ishaan . January 19, 2011 . 4:37pm

The week of January 10th – January 16th saw Monster Hunter Portable 3rd removed from its #1 spot on the charts after more than a month…by Another Century’s Episode Portable. Namco’s mech game moved 70,000 units, narrowly beating out Portable 3rd’s sales for the week.

For those watching the Pokémon vs. Monster Hunter duel, an interesting point to note is that Portable 3rd’s 7th week sales are nearly identical to Pokémon Black/White’s. However, Black/White debuted at much higher numbers in their first week, so they’re still ahead by a million units.

Arcana Heart 3 (PS3) released the same week as well, and managed to move 17,000 units, debuting at #6 on the chart. The only other new release that made it into the top-20 was Mass Effect 2, published by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 at #15.

The rest of the chart shows long-tailed sellers like Nintendo’s line of older games tapering off gradually as the holiday effect continues to wear off. New releases such as Donkey Kong Country Returns, however, are still going relatively strong in comparison.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Thats funny I just ordered that A.C.E :P game that week too

  • Another Century’s Episode Portable must be some pretty amazing game to out do the tottering Donkey Kong Country Returns, which may end up ceasing to chart like Kirby’s Epic Yarn.

    • Yeah… beating a game that have more than a month of being released…. (sarcasm) :P

It selling that much doesn’t necesary means is an amazing game though, but japanese do like their robotz xD

    • Please learn to read dude; you make my eyes bleed every time I read one of your comments lately…

      • Mr. Ishaan, whatever do you mean? It makes perfect sense to me.

        • People have explained it to you enough times already, but I’ll do it once more. Read articles before you make statements that make you look ignorant. -_-

In this case: yes, ACE:P certainly deserves some credit, but not for the reasons you pointed out. DKCR has been on the charts for weeks now; of course its sales are starting to drop off (like most games would). It’s doing very well. Look at the total sales of DKCR. ACE:P will never in a million years reach anywhere near that number.

          • Ishaan, he’ll never learn his lesson… We tried to do the same thing ever since he joined here. Every week, and everytime, the same thing happens.

Even if he says “I learned my lesson” and says he won’t do it again, we’ll see him just repeat the cycle a few days later.

EDIT: And well, in my case, I just stopped replying to his posts, and just read what the others have to say.

      • You know, I almost choked on my tea, imaging that literally happening when someone would read his comments.

  • shion16

i wonder how is a call of duty game with jap voices

    • OMG please tell me they did not dub it. It is so unreal if it uses JPN voices. Even more so, dont they censor the games too? If I was an America living in JPN I would be importing games, I couldnt handle not having the definitive version of the phenomenal premiere FPS series.

      • They release two versions — first subbed, then dubbed.

    • What is with all the people on here using the term “Jap” like it’s not a racial slur?

      • shion16

        is shorter than japanese

        • i always use jap too, don’t see anything weird

        • Considering it brings back memories of World War II and when Japanese people were in American internment camps, why not use JPN instead or something?

          • I think JPN is much better, then again I always use that so Im used to it.

          • He mentioned it to you before. In fact, that’s how I found out. -_-‘

          • wow its so shocking being on this site and interacting with people who arent indigenous to the CONUS, it blows my mind dude! And most speak flawless English, it has truly worked to degrade the movie based views I have of places outside the US, and giving my tiny bits of courage to someday hope to go to another country

          • vadde939

Your views of places outside the US are based on movies? How often have you spoken to non-American people?

          • @vadde939 It wasnt until like 4 yrs ago that I encountered non Americans, I didnt ever get close to them or hold conversations and even to this day I dont as it is often difficult because I only understand American and the basis of spanish and chinese but not enough to actually hold a conversation with a native speaker since my Spanish is probably on Dora the Explorer level and my Chinese is better left to be written than spoken (ack tones).

As an American I must say that its difficult speaking American to others, they also never understand idioms, making it more challenging.

          • vadde939

hmm yeah I guess idioms could be difficult for people who learned English as a second language. I find it somewhat difficult to believe that you never met non-Americans who speak English as their first language until recently though.

          • shion16 is Chliean. He didn’t know that. In fact, most ESL speakers wouldn’t know that and have come to use it as a contraction. It’s better to just try to let it go next time you see someone use it in an international forum, no matter how compelled you feel to teach people that it’s derogatory and why.

          • Whoa, dude, shion16 is Southern American?! Hey dude, how is it down there?! Ive always wanted to go down there and see what the southern part is doing, lol. Howd you even find this site?!

          • Woah… i seriously have no idea what you are talking about (or lupula, etc)… actually, this is first time i see someone saying jap was “bad” word for some people.

But is pretty basic, we dont pronounce japan like native english speaker people do, the J for us sounds like an H , so it would be like, and Japan is Japon for us, so we would pronounce it “Hapon”…, so we just say Jap, and we native spanish speaker people think of it being pronounced as “hap”…

          • @WildArms – yeah, it’s one of several slurs Americans used to call the Japanese back in World War II. I had a couple granduncles who still used it when I was growing up, since they had been stationed in the Pacific. Didn’t bother me as a kid, but as I’ve gotten older and studied history more, I tend to bristle when I hear it now.

But I can see why, if you weren’t from the United States, you wouldn’t have known. Hell, I know many people born here who didn’t know we did that in the States.

          • shion16

I didnt know that the word jap had that meanings.
Ill remember it and use Jpn instead.

@Tsunayoshi : South america is great, sunny and full of hot girls =P.
I found this site……….i dont remember but its one of my fav ones

        • Guest

but you must fight the A.D.D. not become a slave to it. Struggle within yourself to type out the extra “anese” part and you can overcome the illness. I know it’s painful but believe in yourself!

      • SolidusSnake

They might not be white, you know. It’s a proven fact that only white people are so painfully sensitive to the dignity of other races that they would never use an evil abbreviation like “Jap.”

        • Guest

There’s a funny term for that but I forgot it

      • I’d say even the Japanese are not aware of it. Remember Sengoku Basara’s op? It was titled JAP, and that’s how I found out about this “jap” slur thing, based on people’s complaints (“WTF, LOL, they call their song Jap? LOLZ”). Safe to say that it’s purely American, like Tommy Lee said

  • And the monster is going down. Woa, is it me or i think 17k is pretty low for arcana hearts O.o?

    • HarryHodd

Hmm I was thinking 20k, so it seems about right to me. Not sure whatvprevious games sell.

  • HarryHodd

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 is on PS3, not psp. Game has some legs.

  • woah Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 on the psp? and by square enix? am i looking at this right?

  • Lol.. Mass Effect 2… I think its abit too hard core for the japs.. luckily they did not dub it.. it just sound very very wrong…XD

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Ahhhh!!!! For future reference, the term “jap or japs” is considered offensive! (racial slur I think is what they call it) You were probably just shortening japanese, right?

Also for some reason Japanese love the English language, so much they use it in anime a lot (Hearing their Engrish is funny at times too lol). Wonder how ME2 will do on the PS3 in Japan…

      • I loved hearing Johnny use english in Yumeiro Patissiere Professional was just amazing! Fantastic!!!! (loved that anime to deaths this season)

      • oo.. ok… i do not know about that..cuz it never occur to me that it has any particular racist sort of meaning.. lol..i apologize.. i thought it is ok to use a short form… my bad..

    • raymk

You mean just how their games sometimes sound very very wrong when we dub them. Honestly they can do a better job from english to japanese than we can from japanese to english.

      • Guest

To your ears maybe. But not always maybe to theirs. Don’t assume everyone in Japan thinks Japanese voice acting is perfect. Because it’s not. There’s overacting wherever you go. Just a lot easier to pick out in the language you understand best.

        • When you’re in a country that loves its voice actors (i.e. several doujin projects like Koumajo Densetsu), you can assume not everyone thinks they’re perfect, but there’s a LOT who say otherwise.

      • hmm… not really though to be honest… i’d say both can’t really capture each other’s essence… (maybe one or two)..especially if the story is influenced too much by their own culture and is too different.. I do not think they can really convey certain emotions the way the natives can…

Especially a sci fi game where the Western team was not involve in the VA production. It will turn out very very bad. Some part just do not sound that natural. The same like a Japanese history base anime dub in english.. or even anime that talks about western stories. Well, I personally do not really like it because, I can’t really feel it..

To be honest some English VA had done a great job, like Tales of Vesperia. Yuri and Raven’s VA is quite good! So is FFXIII.. Except Venille. Sach’s role is very good too.. So it depends..

Maybe you should watch Mass Effect advert to get what i mean.. It just sound very wrong in Japanese. I think it is more like the way they advertise it. Lol.. Just my 2 cents..

  • Monster Hunter Portable 3rd by Nintendo? XD

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I’m afraid so my friend… according to siliconera!

    • Fixed, fixed…

  • evospace

    I should have pre-ordered Arcana Heart 3…
It’s sold out in every physical store I went to so far in Tokyo.

    • Wow, that’s crazy to hear. Thanks for letting us know, Evo.

  • Zero_Destiny

Haven’t been keeping up with all these robot games lately but wow was that Macross? I love Robotech that’s awesome that it’s in that game. Here I thought people forget all about it.

  • The ACE:P is very cool. The sad part is that the scenaries feel small (kind of like Gundam Assault) and they don’t have story mode because is preety funny to see character from some universe talking with others.

I like the custom BGM. I put the “time to come” theme in the gespent that you can buy and the Muv Luv opening as the final battle (manly tears)

    • Exkaiser

Which Muv-Luv OP? Roar to the Future or NAME?

    • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

I miss srw I hope banpresto makes another original generations game and hopefully its for consoles

    • Dude, how do you do that custom BGM thing? I still can’t use it :/

      • Start the game, don’t load yet, but instead choose the custom BGM option. It’ll create a folder in music, and dump all your precious fangasm inducing vocal tracks in there

  • goronyan

I wonder if Arcana Heart 3 for 360 did well; I still didn’t have imported it yet because i already have 3 big titles slated for the end of the next month (wich means extra hour in the job クソ♪)

  • PrinceHeir

imagine Monster Hunter on a 3DS, that would sold out so quickly in japan.

nice to see Arcana Heart 3 doing good now release them in the west please.

yay The 3rd Birthday still on the list :P

i know it’s old and all but i wondered how did games like Uncharted 2 fare in japan? they made a jpn dub over it and it sounds awesome. did it performed well?

poor Mass Effect 2 but what can you do, different taste in games and all, i played the demo and i didn’t like the controls and movement, sooo clunky, maybe i’ll get used to it as i progress in the game.

no worries there’s a western game that has been getting positive feedback from japan. which is Deus Ex Human Revolution. i mean it looks badass and all not to mention it has the same feeling as Metal Gear while having it’s own unique style of play and jpn dub(hopefully they can make a dual aduio w/subs). i cannot wait for this game to come out and see the reception in japan :)

i would definitely trade Mass Effect 2 PS3 if Deus Ex Human Revolution features a full third person camera view or both. i would buy 3 copies of the game :P

  • ACE Portable is looking pretty cool. AH3 ain’t doing too bad either! Cool story.

  • Feel bad at the person who was happy that AKB 1/48 Fall In Love With An Idol was going down last week only to see it rise back to the top five this week lol.

Donkey Kong doing really well and Ni no Kuni: The Jet-Black Sorcerer still hanging in there :D For a game somewhat hyped Arcana Heart 3 seems to not be doing well.

well cone to ACE Portable, though I could see Monster Hunter going back top next week unless ACE Portable’s sales remain strong or/and a new release gets strong sales.

  • BOOBIES! That is all.

  • Tom_Phoenix

It’s actually funny how unanticipated ACE Portable was even in the SRW community, yet it still managed to top the charts thanks to the lowered sales of everything else. XD
