This Week In Sales: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Blazes A Trail To PSP

By Ishaan . April 6, 2011 . 4:05pm

Period: The week of March 28th – April 3rd (2011)

Top-seller: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional – 163,008

Nintendo 3DS sales: 42,979 | Total sales: 835,933

Square Enix released an updated version of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 on the Nintendo DS and, unsurprisingly, it debuted at the top of the chart during the week at 163,000 units sold.

Meanwhile, Arc System Works released BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II on the PSP and Nintendo 3DS.

The latter version failed to chart in the top-20 entirely. Note that the PSP and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game are nearly identical barring minor differences, so there was probably little incentive for anyone to pick the game up on 3DS, given the number of PSP owners in Japan.

Other games that failed to chart in the top-20 for the week included: Onechanbara Special (PSP), Virus Shooter XX (3DS) and Mamoru-kun Has Been Cursed! Meikai Katsugeki Widescreen Edition (PS3).

The top-20 chart for the week is as follows:

  • Looks like Mamoro-kun bombed hard :(

  • Amagami, second place >8D Surely, thanks to Haruka

    • Haruka, Kaoru, Ai and Rihoko <3<3<3
In no set order mind you, though I probably love Rihoko the most, I can't withstand girls who like to eat as much as I do~ xD

      • Haha, all the girls of this game pwn xD… still… Haruka~

  • Amagami got an updated re-release?

    • Yeah, for psp, and they released it again for ps2, more events, scenes and stuff, though, i dunno if it’s thaaat different, still, with how great the characters are here, i wouldnt mind putting my hands on it.

And there is some mahjong mode (dont remember if it was in the first version) and you can let the machine play it for you if you dont know the rules and concentrate on getting the girls >8D. This was mentioned on the description so i imagine this mode was for the first game’s version, but you couldnt put the machine to play for you.

The full name of the re-release would be amagami ebikore plus

    • Ren

I think it was a budget re-release and a PSP port. I think there’s more info on it on Andriasang.

  • Duodecim’s nearly moving 500k copies! :D Kind of surprised 3DS Naruto only managed to move 10k.

    • Way too early for some of this stuff to start selling just yet, hahaha. I wouldn’t expect to see anything moving big numbers on 3DS until a couple of high-profile games have set a precedent, whether they come from Nintendo or Square or Capcom or someone else.

      • Zefux

        Kojima? :3c

        • Ahh yea, MGS3 should be huge. :)

          • I thought the last MGS game didnt do that well (Peace Walker) on handhelds. I feel like a remake of an MGS title wouldnt be huge.

          • What

          • Peace Walker did just fine in Japan…it was overseas that it didn’t chart, and I suspect that was largely a piracy issue. That said, MGS3 has a very good reputation already, so I would expect to see it be successful.

    • maybe people are starting to notice that is almost the same as older entries…

    • xxbrothawizxx

The game just sucks. Rather they had given us Ninja Destiny 3D

  • Yui

seein a ps2 game so high up in the charts really wwarms my heart
on the other hand the sheer lack of 3ds games is reel depressin
wwho knowws wwith these charts though theyre a load of pollacks

    • A load of what?!?

      • Yui

Let’s not discuss it. Let’s pretend I never actually said that. ;P

    • … Do pollacks give you and your other fish trouble caligulasAquarium? (And you changed your name yet again?)

      • Yui

Nope. It was just a good opportunaty for a terrible fish pun. :D
(…I can’t help myself sometimes. If I find something I love, it tends to affect me drastically. Addictive personality and whatnot. :P)

  • Wow look at Naruto go, I cant wait for it to come to the US, day 1 for me. Are the 3DS sells on the low side? I was expecting it to have done no less than 150-200K each week to meet those Ninty expectations and to match the popularity of the Nintendo DS?

    Otherwise go Fairy Tail go!

    • cmurph666

      OK… Question?!

How is it you have SOOOO many Day 1 games that you can afford and have the time to play?!?!

      • MrRobbyM

Sprinkle some fairy dust over your head.

        • Wrong. Tsuna is a shounen dude, so it’s all through sheer willpower(never giving up his opnion no matter what), friendship(having at least one investor, his money source) and LOVE(his unbreakable energetic passion for the things he loves, like Naruto, Fairy Tail and Bleach)!!! These things can break Space&Time like nothing!

          • Guest

            and a person’s wallet

          • andref

sort of makes you wonder what he does for a living or maybe lives off money from others

      • Guest

Don’t bother asking this question. The world will never know

      • Huh. I didn’t think anyone actually took him seriously when he claimed Day 1 on every other game announced here.

      • I can easily manage 1-5 hours of playing video games a day and my commute allows me to play handheld games too (for an hour or two). Handheld games dont really cost that much so it never comes out to be a financial burden, while in actuality, I usually just actually average 1-2 console games a month (most ever was like 5 or 6 in the fall). I just plan far in advance and consistently maintain an entertainment fund, really, lol.

    • malek86

Not even the DS was selling 200k units every week, not in March anyway. And with the high price tag and lack of games, I knew it was only a matter of weeks before it started being outsold by the PSP again, essentially once the early adopters dried out. Now we’ll have to see… it will take a slew of important releases, just like on the DS, to sway consumers.

That, or the PSP will be phased out for the NGP, at which point the 3DS will probably sell more.

      • Oh wow I guess youre right, though it wasnt until the DS Lite when the DS seemed to be selling close to 150K each week in 2006 or so…maybe they need a 3DS Lite to do the same.

But why do people automatically assume 3DS will just sell more. I think its difficult to predict consumer tendencies, the same way people said PSP would sell more, and probably the ones that said Gamecube would sell more, and that etc.

  • godmars

A DQ game outsold a two week old FF title. Wow.

Granted FFIV is a technical republish, but still.

    • Aoshi00

FF4 was a good game, but there’s a limit to how many times people could buy the same game over and over again I guess (SNES, PS, GBA, DS, now PSP.. even w/ the sequel tacked on..), still it did sell a lot, and DQ is a no brainer as well.. If it’s a FF7 PS3 remake though, you bet it would sell thru the roof :)

      • Not if a new dragon quest came out that same week.

        • I don’t think Squeenix would be dumb enough to cannibalize their own sales like that.

      • I think a PS3 FF7 remake would probably be the biggest selling title in the system’s history.

        • malek86

Bigger than GT? That’s gonna be difficult.

          … in Japan, maybe.

          • Oh yeah, I totally forgot that people actually buy racing games. lol.

Although, looking it up, there’s already a few Western-developed titles for PS3 that have already sold more than GT5 (Black Ops, GTAIV, etc…). So, I was a bit overenthusiastic on this one.

Still, it would definitely make the top 10 sales. 3-4 million easily.

        • FF7 sold that good back in the day? The FF fanbase has me so confused, I thought IX or even IV was their cream of the crop games.

          • puchinri

IX is my favorite, but I also didn’t think it was that popular. But within the past year or so, I have found that it is indeed icnredibly popular. It’s hard to say. But I also think that maybe, some titles are more popular here than they are in Japan and vice versa (as far as FF goes). Here, FF is more popular than DQ, but it’s the reverse in Japan. It’s pretty interesting.

        • Code

I think it’d be a big seller, but probably not the biggest in the system’s history, were from a era gone by, most kids now a days never even played the original FF7, or really care opo;; What’s left of our generation that are still gamers is a fairly small niche at this point by contrast. Don’t get me wrong, love FF7, think it’s one of the best games out there >ww<'

          • You know what, though? There’s a whole generation of people out there who want to play FFVII because they’ve seen Advent Children or played Crisis Core, but they can’t get past the graphics of the original. My most recent ex was like that. She did both. Saw Advent Children, got Crisis Core for her PSP and was all excited to play the installment between the two, so she asked if I had it. I said yes, and she wanted to come over and play it. When I put the disc in, she put the controller down at the first battle and said, “I can’t play this. These graphics hurt my eyes. They’re remaking this, right? I’ll just play that.”

It’s sad, but true that there’s a whole generation who can’t deal with PS1 polygons and would probably buy it if it was all nice and HD-looking.

          • Id have to agree considering how popular Advent Children Complete and Crisis Core is, people would be willing to play if they were remade..its not like gamers of today are relunctant to try remakes which have been continually part of releases each year so the market is there.

          • puchinri

I think FF7 is very popular, but also over-hyped, but mostly by people who have played it. I mean, I know there are plenty of people who haven’t and have a interest in it because of AC and CC, but that number is probably way smaller than those who have already played the first. For most people, 7 (or 8) was their first FF as it is.

          • Having the FF name attached would mean the game would probably sell at least on par with FF13. But Puchinri is right too: ardent fans of the original have an unfortunate tendency to seriously overestimate the game’s power. This “whole generation of people out there” who are supposedly dying to play it is a pretty big stretch…or more likely, mostly composed of the generation who played it back in 1997. Since we’re giving personal anecdotes to support our points here: I can’t say Advent Children gave me any interest in a remake, or any desire to try the original.

…Given SE’s current overload of projects and protracted development times, do you really think it would be ready before PS4? Hahaha.

          • Keep in mind, I say this as someone who is more of a fan of IX and X (and XIII, actually) than VII. It’s not my favorite of the series, but I think between people who played the original and those who won’t play it because it looks archaic to them, a FFVII remake would be a huge seller.

Now, do I think Squeenix will bring it out? Well, that would be the smart thing to do and no one could ever accuse Wada of being that.

      • Bakuryukun

If they put the game on more systems, more people can play it, I see no problem with this, people who don’t want to buy the game multiple times, could just….not do that.

        • Aoshi00

And a lot of people won’t.. of course S-E is free to milk the old games as much as they could.. I think they do count on people buying it again and again instead of those getting to experience the game for the first time.

  • Kris

Although I never got BBCT Portable, I’m still hoping BBCSII portable sees the light of day in the states! Not a bad showing this week, either!

  • john411

So much for Mamoru-kun PS3 proving that shmups have a market there. Looks like they’re going to be on the 360 for good this gen.

    • HarryHodd

      Did it release this week??

Edit: oh yep reading comprehension FTW.

    • Aoshi00

I think the thing is pretty much all the people who wanted to play Mamoru-kun in Jpn have alrdy played it (I mean what shmup fans at this point still haven’t gotten a 360, are people actually waiting for a Deathsmiles PS3 port?).. I planned on double dipping for the artbook and the widescreen mode.. but I alrdy spent an arm and a leg getting the LE before, just not too crazy about spending another $100 on an upgrade.. would’ve been nice if they patch the initial loading time (before you start the game) for the 360 ver though..

      • Belenger

Not too mention the wide “enhanced part” are just the levels separated to be played at one stage a pace, with no difficulty going up by rank, kind of a terrible letdown.

Story/Arcade and the rest are exactly the same as 360, with some added sound glitches that are gonna make me sell the game unless patched >_>.

        • Aoshi00

oh wow didn’t realize widescreen was only for time/score attack and not arcade mode (I guess it makes sense since the 2 DLC chars can’t be used in story mode either).. thanks for the heads up, good thing I didn’t double dip (I almost did but it’s sold out on AmiAmi lol..).. I mean I liked the game but not enough to buy it again.. gotta pop in Mamoru-kun again one of these days.. the long loading before the game starts was just a little Dodonpachi Daioujou..

          • Belenger

Yeah, worst part is that for the Mekiu, Mekai me.. the new mode, sometimes the game misses a routine loading on the character select so you are left with a few seconds of silence and then it pops out a noisy glitch, really something small that any QC could have noted within seconds of playing.

Not as epic as dai ou jyo loading, hell nothing will be as epic as that it was so much that warranted some really well done MADs.

Bottom line 5pb and Cyberfront should be shoot to death for attempting to port games hence why I’m on not gonna preorder bullet soul.

          • Aoshi00

lol hilarious video.. I think the girl was from a Nintendo spot? So they FINALLY done patching DOJ after 2 years eh? I just got the update, loading is still a bit on the long side, but much improved and not so unbearable anymore (back then you could go make dinner)..

I still loved DOJ though despite the not so perfect port.. and 5pb has brought me many games that I like.. the Phantom Breaker demo was pretty boring.. I was going to order Bullet Soul after seeing the gameplay videos and wanted the soundtrack, but I have many games to finish so I’ll hold off for now and would wait for some reviews..

But yea, these bugs are just annoying.. like No More Heroes Paradise..

          • Even if a third-party company 5pb no longer works with wasn’t responsible for most of the DOJBLEX debacle, they made up for it with the excellent Ketsui port.

            Bullet Soul will be great.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, like honorless said, the Ketsui port was actually A-OK and smooth sailing w/ no loading at all.. so I really don’t have that much beef w/ 5pb.. I would get Bullet Soul if the reviews are positive.. just hard to pass up on any good shmup..

          • Code

rar, did I just witness… a.. music video based on… Dai ou Jou’s long load times? I’m pretty sure this is by far one of the greatest things ever crafted by human hands.

      • john411

The idea was there were plenty of shmup fans who didn’t have a 360, only a PS3 and that this game would tap into them and prove it. And then pave the way for all future shmups to abandon the 360 and move to the PS3.

        We now see the reality.

        • Code

rar, I could cut the irony with a knife >w<; But shmups won't be leaving 360 any time soon, although I've love to see them come out on both platforms >w<' I think there is still plenty of PS3 owners who'd be interested.

Yaaay! Good to see Amagami doing so well!!

  • Does Blazblue Continuum shift 2 have Online play on the 3DS?

    • Nope, no online on either system.

  • Zero_Destiny

Yay!!! Joker 2 is on top of the world er Japan ^_^ Maybe we’ll see a release after all. That would be really cool. :)

  • malek86

I say the terrible d-pad of the 3DS may have impacted people’s decision of buying Blazblue on the system.

  • PrinceHeir

    good work Dissidia :D

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd still selling huh? :P

  • PrinceHeir

Dissidia 012 and Final Fantasy IV complete collection is in the top 20 :)

Monster Hunter is still on the charts O_O

can’t wait for FFIV collection and the inevitable FFV, FFVI Enhanced versions.
