This Week In Sails: One Piece Cruises Onto The Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . June 1, 2011 . 4:30pm

Period: The week of May 23rd – May 29th (2011)

Top-seller: One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP – 80,488

Nintendo 3DS sales: 24,283 | Total sales: 1,037,542

One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP provided the Nintendo 3DS with a bit of a boost upon its release last week, with the game itself claiming the top spot on the software sales chart at close to 85,000 units sold. 3DS hardware sales rose from sub-18k units the week prior to just over 24,000 units.

Meanwhile Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return to Your Side didn’t fare as well in terms of hard numbers, but this is now more or less the norm for any Wii releases that aren’t identifiably high-profile, given the state of the Wii market in Japan at present. Pandora’s Tower sold 21,445 units during the week.

Cave also released Red Katana Shin for the Xbox 360 the same week, selling as little as 5,603 copies of the game. For the sake of comparison, Deathsmiles 2X sold 16,112 copies on the Xbox 360 during the week of its own debut in 2010.

As far as current releases go, Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing DS reappeared at #12 on the software sales chart for the week, after being completely absent the week prior. In fact, the game wasn’t even in the top-50, which makes us wonder what happened. A complete shortage of copies, perhaps?

The top-20 software sales chart for the week is as follows:

Although Pandora’s Tower is #3, is 21,445 considered “good” for a Wii title? Even though the development costs are less than HD games, that still sounds really low.

    • HarryHodd

Bomb. 21k is very low for a jrpg.

  • TenRX

One Piece is one of the top manga for readers, more like that settles the top in the sales ranking also.

Ouch for Gungnir in the other way…

But Oh man Funimation really has done good with One Piece. Because of you I had to go back on watch some of the DVDs. lol They got the emotions done so well in the dub. And the fights are still awesome too. One Piece dub is just so great. ^_^

Is it weird that I think Luffy sounds constipated?
        Besides that, everyone sounds fine

  • http://twitter.com/mangeezer jerry

That makes 4 bombs in a row for CAVE, guess we shouldn’t expect any more shmups, at least not on the 360 :(

  • mikanko

Would like to see Akai Katana and Atelier Totori do better.  =/

    • https://twitter.com/RaiohV ShinkaRaioh

Well it’s “the Best” edition for Totori, I believe it sold over 100.000 copies at its time, which would be considered “good”?

      • mikanko

ah, I wasn’t paying much attention.

  • Aoshi00

I’ve heard only good things for Pandora’s Tower.. and the Akai Katana Shin demo was awesome.. too bad good games don’t always sell..  can’t wait for my copies from AmiAmi (I just got my first Saint Seiya Cloth Myth, Pisces, so awesome! I’ve stepped into a deep trap now..) but need to finish LA Noire fast..

  • HarryHodd

Seems like low sales all around. I guess the top two aren’t too bad.

  • AnimeRemix

Now if only this One Piece game would get announced for a American release…

  • Darkrise

Things aren’t looking too good for Akai Katana and neither is Gungnir… =( It’s all low sales.

    • malek86

I don’t see how Gungnir is doing badly. Those numbers are pretty much the same as any other Sting game from the last 5 years. You’d guess they already expected it and budgeted accordingly.

Akai Katana is doing pretty badly though. I wonder if that will change something in Cave’s plans for the 360. Probably not, but we should see at least a decrease in output… they have been publishing too many games in so little time.

  • Ultima Arcana

Wow, I knew Pandora’s Tower wasn’t going to break any records or anything, but 21k is absolutely abysmal. I was guessing it would at least make 40-50k. For comparison’s sake, when The Last Story debuted just back in February it sold 114k copies.

Also, something that’s worth pointing out is that this is the first week since it’s debut back on December 1st that Monster Hunter Portable 3rd didn’t make top 20, although that’s very obviously because of the announcement of the PS3 version.

    Akai Katana ;_;

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joshua-Smith/700685906 Joshua Smith

Akai Katana looks like a great game as well. It could very well be the case that CAVE games will be selling better in the West soon enough. I really hope CAVE is able to find some success here. Do you think that CAVE has simply ported too many games over to the 360 and now the novelty has worn off?

  • http://dannscheid.tumblr.com/ Daniel Scheid

Gee, I sure wish One Piece would sail to American shores…

  • http://twitter.com/NeverUnplaying Sonny Oliveira

Reading these week after week over the year, it just seems nothing is selling as well in Japan. I rarely saw a top ten with 4 digit sales before this year. I can’t solely blame the earthquake as well because this trend started before that.
