Digimon World Re:Digitize Goes Back To The Series’ Starting Point

By Ishaan . July 20, 2011 . 10:55pm

Namco Bandai have started to talk about Digimon World Re:Digitize on their Digimon game blog. Along with the first blog entry come the first screenshots of the game. The concept for Re: Digitize, according to the blog, is a “return to the starting point”.

This refers to the original Digimon World, released in 1999. Namco say that the original game is still the one that is most praised by fans, and Re:Digitize will inherit certain systems from that game.

Digimon World Re:Digitize follows a 14-year-old boy who travels between the real and digital worlds. Suzuhito Yasuda, known for his work on Durarara!! and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor’s characters, is creating the characters for this game as well. Namco Bandai say they’ll reveal the game’s developer in their next blog post.

Huh, this actually sounds pretty interesting. The Devil Survivor artist chipping in helps a lot too.

    • Guest

Certainly a lot more than the Death Note artist did with Castlevania Judgment…

      • That art style was good for the series (imo), it’s just most of the ridiculous costume designs that threw me off.

        • epy

You made me remember Simon’s shorts -_-. Simon Belmont can never get a good design despite being the most famous Belmont. I mean, I LOVE Kojima’s art usually but her design for him was bizarre as hell.

          • Guest

Wait are you talking about CV Judgment Simon or PS1 Castlevania Chronicles Simon with the red hair? Because they both had shorts….

Kojima was the default cover artist for CV up until some of the DS games & the newest PS3/360 one.  CV Judgment used Death Note artist.

  • It took this long to realize that ?

Anyway, make a great game and then localize it. Hopefully it won’t take 12 years for them to realize that (I hope).

  • aoihana

Sounds great! I loved the original Digimon. Suzuhito Yasuda is an amazing artist, I love his work in Yozakura Quartet. Let’s see how this turns out.

  • It’s going to be like digimon world, huh? I wonder if that means you still get to raise all the digimon in digifarms. Although having a couple of starters that digivolve into a million things was interesting to figure out, I always found it to be just a little unnecessarily complex. If I wanted a specific digimon, it would be pretty hard to figure out without a guide how to evolve one.

It does look like we’re going back to having partner digimon though, assuming Agumon is permanent or something.

    • Digimon World definitely was the best in my mind. But as with most things, they tend to continue to add countless, confusing systems. Or I guess in some cases simple? Since I think there were games that enabled to digivolve from whatever to whatever, so it kind of ruined many aspects. And I never really liked fusing for some odd reason, in general. Expanding the town was awesome and collecting cards, albeit pointless, was fun. Minigames…of course you can’t forget all the remains when you had to go, haha… though, I never did beat the game. I’d like to see an expanded remake.

Actually, I would like to see ANY monster game [usually dungeon crawlers…].
I never really counted pokemon, since you didn’t well… train them per se? It was more of simply capturing.

Azure dreams I loved. Monster Rancher. Jade Cocoon as well.
And whatever I’m forgetting. Bring out more monster simulations damnit~~.

    • Exkaiser

I thought when I played the game that it was strange you had to be an total jerk to your partner in order to get them to digivolve into their default family.

Being too nice turns them into a literal pile of crap. Oh, if I had only figured that out when I was actually playing the game.

      • Yeeeah! Because it turns out that you’re spoiling them. Which happened to all of my monsters in Monster Rancher too, by the way.

That’s why I kind of like the evolution style of the newer Digimons, because they tell you the requirements – or at least what kind of -mons that they can digivolve into.

So yeah, unnecessarily complex. Though… it was still kind of fun/rewarding when I got it right. :>

  • Vyrhn

going back to the first? it means we’ll have pooping digimon again huh? interesting :)

  • Yukito

Do that, and if it lives up to DW1, I will actually consider getting this. My mother even loved DW1, and she doesn’t play games.

  • Electrium

I’m totally down for getting nostalgia rubbed all over me.  I’m a huge fan of the character designs in DRRR too…sounds like this game is right up my alley.

  • AzureNova

I didn’t know Agumon was a demon dinosaur! lol

  • kevinposta

Oh! Great news! I loved the original Digimon World, raising them and stuff.
This game is looking great! I hope it turns out to be that fun!

  • kroufonz

    this got me excited!

but PSP and namco bandai published anime JRPG is one of the worst possible combination for the game to get localized (T-T)

  • Somazu

Oh wow, i really enjoyed raising digimon in DW1, so i hope it’ll live up to that.
I also hope it gets localised, as the none of the DS games have been since Dawn/dusk. although seeing as this is on psp theres hope i guess.

  • Oh wow, I just remembered how much I used to love Digimon. Hope this gets localised, I LOVED digimon world.

  • Dunno. Played DW1 for a few hours and wasn’t “hooked.” Maybe it was DW2 that spoiled me, especially since that was an awesome game. DW3 was good too, including the soundtrack. Then again, all of the soundtracks made those games awesome.

Hopefully this game will give me more that what DW1 didn’t.

    • DW3 had a number of design flaws, many of them rather obvious. It’s not much of a surprise in hindsight though; it’s a Bandai game, and they’ve never been good at quality control in their games.

However, when it comes to the soundtrack, the game just rocks:

  • Room201

Yes! My interest for this game is growing by the day.

  • I’ll still be forever awaiting Digimon World 2 on the PSN.

  • Wow…the graphic is way better than some of the 3ds games…

  • Code

haha oh Digimon, you were always a little weird but that was part of your charm! rar, I still fondly remember getting the first game for my birthday, and playing it all afternoon with my cousins at my grandma’s house owo; I kind of hope this one is similar, never did play any of the later DW world games, but the notion always tempted me.

  • So, is the dude beside Agumon Suzuhito Yasuda’s rendition of Ryo Akiyama?

  • Town looks good, not sure about the artwork used for dialogues though. The protagonist has these low contrast colors and thin outlines, while the monster looks almost hand drawn. Placeholders perhaps?

    • Bunzi

I’ve noticed something similar in MegaTen games. I guess they don’t think it’s worth the time or effort to consolidate the art style of the monsters with that of the humans in these kind of games.

  • SolNeko

looks AWESOME! original digimon world game was great and i love the drawings in this. definately day one buy!

  • About time! I was just thinking what happened to Digimon games. Now the question shifts to: Will this be translated?

I’m also interested in seeing this game’s Digimon lines, both recurring and debut; they did that with a lot of Digimon games.

    P.S: Goggles once again.

    • Yu_TheKing

It isn’t Digimon unless the protagonist has goggles on :P

  • XypherCode

yeah the character really looks like the ones on Devil Survivor and Durarara :P
i think i’ll pick up this game for the art :D

  • Zenkito

….I hope Digimon has enough of a fan base outside of Japan so it can be localized  for NA/EU fans.

  • Character design definitely looks Digimon. Nice, I remember when Digimon World used to be the game that would have made me buy a PSOne back in the day, however, I just could never commit to that much to play a game at that point in time.

  • There are still digimon games? I though that era died years ago.

    • NEVUR! (there is even an anime ongoing or maybe it already finished? but it must had not been long ago, not as good as the first ones though…)

      • The first two Digimon series are awful compared to the third. So I’m not sure what you’re getting at by “first ones”.

        • For you maybe, but those were the ones that put digimon on the map, and of course, made it famous, wether you like them or not.

          • Just because sometime was first doesn’t mean it’s the best. The first Transformers series for example, is one of the worst in the franchise. It may have got the ball rolling, but it definitely didn’t keep it rolling.

          • Who said they were the best? I just said that the last digimon isnt as good as the first ones

        • xflame10

the third was weird with that trading card bull.

    • There is a Digimon series on TV in Japan as a I type.

    • Several Digimon games came out on the DS.

  • MarkMario

I was about to say that he looked a lot like a Persona character o.o
    *Gives Evoker*

    • LOL

    • Exkaiser

      Wrong character designer.

      • MarkMario

It’s still Shin Megami Tensei though.

  • dragoon_slayer12

Me and my brother and sister love part one and the only other one is bought was 4. 1 felt like Zelda meets monster rancher (I think that’s the name of it. The one where you create monsters from other games. I miss that too.), and I never got to beat it cuz my I saved one day before my digimon dies, with no way of saving him. Can’t wait for this. Looks great

  • SirRichard

I still remember nearly throwing my controller out the window when that Agumon I tried to raise very precisely to get something decent when it digivolved turned into a Numemon.

Sometimes I wish they’d just take the game wholesale, give it a new coat of paint and throw it out there again. This seems to be close enough.

What’s it for, incidentally? Maybe it’s just me, but it looks a bit too good to be a PSP game.

    • Exkaiser

      It’s a PSP game.

  • I need this game. Im importing it lol. Then hoping it comes out in the US. Just like with Medabots.

  • YES even if it doesn’t get localized I can still play it! Praise the PSP!!!

  • Yeah!! Getting this!

  • Daisuke Inuzuka

YEAHH! my hearts yearns for this
    @[email protected]

  • A Digimon game with character that reminds me of Devil Survivor…
Hmmmm, it would be amazing if Atlus made the plot for this one =)

    • theworldofnoboundries

U want better story? They should ask Tomino to do the story. I believe it will rock the fans with how brutal the story could be.

  • Rihawf

Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeect! If that’s how it goes, then it will be perfect. The beginning at our generation D:
This will be sucessfull, for sure!

  • hmm

    seems interesting

gonna hold off judgment till I see some more gaemplay info

and I still can’t get over the main character looking exactly like the main character in Devil Survivor lol

  • The first one receives the most praise because it wasn’t trying to be any other RPG cliche, especially not a monster-collector.  DW2 was a dungeon crawler with monster collecting.  DW3 was RPG with monster collecting.  DW4 was a generic action RPG.

DW1 was also most like the actual series.  One kid (you should be allowed to choose genders) has one partner Digimon, and the two bond over the course of the game.  Your partner never really died, they just “reset” carrying over experience, able to try new evolution paths.  Pretty darn cool to me.  I’m just upset its a PSP title.  Also, it’ll probably not get localized because the digimon craze in the west is dead.  Oh well.

    • Exkaiser

DW1 is really just a video game version of the Digimon virtual pet toys.

  • Enma_Kozato

I’m not hating on Agumon, but is he the only digimon we can start out with? I remember in DW depending on how you answered the questions at the beginning you could start with Agumon or Gabumon.

    • Then it digivolves to Numemon. orz

      • Enma_Kozato

Haha, depending on how you raised it.

  • Can’t wait to see more about this game; all of a sudden I feel an urge to get back into Digimon Lol.

  • It’s for the PSP?! Heck yeah! I’m gonna get this.

  • OMG! :) God has listened to me! Digimon World was my favorite and the one which I truly considered a digimon game as digimon was based on tamagotchi. Digimon World 2 and 3 were more like rpgs with digimon characters. *_* I want this! I want this! I’ve been replaying Digimon World this past week and I can’t believe how much fun I’ve been having with the game.

  • I am excited!

that was the best digimon game

And this is for PSP, which is perfect.

The art looks great too. HOW COULD THIS GO WRONG?!

  • Z

digimon world 1 was absolutely my favorite digimon game, and easily one of my favorite ps1 games! I love that this is on the psp!

Any word of if this is coming to the US?

  • It saddens me that my PSP can no longer read UMD’s cause I want this game….

  • I really like how many details are in the screenshot of the town.
    I want to explore it.
With traditional RPG trespassing and looting.

  • Take Devil Survivor MC design -> make him younger -> make him alot happier -> replace headphones w/ horn or cat things with goggles -> profit.

But seriously, that’s one happy grin. It’s getting me excited already…

  • Gohobojoe

    No freaking way.
It’s system is based off the first!? Awesome.

  • I SO WANT!!!

  • thebanditking

I really liked the first two seasons of Digimon back in the day and this looks awesome. Though I doubt we will ever see it localized since Digimon is pretty much vaporware outside of Japan. Also it amazes me how great PSP games look after all this time on the market

  • Plays like the original….I don’t know what to say but, HELL YEAH I approve of this I love the original and Digimon in general.  I saw the magazine scans and for what people said who could read moon speak it sounds awesome, the models looks pretty good for a psp game, so buying this day one.

  • Kim Labrea

News at bandai digimon site! Now with suport for 1-4 players…
