Monster Hunter is a powerful franchise. Still if I was Sony I would be really upset that the money invested to help get this in HD. Did nothing for my platform during the opening week.
     PS3 | 33.141 | 29.666 | 25.053 |
The PS3 only got a 4000 increase over last week. Even if the game is HD people would rather play it on the PSP than on their Televisions. Japan really is the home of the portable handheld.

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Hmmmm…Well, there’s also a lot of other possibilities. Like maybe some people already had it on PSP and didn’t want to buy it a second time. Or maybe some people ALREADY OWNED PS3′S because of the myriad of other games they wanted to play. Really. You have some very odd ideas some times. The game outsells everything else this week in Japan by a pretty big margin and you’re still reaching to find ways that Sony screwed up.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

Software is made to move hardware. Sony got Capcom to make a HD port of a exclusive game to sell on their home console. Capcom benefited from the move, and Sony didn’t even though they created the engine. That the 3rd parties used to port PSP to PS3 games. So yes I assume they were expecting to gain something from it.  Everyone is under the assumption that people want everything in HD. That people want to play their games on their big screens TV. These numbers don’t lead me to that conclusion. This is exactly what happen with Frontier and the 360. Microsoft had a exclusive Monster Hunter Title, but that game didn’t help the sell any extra 360s. So ya I’m not going to sit here, and say Sony did something wrong. I do know they aren’t looking at the those PS3 numbers, and feeling good about them. The PS3 just got a price cut, and now has a new Monster Hunter on it. It should be flying off the selves. Remember the Wii is the best selling system in Japan. So the PS3 has way more systems it can possibly move before it hits it’s limit.

        • HistorysGreatestMonster

You mean the 360 exclusive Monster Hunter that wasn’t actually exclusive since it was a port of an old PC-title? You’re talking about two ports and saying they prove some nonsense or the other that it means people don’t want things in HD.

If this was a new PS3-exclusive Monster Hunter, it’d be pushing units. You already have an agenda, as seen by a lot of your previous posts, and so you’re waxing over details to try to prove your point. You haven’t. Neither Monster Hunter title were new. Neither one was exclusive. The sales of both don’t prove anything about HD systems. Do you think people are going to rush out and buy a new system just to play a port of a game they most likely already have?

That’d be like expecting the Dragon Quest Collection to put the Wii back on top in Japan, because, hey, Japanese people like Dragon Quest. Now, Dragon Quest X, on the other hand, if moved to the Wii U, would be a guaranteed system seller. Why? Because it’s not a port. Duh!

          • kupomogli

            I agree.

            @TheWonandOnly:disqus

HD collections are really just cash ins of an already pre existing product.  It’s there to make extra money off a product that was already developed, not to sell systems.  Yes, the topic is MHP3 and the Japanese market, but if you turn towards the western market and God of War HD.  With God of War HD, Sony is only tapping into the market of those who did not buy one, or either game, or might just want to get an HD version.  Don’t you think a PS3 owner would already have God of War 3 and God of War HD Collection, so it’d make sense to release the PSP games to get extra money off a pre existing product.  You could even say the PS3 version may even sell better being that Ghost of Sparta had barely any sales in comparison to the rest of the series, including Chains of Olympus.  I won’t jump into that topic, but you can obviously tell where I’m going with it.

Will the games alone sell systems?  Maybe, but probably not.  The PS3, 360, Wii, PSP, and DS already have a sizable library and even a huge exclusive title won’t push many units, much less a port that most anyone who’s a gamer in Japan already owns.  Exclusives now are just padding the already existing libraries to keep the platform holders where they’re at, happy, and bring those few gamers who have yet to purchase their console more of a reason to purchase it.

Now the 3DS and Vita on the other hand.  Both systems being new, games will sell systems.  These systems haven’t been out six years.  They don’t have an already massive line up of must own games that are only for those specific systems.  I still don’t think a port will do much, but a new game will make all the difference.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CalientePhoenix Phoenix Caliente

Using an updated port of a game that millions already owned implies that people prefer to play on PSP and that Sony actually put money towards this title? Perhaps we should believe that if Sony threw money around, it will go towards the PS Vita Monster Hunter title?

      • Thomas Maloney

But if they release the HD port in America and find that it sells far better than the PSP versions, then the future of Monster Hunter overseas will be a bright one indeed =D

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

The overseas market will never, ever be used as a gauge for Monster Hunter; don’t get your hopes up too much. Japan’s portable market is where Monster Hunter thrives. For a number of reasons, it will never be as big in the west, either on portables or on consoles.

Don’t mean to shatter your hopes or anything, but this is just one of those things where they wouldn’t want to risk messing with the very lucrative existing market.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

What was the point of updating or porting it then. Just so Capcom  could sell even more copies of the game. No Sony created the PSP to PS3 line for the sole purpose of giving their home console more exclusive content. If the game is not going to help them move hardware it serves no real purpose. Sony created the engine that allows the ports to be made. So yes they did spend money, and was looking forward to benefit from it. The same thing can be said about Monster Hunter Frontier for the 360. Another exclusive Monster Hunter game that maybe sold well, but didn’t help Microsoft move hardware. If we are talking about home consoles the Wii is the only system to get helped by a Monster Hunter game. I understand that the game has already sold 4 million copies on the PSP. Still it goes to show that a game being in HD alone is not a reason for a consumer. To go out, and spend their money again on that product. Now when the Vita comes out if the title moves huge software numbers. At the same time moves Vita hardware. It will show that Monster Hunter is a game Japanese gamers would rather have on a portable. With things like being in HD ,and on a bigger screen not being important.

        • HistorysGreatestMonster

You seem to have difficulty differentiating ports from exclusives. Something that is a port, by its very nature, is no longer an exclusive. But that is not your only problem.

  • http://www.jb2x.com/wordpress/ JB2X

An Imageepoch game that sold over 100K copies on first week?  Props to them!  I sure hope they more than break bank.

Yes sir, waiting for Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD over here, yes sir.

    Is it never yet? ;-;

  • malek86

Those are good numbers for MH, but not as much as the Wii game (not even worth comparing to the portable versions, they are on an entirely different planet).

An eventual MH4 should sell much more, probably. Of course, we don’t yet know if it’s gonna be a PS3 game.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I’d expect we’ll be hearing news of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on Vita and maybe the 3DS one before MH4. Tri still hasn’t gotten an updated port, which they always do, and I doubt they’d put it on Wii at this point…

Curious to see how the Vita one does, considering it’s the second time they’re porting it. They haven’t said if it’s going to be retail or a PSN download or what, aside from that brief mention at the Vita conference earlier this year.

      • malek86

Could the 3DS one end up being a portable, updated version of Tri? Something like “Monster Hunter Tri-D”. Yeah, that sounds cheesy.

There is some chance we’ll know more at TGS or at the earlier Nintendo conference, so that would be one game out of the way.

        • FireCouch

After you said “Monster Hunter Tri-D”, I’m positive it will be on 3DS.  It’s too lame not to be true.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I agree with you on that. It is too corny to pass up.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I’d imagine Tri-G if anything, sticking with the naming convention they’ve used all along. Even the Monster Hunter Diary spin-off update was called “G”.

Man, I’d love to see an updated Tri port. Personally, I much prefer Tri’s tribal village to the Japanese village in Portable 3rd. I feel like I’ve already seen too much of that with games like Okami.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

Well we well see something soon I hope. I would rather see a updated Tri with new content, and features. Something that makes it different than Portable 3, but still comparable when it comes to content.

          • Exkaiser

Personally, I prefer the Japanese village, since the first game already did the tribal village.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Oh, I totally get that. But in my case, Tri was my introduction to the series, so…

          • malek86

Yeah, but Monster Hunter Tri-G sounds like a smartphone game.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

            Maybe they’ll follow Nintendo’s lead:

Super Mario -> Super Mario 3D Land
Monster Hunter 3 Tri -> Monster Hunter 3D Tri

            (that sounds terrible)

The problem with Tri-D is, what do they call the next one? They can’t say Monster Hunter 4D. :P

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

Not gonna lie, I am jelly of Monster Hunters numbers and it makes me sad that other games cannot be as successful.  I forget though, was this budget priced? probably around the price of the psp game?

  • theworldofnoboundries

Good Job to Gihren no Yabou on PSP. Hope more gamer in Japan will buy that holy gems.

  • Kibbitz

100k for BRS, eh? Nice, though I did expect it to do better than Fate/Extra. If only BRS was better though -_- I loved the 10 odd hours it took to finish the story, but the other 25 odd hours to do the other miscellaneous crud wasn’t as fun by far.

  • PrinceHeir

come on capcom release this overseas!!!!!!

i know your having a problem with the network of SCEA and SCEE but..

    i just can’t wait argh >___<

  • Exand

Proud to be one of the 287,829 who contributed to the MHP3rd HD.

Now hopefully they come out with MH4 for Vita and PS3 so I don’t have to look at this pixelated menu interface….
