This Week In Sales: Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection Goes On A Solo Quest

Last week was slow. Very slow, thanks to the Tokyo Game Show. The one major game that slipped out grabbed the top spot, and that was Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection for the Wii. Watching how long-tailed sellers like Dragon Quest hold up on the charts post-release is always fun, so the next few weeks should be interesting.

5pb’s Dunamis15 also made it into the top-20 software sales chart, but the PlayStation 3 version was all the way down at the #14 spot with 5,970 copies sold. The other two new games on the chart were an Idea Factory title and Winnie the Pooh: 100 Acre Wood’s Cooking Book at #20.

In the hardware category, Nintendo 3DS hardware sales received a boost of nearly 10,000 units from the week prior. Was it because of the slowdown in competition or did 10,000 people suddenly get really excited for Monster Hunter? (Probably more the former)

The top-20 software sales chart for the week is as follows:

Also, the 3DS is the best selling console this month. Not to shabby for a “doomed” handheld :P And the good games aren’t even out, wait till around the holidays to see it sell like crazy :D

  • malek86

Uhm, I thought Dunamis15 would sell a bit more, but I guess not having an anime to back you up makes things more difficult. Or maybe buyers were divided on PS3 and 360. Any words on the total sales on both consoles?

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

I think that is just how new VN sells, i think it did well, for a VN, i remember how happy 5pb was with steins;gate 50k~ or something they sold, it was huge for a VN it seems.

Dont quote me tho, that is just what i think after what i have seen.

      • malek86

Yep, I know S;G was too out of reach with its 50k sales (it had much more favorable conditions too). But I think 20k overall could have been reachable. It was even multiplatform, and not a simple PC port either, so it can’t have been too cheap to make.

Well, hopefully 5pb is just fine with these sales.

        • Dokurochan

Well even PC VNs don’t usually reach 20K. The latest game from Key (Clannad, Kanon) Rewrite only sold around 24k at release. Daiteikoku which was the best-selling eroge for first half of the year only sold around 28k and both these companies are some of the largest and most popular VN groups.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

They’re probably looking very, very hard right now at how well Steins;Gate did on PSP…

      • kroufonz

you mean how Steins;Gate did very very well on psp

    • Aoshi00

Steins;Gate sold well way before it had an anime though, it was because it sold well it got adapted into an anime, not the other way around..

I got Dunamis 15 for 360 just to continue my VN collection on the same system (I was debating on which system to get the game for), I heard the load time for PS3 is longer..  seems like kinda a gory and violent game compared to Steins;Gate, it’s more like Chaos;Head (which I didn’t finish) so I’m not sure if it’s my cup of tea.. hope going thru the story in the perspective of the 5 different chars is interesting..

I only played a little bit of the demo and waiting for the full game..  I really loved Steins;Gate because it didn’t depend on gore to be shocking, just a good story.. also this might be minor, but for the PS3 ver, the btn config for OK and cancel is reversed and can’t be mapped, but for the 360 ver OK is A and cancel is B so it’s much better..

BTW, anyone who’s interested in the headphones I might let it go.. I got the LE mainly for the soundtracks..

    • kroufonz

that sales not unexpected tough, it’s new ip and that isn’t so much hype about it either, almost 6k sales on PS3 is not bad, altough 360 didn’t enter top 20 is a bit suprissing since 5pb relation are supposed to be more close to 360 crowds.

and looks like this will encourage even more vn for PS3, like how just recently piacci (former gn-software) announced suzukaze no melt for ps3:P

Nice to see that Xillia is in second place– I wonder what it’s sales would have been if it wasn’t such a slow week?

I hope we get Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection over here– maybe a Christmas special?

    • Hraesvelgr

I think they probably wouldn’t be much higher? Japanese sales generally drop off sharply after the first week, unless it’s something like Monster Hunter or Pokemon.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Would be kind of awesome if Xillia gets to 1 million >8D

    • DanteJones

“kind of”?? It would be AMAAAAAZIIIIIIING! *flies off on a rainbow*

  • Darkrise

Geez, it really was a slow week. Happy to see that Xillia is still up, hopefully it can reach 600k sales and maybe more. =P Also hoping Dunamis15 would sell even more this week, it really looks interesting.

  • Suicunesol

The 3DS received a boost obviously because of SENRAN KAGURA!!! :P

In any case, this chart is very weird. Xillia is in second place, however the number of units it’s moving has fallen dramatically–nearly 90%. It sold over 500k last week, but doesn’t sell more than 50k this week. It’s not going to hit one million like that. Not a chance.

On the other hand, Wii Sports Resort moved from 10th place all the way up to 4th place. Kirby Mass Attack, LoZ, Pokemon Rumble, and Pokemon BW all moved up. Almost all of Nintendo’s games have had increased sales this week.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Long-tailed sellers like that always shoot up the charts any time there’s a slowdown. It’s kind of fascinating to watch because whenever everything else is dead, those games just keep trucking on and have a chance to shine even more.

I want some of the things on this list~

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Why was Winnie the Pooh Translated, it was pretty nice as Kuma no Pooh-san ;D.

Uta no Prince Sama is still there, go Ittoki go. I imagine 3DS shall attain 3mln unit sales if it keeps a pace of 50K rest of year, heres hope that Ninty can find success and Iwatar can avoid that ejection seat by turning the system around.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Haha, wait and see what happens in November and December when the Marios and Monster Hunter hit. Ahhh, it’s going to be a good couple months of sales, between 3DS and the Vita launch… I can’t wait.

I don’t like the fact that Square has basically said, “Dragon Quest = Nintendo platforms”. I mean, when Nintendo’s on top of the world, sure they’ll localize ‘em for Square – look at Dragon Quest IX, or the DS remake trilogy. But when Nintendo consoles are dead in the water, there’s no way we’re going to get this. Reggie’s done a fantastic job of killing any momentum the Wii’s done. We’re not going to get this, we’re not going to get DQX. It’s a shame. This series was probably picking up traction and support here with DQIX….now it’s all gonna come to a screeching halt because we won’t get another Dragon Quest until ….who knows when?

Here’s hoping the spinoffs (Monster ~ Joker, Rocket Slime) will keep coming out here.

No offense but I don’t really see the logic in your comment. Let me give my two cents if you would please. Before Nintendo’s attempt to help publish Dragon Quest IX the Dragon Quest series has not sold all that well in the west. Helping to publish Quest IX was a gamble in of itself. The pay off really wasn’t there at the beginning. No one was sure how well Dragon Quest IX would sell.

The series just made it’s return in the west from being absent for about 3 years or so. And this is only counting side games. The main series has had a fair share of problems, after all we missed out on V and VI. Which isn’t so bad things considered. Lots of Japanese series at this time skipped around. Final Fantasy skipped many of it’s titles. Buuuutttt there is one really big difference here. Enix wasn’t skipping titles because they were too old or thought to be too hard for western gamers.

Nope Enix had to close down their US branch their sales were so poor. When they reopened they pushed VII. Anyways VII brought the series back but where they brought it back to was bad sales and pretty harsh criticism. VIII was yet another return. This time as SE they tried to push the game and it did only moderately well. Nothing too bad but SE really expected more. That’s the reason why you can find so many copies of VIII around for about $5. SE printed a crap load of the game thinking it would sell well.

So coming back into now Nintendo came along and took this risk (and yes Dragon Quest IX WAS A RISK) and helped to publish the series in the west. Nintendo took a very aggressive stance with IX with a big advertisement campaign paid for by money from their own pocket. And it paid off since Dragon Quest IX is the best selling game in the series for the west. It’s never sold this well before. Since then Nintendo has kept the ball rolling with VI, Monster:Joker 2, and Fortune Street which they themselves are actually gonna translate instead of SE. I can’t see them dropping Dragon Quest out of no where. Not when they have invested so much time, energy, and money into making a western audience.

    i want Dragon quest collection already; ;

  • http://twitter.com/ChaseBurr Chase Bonner

mannnn i wish they would bring over DQ Collection

  • Suicunesol

@ Vince Vasquez: Well, I certainly agree that we’re not going to get the Dragon Quest Collection. It’s just a collection of old, nostalgic games. It’s something made only for Japan, the country that appreciates DQ games.

DQX, on the other hand, is a different story. It’s probably going to be one of Wii U’s first major releases…

Dragon Quest sure is popular… even if we are talking about games that were released decades ago.
