The History of Sonic Hardcover Book Coming From Udon And Sega

By Ishaan . July 9, 2012 . 8:30am

Udon Entertainment are publishing a History of Sonic hardcover book in collaboration with Sega in North America. At 300 pages in length, the book covers every 2D and 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game produced in detail, and also goes over Sonic crossovers and cameo appearances in other games as well.

Also included in the book are features like an interview with Yuji Naka (see above) and character profiles of the series cast. You can grab the book off Amazon for $32.12, and Sega have shared a few preview pages to sample here.

Should I get a decen source of income again, I am so buying this for my SEGA-fanatic friend as a birthday-gift. Because this is just… this is just something any Sonic-fan would find delicious. Heck I find it delicious and I only played Sonic on others consoles as a kid!

  • tsk!
    another US-only/exclusive pre-order item!
come on! share it to the rest of the world!

    • Anime10121

It actually started out as a French only book, its been out in France for months.

  • AnimeRemix

Everyone here on Siliconera that pay attention to my posts should know I’ll be pre-ordering this when my birthday rolls around! My goodness! 300 pages of Hedgehog History!? MUST BUY!!!! Saw a video on Youtube of someone showing off the French version of the book, and man does it look like they go into details with the games. I was quite surprised to see the book even included other Sonic games that aren’t known to a lot of people (Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car anyone?)

Alright. I’ll stop now before I blast into a Sonic fanboy mood and have a long comment talking about my love for Sonic and how amazing this book is. Anyone that’s a Sonic fan should get this!

    • Anime10121

Although Im probably not as big a fan as you (I was WAY more of a Sonic kid than a Mario one, although Mario’s cool too), I share in your excitement, I’ve seen previews of the French version as well and this thing looks like a beast!

Preordered already a week or two ago.  Say what you will about Sonic, but the main games are still some pretty solid platformers.  There have only been 3 games in the entire series that I found lackluster, Sonic Adventure 1 (man those side characters:( ), Sonic Heroes, and Sonic 2006, other than those 3, I think Sonic’s had an extremely successful career.

I’ll be buying it mostly for the art, for only 30 bucks, ya cant go wrong. Now for some chilli dogs :P

Though it’s damn near unplayable to me now due to poor controls, I’d take SA over Unleashed. Those night stages…

      • AnimeRemix

I use to hate the night stages a lot, but after finding out that I can play my own music playing as the Werehog, I actually kinda find the night stages…enjoyable. I would still take SA1 over Unleashed in the long run, though.

        • Solomon_Kano

If only music was enough to save it for me lol.

      • Anime10121

Understandable, I like to make beleive that the night stages never existed.  Luckily I’ve beaten the game so now I can go back a play a good Sonic Unleashed any time I want, I play all the Sonic Stages and dont even have to think of “Were-hog” anymore:P

Sonic Adventure on the other hand, I cant make that game control better.  Its a good game, just a poorly made game.  The same can be said for Sonic 06, it had great level designs and the game (barring human on hedgehog romance, or should I say hedgehog on human romance :P) would have been better had it been designed better (better controls, better game engine, etc.)

        • Solomon_Kano

You know, all these years later and I still never gave 06 a try. I remember wanting to, but everything I heard about it made it seem like I’d die if I played it lol.

It’s a real pity that Adventure controls so poorly though. It was really enjoyable when I first played it, but now I can’t even touch it. I haven’t played SA2 in years, I wonder if the controls in that game aged as poorly?

          • Anime10121

Regardless of what people say about Sonic 06 (people act like itll give you AIDS just by playing it), it was just another Sonic game that controlled badly.  It actually had some really good ideas going for it, but they just couldnt implement them right.

Its controls were beyond clunky (I mean after the lock on attack jump thing, there is a long pause before you can move again), but if they hadn’t shipped the game out before they actually finished it, I think it would have been just as liked as the Adventure series.  They had good ideas, they just didnt get them to work properly.

SA2 has a bad camera, but the thing that makes it a little easier to bear is that its levels weren’t as wide as SA1’s, they were much more linear, and I think it benefited tremendously from its linearity alone.

          • Solomon_Kano

Hm. I might have to check it out one of these days. Hopefully, Sega will put SA2 up on PSN so I can get back to that too.

Have I introduced you all to my adorable prickly thing, SAnic the HAAAdgehog?

    Original character. Do not steal!

As a Sega ultimate fanboy here.^^……… I approve this here.^^ Even if now many of Sonic fans has been unpleasedable, i am still very happy with all the new coming Sonic game here.^^

At least they did try to innovate on 3D section there and add more feature into the 2D Sonic.^^
