Time Travelers On PSP Sold Less Than Vita And 3DS Versions

By Ishaan . July 28, 2012 . 1:30pm

Time Travelers was released on the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in Japan two weeks ago. The 3DS version sold 9,054 copies while the PlayStation Vita version sold 9,332 copies. The PSP version, which was supposed to come out that same week, was delayed to a week later.

A week later, the PSP version was released, but was nowhere to be found in the top-20 software sales chart. What happened? A quick look at Media Create’s top-50 software sales chart for the week tells the story.

Time Travelers on PSP debuted at the #41 spot on the sales chart the week it was released. By that time, the Nintendo 3DS version was at the #40 spot, while the Vita version was at the #38 spot. So, the PSP version sold less at launch than both the 3DS and Vita versions did in their second week.

In other news, Konami’s Power Pro Baseball games saw a steep decline from last year. Here’s a comparison  of how this year’s games did compared to last year’s during launch week:

Power Pro Baseball 2011 (PS3) – 117,759

Power Pro Baseball 2012 (PS3) – 62,740

Power Pro Baseball 2011 (PSP) – 73,247

Power Pro Baseball 2012 (PSP) – 28,142

Power Pro Baseball 2012 (PSV) – 16,837

Media Create speculate that this could be because fans were waiting for the “Definitive” version of the game that follows the regular releases. They also say it could be due to low awareness of the game, owing to fewer TV commercials.

I could make a Vita joke, but that’s been done several times on larger/lesser sites.

I’m not too surprised by this news.  No, I’m happy actually.  This game needs the exposure and Level-5 could always use more money.

    • Kevadu

Um…what?  Did you read the article?  I don’t understand how your statement follows from anything in it…

    • ZEROthefirst

Your comment here just lost me.

    • Not catching your drift, bud.

    • Thought I’d be fitting to post this:

    • What’s so funny about the Vita??

    • JazzyMan123

Would you kindly enlighten us on what you mean by your comment?

    • Yamaneko22

And that’s exactly what happens when you post a comment without reading the article…

    • What?

    • JustaGenericUser

       What you say!

(Everyone else was doing it, thought I’d join in for no reason.)

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      ……I think i just lost you there.T_T

  • Uhm, what definitive version?

    •  There is a second version of the baseball game that comes out with updated rosters and sometimes some other little upgrades.  So basically, not only do you possibly get a buggy version, you don’t get the latest rosters unless you buy a SECOND version of the game.

When i learned this, i basically just stopped buying it period.

      •  Oh crap. I thought that was about Time Travelers not the baseball game.

  • Bring it to the US, we will buy it.

    • If by “we” you mean a tiny percentage of people, then yeah.

This game is pretty niche and relatively unheard of in the States, so think about it. If the game’s doing this badly in its home country, odds are it’ll do even worse over here.

      • I’m not saying that it’ll do well in other markets, but performance in the JP market actually isn’t that great of an indicator of performance in other markets.  Some products do well in Japan but flop everywhere else, others don’t do so well in Japan but see at least some success elsewhere.

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I make 2! – I’ll buy it…such a market for these games. Whether they are niche or not, if they were marketed correctly, I believe they could be successful.

      • Any game with proper marketing can do good in sales. But what publisher would even consider spending the time and money on a game that can’t even break 30k across all of its platforms, let alone pick it up for localization?

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I would love it Atlus or Nis America could pick it up…probably offer some type of “special” edition…and as for localization…no voice actors required, just subtitles.

I know money would have to go into it, however, if Catherine could do well for that style of game here with its Marketing, a lot of games could.

It would just have to be done right.

          • JazzyMan123

That’s still expensive, especially regarding the VA part since any localization company are bound to run into licensing issues.

    • Umm…. Positive Thinking!!!

  • Kamion

That’s really too bad because I just got my 3DS version and the game is really interesting.

It’s also very import friendly with all those furigana.

    • Guest

It should have an English option imo.

I remember there was a Japanese PS1 visual novel that was in English…”Dark something…forget the name”

  • Nitraion

I can only sad… it’s like they released it in wrong Time and wrong moment…

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

So imo, this is not good.

With sales like this I don’t want them to stop it from localizing it….

    • JazzyMan123

Companies are in it for the profit, if they don’t see any potential profit in this game, they won’t see it worth bringing over. Not to mention this game being part of a genre that is virtually dead anywhere that isn’t Japan.

So just save yourself any hopeless waiting and just import this game if you have one the three platforms that it is on.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

So then do I wait for a fan translation? I am learning Japanese, however, am not at the right point to fully enjoy a game yet.

        • JazzyMan123

There could be a fan translation for the PSP version, but I dunno. Still, keep at that Japanese.

  • Aoshi00

My Vita ver just shipped, I hope the perfect score from Famitsu was warranted (I haven’t tried the DS demo yet)..  Otherwise this would hit bargain bin right after release like Ni no Kuni DS or Archaic Sealed Heat..  felt silly for paying full price when it got slashed in half or more so soon.

    • Speedo Redempteur

maybe releasing a vita or psp demo would have helped ???

  • Alphabet Soup

NOOOOOO!  You can do it, come on Time Travelers!! T_T

  • FStubbs

Looks like it’s Aksys or bust for Time Travelers, and DD only

  • LynxAmali

Got my copy mid-last week from my hobby shop where I get all my imported goodies.

    I’m in love.

Haven’t finished it yet but everything is so awesome so it’s sorta sad to see it do poorly. Was really hoping it would sell well enough so that could make it into a possible series because a lot of the ideas are really interesting, both from the player interaction and the characters and plot.

Shindou. Best character in anything I’ve played in recent memory.

  • This better get localized. My heart can’t take it after the MML3 cancellation.

    • JazzyMan123

      Doubt it.

  • Well, at least the [Time Travellers] combined sales make for a better overall game sales figure. But it’s still disappointing, I wished the game would be a tad more sucessful than it was.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    usa? usA!?

  • Doesnt surprise me, danganrompa 2, this, agarest senki, digimon, re-digitalize, some other otome games like always, the new class of heroes, umm what else…, nayuta too i think, were all released in these 2 weeks, too many games for psp lol

  • Good this is the way it should be….the psp has gone on for what seems like forever…of course everyone else will disagree because they are die hard psp fans that represent a minority of consumers…but this is good news. The vita is finally getting the attention is deserves. You guys didn’t surely assume the psp could last forever did you!? I mean the Vita is the successor to the psp of course sooner or later the psp will be non existent, whether you like it or not!

  • Elvick

    Go Vita! :D
