Persona 4: Arena Sold Through 90% Of Its Shipment In A Week

By Ishaan . August 3, 2012 . 11:00am

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan last Saturday, and the game sold 407,503 copies over the weekend. Sales tracker, Media Create, say that this was 41.56% of the game’s initial shipment.

That number may seem low, but Nintendo likely shipped excess copies of the game in preparation for upcoming strong demand. Japan’s Obon festival and summer break are both coming up, and will boost sales of the title.

Meanwhile, as we reported earlier in the week, Persona 4: Arena’s launch outsold several other fighting games on the PlayStation 3 in Japan. The PS3 version of the game sold 128,485 copies in its opening week, while the Xbox 360 version sold 9,801 copies.

Media Create say that’s over a 90% sell-through on both platforms. Congratulations, Index/Atlus and Arc System Works.

I get the feeling this isn’t the last we’re going to see of Persona fighting games…

    • Onizuka Gio Hikari

I really hope not I love persona, it would be great if they made a persona fighter with everyone in it

      • haku67

not just persona what about Vincent climbing boxes and pushing them lol. XD

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

It depends. If it does well in the fighting scene and even gets an official spot at EVO, it may not be. Elsewise, it probably will.

      • cj_iwakura

It’s already picking up mad hype in the FGC scene, last I checked.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yep, it really has. Hopefully it keeps its momentum.

        • ForteWily

I would not call it, “Mad hype”, but there is an interest in the usual corners of the FGC… namely NorCal, Asia (Singapore, most of Japan, some of Korea). The thing is, most are not really that interested and I don’t see that as much of an issue since I see P4A attracting a crowd that is not familiar with the usual FGC framework at all. And I am also of the opinion that IF P4A is popular on those merits, the FGC will not be prepared to handle that what so ever.

I dont see when or how they would be able to make another one considering this one seems to build off of the popularity of Persona 4. I guess one on Persona 3 could be made with its focus, but that wouldn’t make much sense.

Getting so stoked about this game. Tuesday can’t come fast enough!

  • Tales_of_Master

Great news. Now Atlus, give me my SMT fighter :D

    • haku67

http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=107416 I buy that day one!

  • RmanX1000

Hype for the game guaranteed 1% would be sold…
The ‘Persona’ name guaranteed another 1% would be sold…
And Yu’s swag covered the rest.

  • Carlos Daniel Flores Loreto

Can’t wait for this. Im such a whore for Arc System Works. They could release a new GGear with only Potemkin and Slayer playable, making all other charas DLC, and I would still buy it.

    • andref

Wouldn’t that technically be like playing a fighting game version of Guilty Gear Overture 2 though you couldn’t have any of the other guilty gear characters likenesses in the game except for Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske well and maybe Dizzy mentioned though I didn’t finish the game so I can’t say if she was shown on screen

  • AnimeRemix

Pre-ordered just in time yesterday at GameStop. Good to see news like this over the news I got from the GameStop worker yesterday that said they weren’t going to get many copies.

Anyways, Tuesday HYPE just can’t come fast enough!!!!

    • haku67

lol I’m heading out today to see if I can pre order. I’m too lazy + I have tag 2 preordered as well XD

  • MrKappa

Not that impressive when lined up against Mario. The game almost hit half a million sold and that is only about 40%?
Meanwhile Persona is just a tad about 100k and that is 90%. Either way I don’t see it doing as well in NA and EU, for some reason I feel it will be just like Dragon’s Dogma where it sold great in Japan but tanked everywhere else.

With all that said I will be the first person in Gamestop… sans the employees.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well it is very impresive there for p4 considering the game is more or less spin off there from a different genre too.

And this game also does well compared to other fighting game there so, it is a very good thing there.

    • Sakurazaki

It’s a bit difficult to compare games from two different genres which also have different numbers to meet.

    • CasualGamer

It’s not really fair to compare a mature niche title like Persona with a mainstream family-friendly title like Mario. Not to mention the amount of advertisements that a giant company like Nintendo could put out.
I will actually be surprised if this game doesn’t do well in NA. Of course it won’t be anywhere near EA or Activision’s titles. But it will do well for a niche title.

  • Shadowman

Of course! It’s Persona 4 the most awesome game ever made.

  • Brimfyre

Looking forward to that Rise DLC.

Or the sequel: Shin Megami Tensei Person 4 Arena Guilty Punishment Trigger Climax Neo

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Awwww yeah! ATLUS has done it again! Long live Persona! =^_^=

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Lol at the image. Yu is going super jedi on Chie. “Y U no remember our dates from last year?!”

  • Corey Letcher

impressive on P4′s part, also woot my copy was just shipped

  • protofox

wait..this isnt out in america yet is it? not till the 7th…but i had a friend playing this on xbox live yesterday( the 3rd)  so..this game is either not region blocked…hacked xbox..or a early copy he got…not fair. not fair at all -crys-

    • Daru Titor

I did see it on store shelves Friday in Mississauga, Ontario.
      Specifically, Square One’s Walmart.

It was the PS3 version only though
