Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Won’t Let You Play On The Wii U GamePad Screen

By Ishaan . October 26, 2012 . 12:00pm

Ever since its release in Japan last year, Capcom have been supporting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate with downloadable high-rank quests to keep giving players more things to do. There’s quite the list of them.

We got in touch with Capcom USA to ask if download quests will be made available for the western release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as well, and the good news is that they will.

We also asked if the Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate would support the option to play the game on the Wii U GamePad’s screen, rather than the television, and unfortunately, it will not. The Wii U version does, however, allow you to rearrange your UI on the GamePad, just like the bottom screen in the Nintendo 3DS version. You can watch a demonstration of this here.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be released in the U.S. and Europe in March 2013. Both versions will support cross-play and cross-saving. The Wii U version will also allow for online multiplayer.

    What Fockery is this?!

    • SpecDotSign

Don’t be surprised. This is Capcom we’re talking about here. They upresed the game and ported it to the WiiU.

      • ronin4life

The lighting and Shadows are improved over the 3ds version(the version I believe you are saying was upresed into the wiiu one)
But yeah, this is capcom making as simple of a port as possible. And/or they wanted to make potential off-screen players go for the 3ds version if they wanted to play without a tv.

  • ronin4life

Sooo… no same system multiplayer after all?

It would have been cool if two people could play on wiiu while playing locally with two other 3ds players… oh well.

  • Eriol

Well that’s a shame about no lower pad play, but I would have liked it someone asked about the Event download quests. If they are available (which I assume they are since they’re downloadable quests), what will happen with the bonus weapons and armor? Such as the JoJo Event hammer, will it get reskins a la Pirate J/Sinister Saint or will it be removed like in Unite? I don’t mind reskins but I’ll be sad if they pull another Unite.
Talking about events, also extra stuff like the Stand masks for Cha-Cha/Kayamba would’ve been nice to know.

Aw… So I can’t play this all the time at my house ESPECIALLY when I am on the toilet?

  • malek86

I thought Gamepad screen playing was something of a mandatory feature, but I guess not…

This is a problem. I was interested in the Wii U mainly for this feature, so now I’ll need to check when I buy a game, if it supports it or not. I thought it would have been integrated in every game, but I guess I was too hopeful ._.

Or maybe, if I’m lucky, this is just an exception.

  • Areuto

isn’t that why there’s one for the 3ds also?

Don’t expect a port of a 3DS game to use all the home console features. Remember Portable 3rd HD on PS3 still use Ad Hoc Party instead of PSN online network for online multiplayer. The games uses the Wii U Gamepad the same way it uses the 3DS bottom screen.  As a area for maps, items, health bar etc etc. After watching the video where you can have your gameplay  TV screen completely naked. I fell deeper in love with this game. Nothing in your way just your hunter, the monster, and the background all in HD.

  • konsama

Wouldn’t that kill the purpose of transferring to Wii U? I mean if you’re not playing on the big TV you can just play on 3DS. Having it on the pad thing would be kind of pointless.

  • ronin4life

Also, does this mean the Keroro mask will be in the Western version as well?? OoO|

@ronin4life:disqus @twitter-120015482:disqus I wouldn’t get my hopes up for licensed content like the Jojo weapons and stuff making it over, at least not without licensing complications having to be dealt with along the way. We’ll have a chance to talk more with Capcom about the game in the future, so let’s wait and see how it pans out.

      • mark zeus lee

It’ll probably turn into like Tenebra and Sinister saints here

      • Eriol

If you do get a chance, I’d appreciate it if you inquired about it! I mean, the licensed stuff just got reskinned to generic stuff in Tri’s western release (My example was One Piece’s event gear), for example, so if they did the same for TriU I will be happy.

I’ll keep that in mind, and if plans for future coverage pan out, we’ll try to include that question. :)

There goes my dream of playing MH in my toilet. T_T

    • Showmeyomoves

That’s what the 3DS version is for: Toilet play!

      • NEKO WORKING

        3ds suck :P

It would be better you delete your comment there as Siliconera does not tolerate system fanboying or slandering here.

Not supporting Off-TV play is understandable. If you have the 3DS version you can just transfer your saves and play it there.

    • http://blog.ceddychen.com/ ctk974

What if you share your TV and don’t have the 3DS version?

      • XypherCode

        I wouldn’t have thought I’d reply to a month old post. :))

Anyway I did say if. And considering the Wii U version has assests from the 3DS version, techinically it’s quite difficult to implement Off-TV play. They must be at least equal in functionality. Unless if you can stream the GamePad screen to the TV and of course that doesn’t have touch input. Or if they can remove the GamePad screen functionality entirely then they can just stream the main screen to the GamePad. But who knows? Let’s just wait and see what happens. There are still 3-4 months and the game can change dramatically by then.

    ouchi!

  • Makkiez

Sad to hear that you can’t use the Display on the gamepad to play on it still is not all that big of an issue. However the game itself looks great and really looking forward to it. Any idea of the downloadable quests will also be available for Europe? Would be sad if whe don’t get those?
