<< Last week’s software sales chart

Namco Bandai released Tales of Xillia 2 in Japan last week, and the role-playing game debuted at the #1 spot on the software sales chart with 364,439 copies sold.

That’s quite a bit less than the original Tales of Xillia, which sold 525,605 copies in its first week, but something to keep in mind is that Tales of Xillia was heavily promoted as a 15th anniversary celebration of the series. In comparison, Xillia 2 isn’t quite as “special”.

Earlier in the week, Namco Bandai revealed that they hope to sell 650,000 copies of Xillia 2 by the end of their ongoing fiscal year.

Meanwhile, another popular RPG, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, is proving to be rather resilient. Bravely Default stuck on in the top-10 at #6, with another 20,454 copies sold, bringing its total sales to 234,413.

Finally, a new Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Nintendo 3DS XL bundle and the release of a black 3DS XL model gave the Nintendo 3DS a boost for the week, and brought Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate back into the top-20. Last week, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate wasn’t even in the top-50. A budget re-release of the game is scheduled to go on sale later this year as well.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

i hope they do reach 650k copies :o

    • By selling half in its first week shows that the game is on track to do so. Saying that, next week sales will show if it will reach that goal before then or not.

    • It has already sold more than half of the 650K desired copies, so yeah, I guess it will :)

  • AkuLord3

half way there…happy to see it doing pretty well

  • Leon_Tekashi

Keep it up Tales of Xilia 2!

  • While showing resilience, could the slowdown in sales be down to:
    1) Being unable to quickly replenish the stock of physical copies.
    2) The consumers deciding to pick up the digital version due to reason no. 1.

Glad to see Xillia 2 on course to reaching the goal set out for it.

  • Ladius

Xillia 2’s debut is wonderful, aside from Xillia it’s still the best first week for a Tales game in the last six years, not to mention it’s on par with the first weeks of PS2 motherships such as Rebirth and Abyss and higher than Legendia and Destiny Remake.

Let’s hope its LTD manages to be just as impressive, while Tales games tend to be front-loaded Xillia sold roughly 150k copies after its first week (even if this number is probably outdated by now), and I can see Xillia 2 meeting Namco’s distribution goal at the end of this fiscal year.

    • malek86

I think it will help when we know the sell-through ratio. If it’s lower than 60%, it might be a problem as it would denote a lower interest in the game than usual. But I think it will be more around 75%.

    i c wut u did thur

  • GreekGod88

We need to spam countless random youtube vids with
“Tales of Xillia is coming 2013 for Ps3 – amazing Jrpg- ” comments
So more people in US and EU will buy them xD

    • Randy Marsh

You realize that will cause people to flag your comment as spam and your comment will be ignored.

    • CirnoLakes

Only if you want people to start to hate it.

    • Arrei

No, no, a thousand times no.

Spamming is little more than a surefire way to get people to hate whatever you’re shilling.

    • M’iau M’iaut

I think you’ll find that such things are about the farthest removed from what the community here would do. We love our hobby, but that also means we don’t wish to see bad things happen to it.

Folks outside our niche think we are crazy enough, we don’t need to also prove we are childish.

  • thumbs up for rpgs

  • Setsuna ♥

Half way to the desired goal of 650k in one week ~ I hope it makes it to its goal soon, maybe it’ll influence how much sooner it comes to the US after Xillia 1

    • LightZero

It won’t. Xillia 1 sales will determine its fate. Tales always sell decently well in Japan. It never influence it chances. If it did we would had gotten the Destiny Remake. The Tales series sells like crap in the west. With the exception of Symphonia, Symphonia 2, and Vesperia none of them even come close to breaking 100K.

  • Demerson

Pfft, who cares about Xillia 2?  Where the hell did Project X Zone go?

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Still living on the big 30 there.^_^

    • Ethan_Twain

Project X Zone was a crossover project – that means it appeals really well to fans, but not really so much to any wider audience.  It’s not at all a surprise that Project X Zone sold to it’s audience all at once and then plummeted off the top 20.  That was always going to be it’s fate.

  • Depending on how much of a boost it gets from Animal Crossing and other upcoming games, 3DS could outsell the PS3’s lifetime sales by the end of November. If it doesn’t manage it by then, it most certainly will in December. That’s a pretty big deal.

    • Considering its the portable that came after the best seller DS, not that much of a deal, just the inevitable, obvious outcome.

    • Ethan_Twain

You’re just talking about domestic Japanese sales, right?

Also:  I’m always interested to see the weekly Japanese charts on Siliconera, and I would like to start checking weekly charts for North America and Europe too.  Does Media Create cover those territories?

      • Yup, just domestic Japanese sales. And unfortunately, no, Media Create only covers Japan. The NPD Group sends out monthly top-ten charts for the U.S. (which we cover every month) but don’t provide numbers. And Europe is just a big mess, since different firms track different countries over there, but again, none of them provide numbers.

    • Tails the Foxhound

What do you think the odds are of the 3DSXL overtaking the Vita LTD this year? I’ve been lurking on Gaf again and people there think it’ll happen next year with DQVII and MH4, but I think Animal Crossing’s amazing sell through might make it happen sooner.

Also, the 3DS passing PS3 in JPN LTD doesn’t shock me, they love their handhelds over there. If the 3DS was already nearing the Wii’s JPN LTD, now THAT would be a story (though I’m thinking that will happen at about this time next year).

  • Göran Isacson

Good on Xillia 2 so far, now to hope it’s got legs… much like I hope Okami HD has legs that will move it beyond just 100k sold. Ammy deserves so much more than that.

So is Bravely Default’s numbers still good? Game definitely looks like it will have some legs to stand on, and Christmas season will probably boost it too, but it’s overall sales are still less than Xillia 2’s sales on the first week… or is that an unfair comparison to make, perhaps? Maybe I should be thinking less of this in terms of “Square RPG versus Namco rpg”, and more like “portable versus console”?

Sad to see Project X Zone out of bounds already, but I guess that’s what one can expect from niche titles. I just hope it sold enough to make some money back :(

    • Bravely Default is definitely doing very well for what it is—a brand new IP. In fact, it might be the highest-selling debut a new Square Enix IP has had in a few years. It’s certainly higher than TWEWY. Considering that it’s well on its way to 300k (and possibly even beyond that), I would call it a success. :)

The comparison to Tales isn’t quite applicable in this case, because Tales has been around for many years now, and has been heavily promoted many times over in different forms, and through different media. Bravely Default didn’t have any of that going for it.

  • MrTyrant

Oh god Vita! 3ds in total sell like 90K D: about games, good for Xillia 2. Hope we get that soon too.

  • BD still in the top 10!

keep it up, little game that could!~

  • s07195

There seems to be a good number of great games on the chart, and Run for Money seems to be falling in terms of sales… though staying within the Top 20 for so long should mean SOMETHING.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Pro Evo exist on all the chart lol.^_^

and seeing how Run for Money is still tanking, 300k for Bamco is not so far fetched lol.^_^

  • Ethan_Twain

Hang on, but Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate only ran up 8,000 units this week.  So assuming just about all of those came from the bundle, that’s still only an 8,000 unit bump it contributed to the 3DS hardware sales.  Considering the total 3DS sales are right around 94,000 units, that bump is hardly significant.  You’ve been doing this for a while Ishaan, would a new color system cause sales to spike enough to account for the rest of this huge number?

It’s just a very curious week, with stratospheric hardware sales but nothing new in the top ten software sellers.  Or is it late enough in the year that the holiday season could be driving sales?  I don’t know what the holiday shopping trends are in Japan, but in the US I know that the last two months of the year are considered the holiday season and I’ve been hearing holiday music in stores for weeks now.

    • Yep, that sounds about right.

The 8,000 copies of Monster Hunter sold this week are all from the bundle. The 3DS XL has been stable around the 37/38k mark for the past few weeks, so let’s say 38k + 8k (MH3U) = 46k.

Then another 18-20k from the black XL,and that brings us to approximately 64k.
Black’s a popular colour, and this is the first time that the XL is being made available in that colour scheme, so yes, very conceivable that it sold that much. :)

      • xavier axol

hey ishaan, how is it that you only show the handheld sales number? what ever happen to the consoles number? are the sales really dead in japan?

        • We’re only tracking the new generation of hardware, so 3DS, Vita and soon Wii U. When PS4 or X720 or whatever are released, we’ll track those, too. Sort of a clean slate. If you want to check out weekly hardware sales for the other systems (PS3, Wii, 360, PSP) you can click on the 4Gamer link at the bottom, and scroll down to the end of their report.

  • komiko12

almost 5K Vitas sold in a week?

    Question though.
Did 3DS sales also sucked this bad before it became better?

    • Elvick

I don’t think it was this bad.

    • No, the lowest 3DS sales got was the week that Nintendo announced that they were slashing the price in a few days. At that point, it got somewhere around the 4k mark if I recall correctly, but otherwise, no, it was nowhere near this bad. Not even the PS3, which got off to an absolutely awful start six years ago, ever dropped this low.

      • komiko12

I see, people would be holding off buying a 3DS if they know it will have a price drop a few days after.

Poor Vita. It’s like the companies DO want to do something for it but they are not willing to take a gamble. Each of them are waiting for someone else to make the first move because they don’t want to it themselves.

  • Kristina Wright

Well looks like NB will be happy with the sales of Xillia 2 so far. They have exceeded over half of what they hope to sell. I’m sure they’ll meet their goal. :)

  • Tianyu Wei

The reason Bravely Default did well on 3DS is because well.. it’s one of the best jRPG by default on the system… I mean if you are the only game there you got no competition… can’t say the same for other systems… ToX 2 is suffering the same thing as FFXIII-2, both games trumps the original but the bad taste in the original hindered the sales of the second…
