Final Fantasy XIV Comes To An End In A Grand Finale

By Ishaan . November 11, 2012 . 10:30am

After a short but troubled life, Square Enix MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, is being taken offline. In honour of the occasion and the game, Square Enix released an “End of an Era” cinematic trailer that shows the Eorzean Alliance taking a last stand against the Garlean Empire:

Square Enix aren’t killing Final Fantasy XIV, though—they’re rebooting it as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which will be a complete ground-up overhaul that addresses many of the game’s issues.

A Realm Reborn is currently in alpha-testing, and Square have said they’ll bring Final Fantasy XIV back online for players that want to play it until A Realm Reborn launches. You can find videos showing off A Realm Reborn below:

So, let me get this straight. A Realm Reborn comes to be because Bahamut shows up and obliterates everything? AWESOME.

    • Nyandroid

Bahamut has achieved what many villains could not. Destroyed the world so that it could be reborn.

  • Carocaro4

never played the first version but this was just kinda awesome. just saying…

  • Gaara D.Dragon

that will make Michael Bay himself shed a tear in awe

  • XIV was released as a world f-all to do so the only solution is to destroy it so can be “reborn” as a better world.

  • Godmars

Never understood if the original was the cock-up it was why wasn’t it just shut down.

    • MrRobbyM

Because this is Square Enix we’re talking about here.

    • revenent hell

stuborn people dont want to admit a failure?
I was pretty much thinking the same thing myself…All the money and effort put in to it for so long why not just shut it down and begin from the ground up to begin with

      • Trotmeister

They have openly admitted FFXIV was a failure back in the end of 2010. However, they kept the game going for the sake of the players. Near the end, it actually became a semi-decent MMO. The world was bland and the interface was horrible, but hey, that’s why they’re remaking it.

      • Godmars

Just money you mean. Which is another thing: how during the production process was the original lead dev allowed to get away with the purposely lazy job he did? Not building on FF11. Copy and pasting terrain in a painfully obvious fashion. As they made to release it they had to have know what they did and didn’t have and yet it was released regardless.

If Square is that blind, that oblivious, to their own work they should have questioned how they’ve been doing everything and yet they don’t seem to have realized anything.

        • Locklear93

How was the original producer allowed to get away with things? I’ll admit this is an unsubstantiated opinion, but my guess would be an attitude that if they put “Final Fantasy” on it, it would be guaranteed to at least make a profit.  FF XI was never a hugely popular affair, but it did well enough for itself.  I suspect the opinion was that as long as “Final Fantasy” was on the box, they expected the same for XIV.

          • Didn’t SE already come out and say that FFXI has been the most profitable Final Fantasy to date? I played that game for 6 years. So $14 a month for 6 years is around $1,008 (not including 2 mules I had and expansions bought). I’m estimating that the player base across all servers hovers around 40,000 -50,000 at this point (Just an estimate keep in mind). So even without WoW numbers of users, this is a nice profit. How many people can say they have spent $1000+ on a Final Fantasy title in a span of 6 years? So even if it isn’t as popular as the single player games, it is a success.

          • Godmars

Which only lends to the “stick the FF name on it”. They weren’t expecting millions, only tens of thousands, but what did sell would be be bought by “fans” who’d only care about name rather than quality. That despite expense such low quality was delivered that the only thing people could do about FF14 was complain. And even still, though the game wasn’t on par to FF11, some fans still stood up for it meaning that sadly the mentality that went into the original game wasn’t all that wrong.

My issue as someone who hasn’t played either is that similar complaints were said about FF13 – and Square has basically stood by the “decisions” of that game. Really had no point to do otherwise since they already had our money, but have since gone on to “fix” things with two sequels banking on the FF name. And some people are defending them.

          • Locklear93

That’s pretty much what I said.

“So even if it isn’t as popular as the single player games, it is a success.”
“FF XI was never a hugely popular affair, but it did well enough for itself.”

Your statement, my statement.  As for it being the most profitable, it’d almost have to be, after being up and running for… what, ten years now?  Even if the margin isn’t huge, subscription fees over that many years add up.  My point was that SE felt confident that XIV would do the same for them, just because it was labeled Final Fantasy, and that didn’t pan out.

          •  In reply to your reply to my comment below (since I cant reply on it, too many replies!).

            So it is! My bad.

          • Godmars

“My point was that SE felt confident that XIV would do the same for them,
just because it was labeled Final Fantasy, and that didn’t pan out.”

Or rather early adapters to the game raised a stink forcing Square into damage control mode because people were abandoning it.

It could have just as easily been accepted as it was, acquired a small but dedicated paying user base with the odd newcomer now and then.

In many ways we’re just as much to blame for the shape Square is in as Square themselves.

          • Locklear93

I’m not at all convinced, with FFXIV’s reception, that its “small but dedicated” userbase would’ve been enough to ever make the game turn even a small profit.  And I REALLY can’t agree that anyone but Square is to blame.

    • Because you still need to provide for the players that bought the game and want to keep playing the product they spent money on.

      • Godmars

Still given the degree of admission of failure – in that case anyway – you’d think they’d refund or credit people who bought the game.

        • Robert Leonardi

i heard that those who bought the old XIV will get free upgrade to realm reborn

          • Luna Kazemaru

We do everyone who played the old XIV up to the last character save gets a free upgrade.

        • Wiccan1109

There was like 8 months or so free to play when they sort of owned up to how badly it was sucking, and then a discount period. People who played during a certain period also got a special membership status that offers discount subscription prices, bonus features and free extra characters for your account in ARR. Anyone who has an account will also be able to upgrade to the new client for free. Most long term players seem fairly happy with that.

          • WE get to be int he Credits in ARR thank’s to “Legacy Status” with a Exclusive Chocobo. I really cant complain>Since beta.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Because they asked us players would they like the game shut down we said no. So they let if live alittle longer then planned.

    • Draparde

After their apology i figure them fixing the game to a pretty fun state, was sort of “proving” themselves to the player base that it could be done but that they where going to take it a step farther.

They could have simply shut it down and remade it, but not only would there not have been the awesome one-time story of 1.0, it was also a chance for them to attempt to get a fanbase (which worked as they fixed the game)

  • ali mohammed

    I have a question please ?
Does the PS3 version have a monthly fees ?
I dont want to waste a lot of money on it

    • pjca

Yes, you have to pay to play online too…

      :CBut it worth it :)

      • ali mohammed

Do you know how much i have to pay ?
And thank yu very much :D

        • probably the same amount as the PC version.

          • ali mohammed

Hmmm , how much is the PC version ?

          • Robert Leonardi

            12.99 dollahs

  • Solomon_Kano

Heaven help us, that was awesome. Makes me look forward to A Realm Reborn even more, but it also makes me wish I could’ve been there for the end of 1.0. Best CG Squenix has put out since FF XII, and above anything that was in FF XII. Action, great music, an emotional story — all in just 6 minutes.

I really can’t wait to give A Realm Reborn a go once it hits PS3.

  • *sigh* Okay, okay. I have to keep this G rated. *thinks*

Um.. I like… Cat women. There! I said it!

    • Godmars

  • Willi Meyhoff

now THIS is what I call a cinematic. damn awesome!

  • Trotmeister

The trailer is awesome, but the event itself was a disgrace. All the players were supposed to gather in a certain place to fight incoming imperial forces. However, servers couldn’t handle it and began to crash even before the event started!

Devs tried to ease the load by imposing login restriction on some of the players, but it didn’t help at all. It was supposed to be an epic 2 hour long battle, however, the only epic thing about it was the amount of frustration players have experienced.

    • I watched this unfold and yes, it was just as bad if not worse than you described it.

    • Göran Isacson

Oh, that just HURTS to hear. I have no affiliation or stake in FF14, but hearing that something so hyped, and which had such a slick damn cut-scene end and felt so dramatic was handled so poorly was just… well! Guess that goes to show that the modern era and it’s MMO’s aren’t like Square-Enixs forte. You can direct a cut-scene to be as pretty as you like, but directing a consistent world with several players in it acting on their own behalf? Nnnnot so easy.

  • One of the best trailers ever. The overall feel and emotion was perfect. Square-Enix you have amazed me yet again =^_^=

  • Trailer is epic and moving, but I stayed up till 2 in the morning watching a live stream expecting something crazy to happen in game.  Just spawned a couple high level enemies, kicked the players, and gave them this trailer.  Alright.

  • MagiusNecros

    Bahamut for best villain ever.

    • Godmars

       Thought he was a summons?

      Best summons ever, but still.

      • Robert Leonardi

in old ffs, he’s a summon, in this one he’s a destroyer of worlds, that’s why he never appeared (just mentioned) in FFXIV story quests

        • Godmars

In this one instance – adventure – or in the lore of the entire world of FF11 – FF14?
If the latter its a bit lame, considering that the world of FF14 was “doomed” shortly after it was released.

          • Robert Leonardi

the only instance where bahamut is a destroyer is only on FFXIV, bahamut in FFXI only plays the role of wyrmking (and one of the strongest bosses in game at that).

and FFXI and FFXIV are two different worlds, so their lore don’t intertwine with each other

and yes, Eorzea was doomed before you start the game, because one of its moons called dalamud (the gigantic meteor in the video that contained Bahamut) was prophesied to fall upon the world and after it went up close to the world, SE closed the servers and released the video “End of an Era”

  • Damn, did you see the prices at EBGames for Final Fantasy XIV? $64.99 D: That is BRAND new games with taxes basically… I wish i had this BEFORE the update :/… my loss is their gain I guess.

    • Robert Leonardi

that’s the old FFXIV price, the realm reborn is $29.99

      • Well then, why would they confuse people like that? :/ Plus, isn’t the release of Realm Reborn out today?

        • Robert Leonardi

it was not meant to confuse people, it was a game that’s closing down, and i kinda understand your confusion, i was confused too when i saw that price for standard edition on amazon.

no, not today, today is just the day where FFXIV is closed down (or destroyed by bahamut), and there’s no set release date just yet, but amazon speculates that it will be released at december 31st of 2012

          • Ah, I see, thanks for informing me. I been reading around for the past few week and I kept reading that it was going to be released on the 11th.

Haha, that is why they release this trailer for the “reborn” feel. That definitely got my hyped no doubt. EBGames speculates it as well. There is still the monthly fee right? Do you know what the rate is? I remembered it being either $9.99 or $12.99 (US/CAD)

          • IT’s 14.99 For stander players. Legacy players(who paid over 3 months on current version $9.99) so yeah ^-^.

          • That definitely isn’t right, as beta test is scheduled to start end of January/beginning of February.

          • That definitely isn’t right, as beta test is scheduled to start end of January/beginning of February.

          • Robert Leonardi

like i said, amazon speculation (which is rarely true, and now its stated for december 31st 2013 lol)

  • ZeroWalker

Man best trailer so I seen for a game in a long time the feel and the emotions so good it brought tears to my eyes. I Know I badly wanna go back and try out the Reborn and I know I will but my only problem is. Im spoiled with the combat system in Tera online and Raider Z online and I have not seen how the new combat system will be like but I hope it is one I will like even after the monster hunter like combat system Tera and Raider Z has.

    • Robert Leonardi

what tera and raiderz lack is good story/plotline. What FF mmo usually advertises is its great storyline, that was how it was back then on FFXI, combatwise, idk, from vids it looks like it won’t be MH style.

      /watch?v=LM6bi4RP25o <- (dragoon gameplay)

      • ZeroWalker

Well thats true I totally agree with it but I rely like that monster hunter like combat system. I just hope it changes so much it´s not slugish and slow like it was from the start.

  • Wiccan1109

They pretty much ticked every box with this trailer when appealing to their demographic. Dramatic emotional song, strong facial expressions, Bahamut/ weapons for the fanboys, and potent themes such as cameraderie, destruction and protection. You don’t even need to know 1.0’s plot to understand roughly whats going on, and thats working really well for SE.

For me, this was the best FMV ive seen come out of the FF franchise, which is saying a lot because the series is home to some of my favourite gaming cut scenes. Whilst its true, a cut scene isnt showcasing the actual game, its a good indication of the story direction, which is something that 1.0 always felt a bit lost in. The original opening trailer was not as well receivd as this.

    • I thought the exact same thing. As someone that’s never played FFXIV, all it took was this one cutscene for me to get the gist of what’s going on, and what A Realm Reborn will be picking up from.

    • Really agree with you on This by far the best CG in a longtime FF moment. for me it was FFXI opening it was dramatic then chains of promthia ending.(Distant worlds theme)  Very emotional to see Grand companies United to take down The Garlean empire and imperials fight, with Van Darnes watching over and the leaders of Grand Company and nations Viewing the war. Such a touching Moment. Ver1.0 wont be forgotten.

  • Robert Leonardi

Pretty much one of the best CG scenes i’ve ever seen, and i never expected Square to destroy Eorzea o.o, even the song fits so well in the scene, but i can’t help but feel depressed at the end of it because all of the things i did in Eorzea is now ashes

  • Rocsas

So Sefiroth summons a giant meteor to destroy the earth and failed
The bad guy from here summons a giant meteor with bahamut inside and its a complete success.

    I love ff logic

    • RablaAndrews

      Okay hang on.

      1) Meteor in VII didn’t ‘fail’. It was a huge catastrophe.

      2) Dalamud wasn’t a meteor. It was a moon. And it wasn’t even actually a moon, it was a prison made to seal Bahamut centuries before the events of XIV. Nael released it since he got pissy when he started losing.

      • Very well said, couldent say any better myself.

      • Scrooge_McDuck

His not pissy because he’s starting to lose. The Empire is winning anyway, but Nael wants the “cleanse the sinners faster” approach.

        • RablaAndrews

He only went into “RAGH DESTROY EVERYTHING” mode after you destroyed the pillar thing that captured the energy from defeating Garuda or whatever. So after he took a huge loss.

          That’s what I meant.

  • I don’t know what just happened

but I think they could’ve used Alexander at that moment

  • Zenthos

The only thing they need to do now is remove those ridiculous subscription fees.

    • keep dreaming that be working free for the developers.

      • Zenthos

Really? After spending a hard earned 60 bucks I have to pay again just to “play” the game. Thats like me giving the developers 60 bucks for free. I guess games like GW2 (that went past the two million sales mark) go bankrupt. And im not “dreaming”, im simply not going to buy the game.

        • Luna Kazemaru

Reborn is going to be 30 bucks so no and those who played long enough to the last character save don’t have to pay for the game again. If you don’t like sub fees there are alot of F2P games out there just because Gw2 (IMO not a great game) is doing that b2p thing doesn’t mean everyone of them is going to follow.

          • Zenthos

So I have a good 2 months start till it reaches 60$ of a 15 dollar subscription for a 30$ game. Ah, but yes, the situation has not changed. Regardless of them sparing us 30$ or hell even if they gave it out for free, im still paying over 500$+ dollars for a game by the end of my playthrough. Doesn’t that sound a bit ridiculous? Couldn’t I get more enjoyment out of hundreds of ftp games than one subscription based one for 500$+? Yes, I could. Hence, im not going to pay for a pay to play game. Period.

          • Luna Kazemaru

Comparing F2P games to P2P games is never a good idea I’m going to tell you right now. I get my money of of P2P games due to good content and regular sever stability. Like I said if you don’t want to play the game good for you no one is forcing you but I was correcting you on that miss information.

          • Trotmeister

Oh man, not this again. This discussion could go on forever, but the thing is, FF is not free and will never be free. And the core playerbase is totally okay with that because unlike people like you, they realise that no “free” game could be as polished and interesting. Even this trailer wouldn’t be made if the game was free.

        • Yeah the game should be at least free to download then pay to play. I don’t like buying each expansion for an online game

          •  With this title expected to be released on PS3, it would probably be in their best interest to take this approach. Even have the first 30 days be free on top of it. Possibly make it only free to download for PS+ members if they want to go that route. That is of course, if they have enough confidence in the game selling itself when it is released that way.

          • Steven Boivin

Can’t tell you if the game will be free to get for newcomers (Veteran players who played the first game will get the ability to download the new client for free if I remember right), but they confirmed that the first or first two months are gonna be free when you start up.

        • I’ve guess you assume it was free to play??… MMORPG by SE with the Title FF. No way it be free and FFXI it’s not free yet, it’s been around over a

  • Draparde

I love how they show off the ‘main characters’ using the job abillities and such, since most job storylines tout their power (at least ones like WAR and MNK) to be like having 100 men… and it shows with the war taking out 5 people easily alone ect…

if there *wasent* a meteor with bahamut inside above them i think Eorzea could have stood a chance…

would have loved to see a MNK and DRG in it though…(preferably one of them being a lalafel~ )

    •  The warrior was actually power leveling everyone in that video. Alas, it still could not save Eorzea.

    • was hoping Dragoon be jumping around spearing people with Ring of Talons and Hellfire Dive but very emotional ending and Monk would had been epic.

      louisoix Wont be forgotten.

  • Lunir Malheur

That’s just so freakin’ sad ):

Do you imagine that a company needs to kill one of the worlds you played in an awesome video? I know it’s for the sake of the game, although it’s sad to see it ):

    • Eilanzer

Nah…that copy paste world without anything decent in it…A thousand explosions isn´t enough!!!

      • CirnoLakes

        “without anything decent in it”
        I beg to differ.

  • Administrator Final Fantasy Th

Square Enix does it again, the visuals are superb! They really are the best for CG scenes! *drools* Can’t wait to see Versus and Lightning Returns :)

  • Damn, that super badass grandpa at the end…why are the old always so freaking cool?! I assume the main cast was teleported into that new reboot world. Yeah I’m actually interested into the story now. lol

  • That was louisoix. He did teleport them to New world (ARR)

  • pretty sad louisoix Coulden’t stop bahamut from Destroying the world but of course that had to happen to move in to ARR. Very emotional Ending and bahamut couldent be Convert in to a Primal. Broke The Summon Seal.

Alpha in 11/26 Hope i get in.

  • ARR pay fees are if your not a “legacy Member” your gonna paid 14.99$ and Legacy members $9.99 lol

    •  Probably not the best way to attract new users…

      • Irrelevant as they’re trying to appease old users.

        • riceisnice

          Old?! W-well. You’re short!

        •  Figured as much. I did play FFXIV as well but stopped like 8 months ago (only played for about a year on and off). I’m guessing the offer doesn’t stand unless you had an active account until the final day?

          • only takes 3 months payments to get legacy status.

          •  /dance

          • steven bambic

Don’t dance to fast Jason, the three month payment had to be done during a certain period. I believe it was from Janurary to September. Any 90 day payment would give you legacy, and it would have shown on your log-in page. You can also check your account too if you have the legacy status

Our linshell waiting for the end of the era. laggy like hell >.<

    • Godmars

But it does seem indicative of any major online event – not just this on in particular – that something goes wrong or was unprepared for.

But let me get this straight: to get to this spectacular cutscene about a final major battle, all the player actually does is stand around?

      • There was a event that was gonna happen, Garlean army where gonna invade just like you see in that cs but It was a fail duo to Error server connection. alot people lost connection and some were okay. But yeah it was a fail but after the server shut down and everyone got kick after 10 min or so and there was a link for that cs in login screen.

      • Robert Leonardi

linkshell is FF’s version of clan

  • MagiusNecros

Little did Eorzea know that GILGAMESH appeared after the destruction and saw a perfect opportunity to plunder the corpses for some NEW WEAPONS.

    • Göran Isacson

Gilgamesh is the traveller of all voids- to him a mere apocalypse is a trifling matter!

Just as long as he’s not caught directly IN it, because that stuff hurts yo.

    •  He’s not really that awesome of a Gilgamesh if he doesn’t pack Gates of Babylon, his treasure trove of legendary swords, already.

Anyway, found this a rather weird trailer choice. Square Enix knew their game was failing but cover it up with this as if it’s never happened. To be totally honest tho, Realm Reborn does look visually interesting for a change, but ever since I played Guild Wars 2, I can’t go back to any MMO that doesn’t generate it’s own events.

  • CirnoLakes

I tried to log in for the finale as I didn’t want to miss such a big event.

But I got nothing but connection errors.:x

    • Was in battle with a Lag out of hell and i Couldent see other chars but i was fighting those magitek robots. then got 0 connection and kick me out.

  • Ultimaniacx4

Jeez.  Square’s one of the only studios that can make me shed a tear for a character I know nothing about…..

  • Interesting video.  I liked the visuals in it, though the music wasn’t my cup of tea.  I stayed away from XIV because of the bad reputation it got when it first came out, but I’ll keep an eye on this reboot.  If it turns out well, I may give it a shot.  I have a lot of happy memories from playing FFXI.  It would be nice if this game could provide the same. ^_^

  • K Mantle

it’s been ages since I got goosebumps

  • doubletaco

Well, S-E can make good cutscenes if not a good MMO.

    • komiko12

If they want extra cash, they can make CGIs for other companies.

    • Elvick

      Many praise FFXI.

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Again I feel like a cold-hearted  jerk, but I can’t bring myself to care about this end or their ‘new’ game…

    • CirnoLakes

The new game shows a lot of promise.

  • Syn

Beautiful, simply beautiful, SE, you truly are the masters of CG cutscenes

  • Neppygear

    Over before it even began.

  • I like how Grahf just stands there, watching everything in his DOST THOU DESIRE THE POWER? pose.

    • Meintje Diepstraten

It’s Gaius van Baelsar, not Grahf, but I’m sure you know that ^^; They do look slightly similar.

  • KingRuff

Square…You just made the greatest trailer I have ever seen. The action was top notch. I even feel sad for all the people that died, and I never even played this game!
Sidenote: All FFXIV players just lost the game.

  • komiko12

Huh. I think it is not the first time Square destroyed a world.
    *looks at FF6*

Nevertheless, I do agree with most people that it is one of the most amazing cutscenes I’ve watched. Didn’t expect all that awesomeness to be compressed in that short time.

Anyone else who liked those Magitek Armors?

  • XiaomuArisu

    Im gonna say it again!
    Old man for Dissidia 3!

  • A very fancy way to say GAME OVER!

  • Wow some part of the video reminds me of certain scenes in .hack/Beyond the World…. So much awesomeness. Too bad the players lost…. But hey, there ALO ARR coming!

When it comes to CG cutscene, SE is d*mn good at it.

  • DragonSix
