<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, Capcom released Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen in Japan. The game debuted at the #2 spot on the top-20 software sales chart, with 125,363 copies sold.

Meanwhile, Tomodachi Collection: New Life maintained its #1 spot with an additional 145,000 copies sold, bringing total retail sales to nearly 550,000 copies. Total sales, including download copies, however, are higher.

In a financial results Q&A, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that download sales of Tomodachi Collection: New Life were at about 10% after its launch week. Iwata also shared that Nintendo are noticing a trend where 3DS users that purchase a game via download choose to do the same again with their next purchase. This trend is noticeable in the case of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. A number of consumers that purchased New Leaf as a download went on to do the same with Tomodachi Collection.

Also released last week in Japan was the new Tomb Raider. That game sold 35,250 copies and was very closely followed by Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram, which sold 34,292 copies.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

I keep thinking… what the Wii U will look like when it has games coming out regularly.

    • puchinri

      I know, huh?

I actually wonder, when certain titles come around, will sales just jump when that title hits? Or will people slowly start buying them up a week or two before the game releases?

It’ll be interesting to watch the numbers as the titles release.

    • kylehyde

Maybe in the same way as vita now

      • Probably better, but it’s going to be several months before we’re anywhere near that point. There’s very little to sell people on a Wii U until this holiday.

TW101 and Pikmin 3 aren’t really going to do anything. Stuff like the new Marios, X, SMT X FE and Smash Bros. are what will help. Recognized games, basically. Wii U will eventually have quite a few of those in Japan, but it’s going to take a while.

        • psycho_bandaid

Also keep in mind that Ninty has the knack for making legitimate system sellers. Sony tends to put out lots of games of good quality, but Ninty can get folks to pick up a system in droves with just one or two games.

        • ronin4life

I wouldn’t doubt Pikmin. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see it push systems.

          • I don’t know about that. Pikmin was always a cult hit, never a mainstream success. I doubt it’s going to be one now.

          • Tails the Foxhound

I’m not expecting anything record breaking, but we still haven’t seen what, if anything, Smash has done for Pikmin’s popularity. I’m sure it’ll at least outpace the prior two by a fair bit.

        • Solomon_Kano

And even then, we’ve yet to see Nintendo’s holiday plans. I’m really interested to see what the E3 Directs bring for Wii U. They need a bombshell.

          • Yeah, I’m interested to see how they space their games out. We’ve seen the negative effect that releasing both NSMB2 and NSMBU so close to each other had. I have to wonder why they’re doing the same thing with Zelda now.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, putting out WW HD and the new LttP in the same year… I didn’t really get that. They’ve seen what results that brings, but I guess they’re counting on each to be different enough that the audience will still want both? I dunno. HD versions of old games already have a pretty low ceiling, but then you’re putting out another Zelda game on your more popular system as well? I don’t see that playing out well.

So, yea, it should be interesting to see how they space things out. It should also be interesting to see what kind of minefield they end up having to navigate in terms of other publishers’ release dates this year. AC and COD are coming, of course, but who knows what else next-gen holds just yet. Should be good.

          • Tails the Foxhound

Retro’s mystery game will surely (hopefully) be out this year too.

          • Solomon_Kano

I REALLY hope that comes out this year. It was said that we’ll be seeing it announced in the near future, and they usually don’t announce games far ahead of their release (apart from Pikmin 3 and Skyward sword, I can’t think of another time they’ve done that save for Smash Bros.).

  • noctis_nox

Your 3DS LL’s number is wrong. It should be 37,536.
    A typo?

    • Whoops, fixed! Both my 3DS and 3DS XL numbers were off. WordPress must not have saved the last changes I made to the post for some reason. Thanks. :)

  • puchinri

Did Z do better than the first Mugen Souls?

Also, yay TC (and AC, as well as Luigi’s Mansion). The list is looking pretty nice.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yep. Mugen Souls did 23,004. First game was pretty bad so its understandable if people didn’t want Z. Though it might pick up if its actually good and word of mouth gets around.

      • DesmaX

Well, it didn’t look any better too

  • I might rent Bioshock infinite soon. Or maybe I should do a replay of the Uncharted trilogy… My next big purchase will be Fuse. I hope I can find some friends to play online with.

  • NekoDraga

For some reason, I thought it said Dangan Ronpa.

  • AnimeLeirus .

    Dragon’s Dogma 2 SOON!

    I can smell it!

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m still betting (read: hoping, praying, dreaming, wishing) that that’s what Deep Down turns out to be. They announced it as a new IP, but juggling two similar IP just makes no damn sense. They’d cannibalize each other.

  • wow, Photo Kano sells are really high… Could they please bring this to America T____T?

    • ShadowDivz

Sorry dude, but i dont see that coming at all?

      • Yeah, I know. Is just me hoping for a english release, it can’t hurt… right?

        • ShadowDivz

It can. Youl be like a wounded animal, waiting to be put out of your misery…
Come on friend, let’s go play out back. *wipes away tear*

  • psycho_bandaid

photo kano didn’t do too bad it seems, considering its already been out on psp. I’m surprised Bioshock didn’t do better. Granted its an FPS, but CoD has been doing well for itself in japan. I guess FPS still has a ways to go there.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Yaaay, Dragon’s Dogma!

Now, Bioshock, that interests me. Not it’s sales, rather, the fact that it’s published by Take Two. I figured they’d hand it off to another publisher in Japan, like how Ubisoft and Activision give Square Enix publishing duty on AC and COD.

  • Aristides

The vita isn’t doing to bad considering it’s a weak week for the system :P

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, with just Photo Kano Kiss and Labyrinth Cross Infinity this week, I’m surprised it did as much as it did.

      • Aristides

Indeed, let’s hope it keeps up the momentum :P

  • Göran Isacson

Man, New titles everywhere in this week! Naruto, seventh Dragon and various Nintendo titles are the only ones clinging on the list, rest are all fresh breezes… and considering how these titles seem to be big-shot titles odds are they’ll cling to the charts for at least a few weeks from here on.
