STEVEN, Creator Of The Demon Summoning Program, Is Back In SMTIV

By Ishaan . May 10, 2013 . 10:30am

STEVEN is back in Shin Megami Tensei IV. We’ve seen Atlus mention him before, but today they updated the game’s website with a new video of him. STEVEN, as you may know, developed the Demon Summoning Program seen in the Shin Megami Tensei games. He occasionally appears before you in IV to drop useful hints.

Note that, despite STEVEN’s return, Shin Megami Tensei IV is not connected to any of the previous games story-wise. Atlus have said, however, that they’re dropping little references to the previous games for fans to pick up on.

Another example of this is the Black Samurai, who wears a Demonica suit similar to the ones in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. She, too, provides the player with cryptic clues. Perhaps she and STEVEN are both part of the neutral alignment? They’re even featured in the same section on the website, under “mysterious characters”.

STEVEN is Brook from One Piece, now that’s an odd choice for his VA. Now I’m getting my hopes up to hear STEVEN laugh with a “Yohohohohohoho”, but probably it won’t happen.

i hope there will be little throwbacks for those of us who played the whole series. Having STEVEN show up randomly without acknowledging the events of SMTI and SMTII would be a little bit weird.

    • AkuLord3

Ehh its really not that odd…its kinda fitting especially playing a serious character

  • sfried

The background effects around 0:12 are pretty neat.

  • ChiffonCake

Hmm, this makes me really curious as to what sort of other references we can expect…

    • Ben Ruiz

It isn’t just a random reference. STEVEN was in the first two SMT games as well. He was the programmer of the demon summoning program and he appeared from time to time to give you upgrades to your COMP in the first two games.

      • ChiffonCake

…yeah, I know. I was talking about SMT references there. :E Mostly Nocturne, since that’s the main SMT that I’ve put the most time into.

        • Ben Ruiz

Ah well I mean there is the Cathedral of Shadows priest being and actually some of the music is remixed from the first game. The preview that was written up on Siliconera also talked about the game intro and from the way they described it, it almost sounded exactly like the intro to the first game.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    STEVEN hawkings

    • Mozendo

      Thank you, captain obvious.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

(╯°□°)╯︵( .o.) how long have you been waiting to say that?

  • Tom_Phoenix

He’ll probably greet us with a physics joke and hand us our asses in poker.

  • Junko Enoshima

Umm, I’m straight, but this guy is hotter than in the other games.

    • MrTyrant

      Yeah Mara, we believe you.

      • Junko Enoshima

Don’t judge by appearances, you sick person. :(

  • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

Reminds me a little of an old man Louis Cypher mixed with Mr. Rogers.

  • ragingmerifes

He looks even nerdier in this incarnation.

  • Ethan_Twain

So all these little 30 second videos Atlus has been putting up promoting SMT IV are largely meaningless to me. I don’t speak Japanese, and they’ve been largely dialogue and menu content. But I click on them anyway because I want to catch the 30 seconds of music out of the background.

Is that pathetic? I feel like that’s kinda desperate.

    • Adam Primaeros

Nope, SMT music’s cool, and IV’s got neat ones so far.

  • Jonattas F.

He can’t walk but can cross his legs?

    • Adam Primaeros

      …using his functional arms.

  • Detrimont

Louis Cypher has to appear, he even appeared in SJ (as a female)

but being SMT LC is usually a focal story point

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

He won’t be in this game. They’ve already confirmed that.

      • Detrimont

oh well, he will be missed

(that doesnt fully rule out lucifer though)

  • Exkaiser

Personally, I like to imagine that STEVEN is Nakajima.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Do Megami Tensei and Shin take place in the same world? I’ve never been sure.

      • Exkaiser

Doesn’t seem likely. If they did, STEVEN and Nakajima would have to be separate characters working on the DSP in isolation, because STEVEN only distributed the demon summoning program after being crippled on his first summoning. On the other hand, there’s no acknowledgement of anything from the first game in Shin- as far as I know- and certainly nothing of the second Megaten.

My pet theory is that it’s a branch universe- the Shin universe branches off given that the creator of the DSP (that is, Nakajima) gets injured, while in Megami Tensei he’s successful.

  • Steven Hunt

Time to dye my hair gray.

  • Alberto Maytorena

Hell yeah! I always felt it odd when the series dropped off the cyberpunk elements in favour of the spiritual themes, but now this is just what I wanted. Thank you for putting my favourite Stephen Hawking’s expy in Atlus.

  • Göran Isacson

Brook as Stephen Hawking. Did not see that one coming, though I am curious how they will play his appearance when they claim this isn’t connected to the other games in the franchise.

You know who’d make a very good English voice actor for his character to closely match the Japanese counterpart? Maurice LaMarche.

The one most recent character that I can think of that he voiced was Father from Kids Next Door.
