Level 5’s ghost-collecting RPG, Youkai Watch, is getting a manga series. As previously reported, this is the manga that will begin serializing in Shogakukan’s Ciao magazine in Japan.

Anime News Network reports that this will be a shoujo manga featuring a female protagonist. The manga will be drawn by Chikako Mori, and like the game, will tell the story of someone that is able to see Japanese ghosts after acquiring a special watch.

The Youkai Watch manga will debut in the issue of Ciao that is is scheduled to be published in early January. The game allows one to play as either a male or female character, so it’s interesting that Level 5 are choosing to go with a female lead for the manga series.

Youkai Watch is also getting an anime adaptation, which will begin airing on TV Tokyo Janurary 8th in Japan. Meanwhile, a second game in the series is in development as well.

  • Chogokin

Youkai Watch has a manga for boys in Corocoro.

    • Ahhh~. So it has two manga? That’s cool! Then hopefully the anime will find a way to fit in both MCs.

      • FlyingPony

I’d imagine it going to be difficult, especially if the characteristic of both lead and their adventure and event is the same.

Which is the reason why we never saw Lucas, Brendan and Calem in Pokemon anime since May, Dawn and Serena already filled the slot.

      • Will Jay

From what I understand, they both run concurrent of each other to a degree, so they could if they wanted. But Keita will definitely be the main focus.

      • Sergio Briceño

It’d be cool, but seeing how their other anime series try to follow the game’s story arcs really closely I’d doubt they would take the risk of going too far by making them both MCs at the same time. But if they managed to make it work it’d be awesome.

        • Ah, I hadn’t considered that. Good point, thanks for mentioning it~. Here’s to hoping though, huh~?

  • CirnoTheStrongest

oh hey. I didn’t know there was a FemC option in the game..

    • 3PointDecoupage

All the promo stuff.shows the boy. Thats why

      • CirnoTheStrongest

Yeah that tends to be how it goes. I don’t recall it being said in any of the interviews/press releases either.

        • 3PointDecoupage

It was mentioned in an article before.

        • Yuuki

it was even in a trailer…

    • Yeah, the promo material shows Keita, but one of the early gameplay vids shows the girl option.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

        huh that’s pretty cool

  • Warboss Aohd

i approve o’ goin’ da road less traveled.

  • Helepythia

When I look at that cat, one thing comes to mind. Doraemon’s cousin?

    • PreyMantis

But Doraemon is a robot from the future…

  • FlyingPony

Shojo manga featuring female lead… nothing shocking. That is how it goes, unless the manga is shounen ai or yaoi..

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Looks like a cool manga. They should translate and pack it in with the game if it ever gets localized!

  • i wish we’d get this game in English…
