A Closer Look At Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster’s Sales

By Ishaan . January 13, 2014 . 11:58am

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster was released in Japan on December 26th, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in Japan. As previously reported, the PS3 version sold 185,918 copies while the Vita Twin Pack version sold another 149,132 copies.

Sales tracker Media Create have shared with Siliconera that, in its first week, the PS3 version of the Remaster sold through 80.93% of its shipment. Meanwhile, the Vita version sold through 87.24% of its shipment.

By the second week, the PS3 version had sold through 89.76% of its shipment, with total sales at 225,448. Meanwhile, the the Vita version had sold through through 95.52% of its shipment, with total sales at 182,170 copies. That is to say, by week 2, both versions of the Remaster were effectively sold out, and Square Enix have, no doubt, shipped a few more copies since, to keep up with demand.

Not everyone bought Final Fantasy X and X-2 together, though. 25,443 people bought Final Fantasy X HD as a standalone game on the Vita upon release. This amounted to a 90.57% sell-through. By week 2, the game had sold 31,775 copies in total, selling through 97.26% of all copies; meaning, once again, that the game was sold out by its second week.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy X-2 HD was understandably a little less popular, being a sequel. Only 5,357 people bought that game in its week of release, and that amounted to a mere 46.64% sell-through of all copies shipped. By week 2, total sales of Final Fantasy X-2 had reached 16,355, selling through 84.12% of its shipment.

Not too shabby a performance at all on all fronts, but it should be interesting to see how the games sell in their third week on store shelves, given the large drop-off in week 2. That information will be available this Wednesday as per usual.

  • TheExile285

Good, good. I want a FFXII HD next! But please SE, no FFXII-2 >_>

    • chibiwall

seriously, i’ll buy it, but I want a ff exclusive on vita… This console deserves it

      • Duo Maxwell

I’m surprised that the Vita sale caught up with the PS3 one, consider the install base.

        • k.b.a.

this kinda illustrates the vita landscape does is not? it says to developers and publishers every where many people do not have the vita, but the ones that do will certainly purchase rpgs. by which we mean jrpgs because they are easier to make/remake then those glitchy pesky western open world rpgs.
at least that is my take away. keep in eye open and an ear to the ground to see how things develop over the next year. i feel as hunters wind down in popularity which is the only direction that they can go, the landscape of the vita will look less diverse and more… japan?

          • Duo Maxwell

From what I heard, the attach rate of Vita owners are quite high, even as close as 10 to 1 (not sure if that includes the digital purchasing or not).

Look like Vita owners really love their device.

        • Hound

I think it’s the format. FFX & X-2 weren’t portable before, and are the kinds of games where off-the-path grinding is beneficial (especially if you want to complete the additional content from the international versions.)

    • César H. Sandoval

Isn’t the XII sequel a DS game?

      • Arcana Drill

yep, revenant wings, a real time strategy game on the ds, it was quite fun…. the only downside is that it have too little of Balthier and Fran ;D

        • Jonas Bern

          yep, to little bunny costumes.

          • k.b.a.

            …who was wearing a costume?
i would like to see a bunny girl to rival felicia in darkstalkers, and an amalgam arachnid/insect character to prey upon Q.Bee in a new darkstalkers. off topic but i can’t not say it sometimes

      • Sydney Losstarot

        “Don’t listen to Ondore’s lies!”

    • Amalaira

Well, I’d much prefer if they did HD updates on the OLDER games (5-9), as the graphics are in far more need of an update than XII’s. But what are the odds that they will do that?!

      • malek86

Those would be much more expensive (they’d have to make them 3D first). So yeah, those odds are looking pretty low.

        • Amalaira

Well, they DID do it for both 3 and 4! And those games are far inferior to 5 and 6.

Even completing redoing 7-9 visually would be easier than coming up with a completely new game, and I imagine a large number of people would buy a completely HD’d 7, 8, or 9!

          • k.b.a.

they remade 3 and 4 if you are talking about the ds version. they have already said they will not be remaking VII because social gaming and 3 versions of FFXIII and mmorpgs. plus they have got a lot on their plate making KH3 as confusing as possible and getting everyone disproportionately hyped for FFXV best case it is a great game and a good final fantasy but the wait was still way too long. worst case it is a bad final fantasy and we end up with that RE6 scenario. alternate worst case scenario it s a game for a different demographic. a new modern customer base who make us look old and inferior

          • Hound

7 & 8 are also on the PC and look fine, and especially good with the appropriate mods.

      • DesmaX

You can’t do HD Remaster of them (The SNES ones are sprites based, and the PS1 ones don’t have enough polygons for it to look good… And of course, they use pre-rendered scenarios, which would be a pain in the ass to “update”) . Those games need full Remakes

        • anarchy_panty

The real issue with the PS1 era titles is that Square lost the source code to most of the games from that era, so they’d have to remake them scratch rather than HD Remaster or something like that.

      • Ethan_Twain

FF VII and VIII on PC actually are in HD resolution already.

    • Suriel Cruz

I don’t want a sequel to Final Fantasy XII, since there’s one for the DS. What I want is a HD Remaster for Final Fantasy XII, like this one.

    • MaximDualBlade

They will, my gut tells me and it’s only wring half of the time ;)
With European and US sales they will easily surpass 500k units sold, so I dare say it’s the most succesful HD remaster to date.

Unless they were expecting crazy numbers like 1 millions units in the first week :S
I hope they don’t take 2 years to release it this time, or more accurately I don’t want another 2 years of wait between the announcement and the release date

      • malek86

I think that honor should likely go to the God of War collection. Unless you meant Squenix only… but then, how many remasters did they make?

        • MaximDualBlade

I meant all remasters ,so you’re most likely right, I will not search for it, but you make an excellent point.

    • MrRobbyM

      Yes please.

    • Arcana Drill

Huuum, Revenant wings is kinda a XII-2 :D

    • SerChief

I agree, we need XII HD!!!

    • Ethan_Twain

I agree, no FF XII-2 please. Nothing Square Enix Japan has released since that game has even approached that world’s distinct sense of location and history, nor have they written a story that far off the JRPG beaten path.

A modern FF XII-2 would be all about Penelo and Vaan continuing to not admit they like each other. Because heaven forbid we have an established adult couple in a JRPG… what’s that? Balthier and Fran? They would need to be taken almost out of the game completely, and given no character moments. The distinctive world of Ivalice would probably be reduced to little disposable maps or something, and the adult cast of FF XII would need to be replaced with a younger crew with better anime hair. And maybe an impractical hover surfboard.

    • Heropon

FFXII already have a sequel on DS which named FFXII revenant wing and maybe we will have Its remake . It is the only sequel that Toriyama didn’t mess up so i am fine with it

    • easter

Yes please. Would throw money at Squeenix for FF12 HD

    • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

As much as people probably won’t believe me, and I am fine with that – Square-Enix had already asked a small developer that has worked on a Vita game before to port FFXII to Vita, however last I heard the project was shut down. Doesn’t mean they won’t do it though, PS3 version seems more viable.

      • TheExile285

Don’t know where you heard this but I’d find it hard to believe they wouldn’t port FFXII HD to Vita since they already expressed interest in it and FFX|X-2 sold well on the system.

        • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

As I said, don’t expect people to believe me but I heard it from a developer. Yeah, I thought that myself. Maybe they shifted off that developer studio or decided to postpone it until after FFX/X-2 HD was out. I doubt it won’t come though.

    • Chido55

      Princess!!
      No need to worry.

    • k.b.a.

but… there really is no need for one. it is a great game, and the ps2 is a great system than should still be in your house. i would love to play FF12 on a vita however and international edition would be great.

but now that this is out of the way and making money as true FF games do, my list is topped with VI and V remakes. not ports, remakes. the 7-9 remakes which will never happen, and making sure 15 is solid. if they want to make social gaming a thing, adjust FFVI and V so that street pass speeds up my esper sync and job mastery.

  • http://www.myspace.com/Juan_Rod bluejuan85

Can’t wait for the US version of both games so I can check out the content we missed out and with this I hope its a clear go for SE to make FFXII HD.

    • Sydney Losstarot

Yes yes yes. The masses have spoken and it is now time for FFXII HD to be in production.

      • k.b.a.

        5 and 6 remakes first

  • HerosLight

Has anyone mentioned if the Japanese version lets you switch music to Original or Remastered yet?

As long as it sells enough for SE to consider doing FF12 HD, I’m fine with that.

    • Daniel Bui

Unfortunately it doesn’t let you do that. It doesn’t let you skip cutscenes either. I’m still getting it though.

      • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

No cutscene skip!? But Seymour Flux…! I was hoping…!
        Grr….

      • HerosLight

        No cutscene skip?

        Wow, what were they thinking?

        • Daniel Bui

Yeah, its a real bummer. Don’t know what they were thinking either.

      • Hound

        Seriously? You can’t skip cutscenes?
But, they changed that for Kingdom Hearts 1.5

Well if that’s true, I have no reason to bother buying it unless I have a vita and the price drops. My PS2 still plays them fine.

        • Daniel Bui

I’d say get it anyway. There’s enough new content that was added if you never played the International version of the game.

          • Hound

International version of FFX has been available for a long time and had an english language option. I didn’t bother with X-2′s, but probably wouldn’t be that enticed to pay full price on the HD collection just to get Last Mission.

It’s sad that the HD version is just a cosmetic face-lift without the practical changes that were available in Square’s recently released Kingdom Hearts collections.

          • Daniel Bui

I understand your frustration, and respect your decision. I’m getting the game because its always been my favorite FF game. Not being able to skip cutscenes will irk me a little, but not enough to ruin my enjoyment of the game.

        • Steven Higgins

Well the ability to skip cut-scenes was in the original Final Mix, not just added for the I.5 version. The only thing they added in the I.5 version that wasn’t in the original FM was the reaction system, summons being moved and Trophys and the camera being tweaked. everything else was already there.

  • Arcana Drill

Great! i’m, so excited to play the international version of two great titles… and now i wonder if we will have a X-3, i’m only sure if they follow the story line from the novel/drama… many heads will explode….

    • Anime10121

X-3′s all but confirmed by now. I mean, they’ve done too much, said too much, and basically put it in writing that X2.5 was To be continued…

So X-3′s coming, only question is, that if it continues the plot of the “novel”, will anyone want it (I will, if only for the art)…

      • Arcana Drill

yes the new designs for yuna and tidus look great :D i thought that they were new characters at first, then i began to notice the similarities,

        • Anime10121

Yep I’d love to see those models in a game… preferably a next gen game! It could be Toriyama and co’s first next gen game. Though honestly at this point, I see X-3 being a current gen release while Nomura and co get the next gen to themselves much in the same way that Toriyama and Kitase had this one to themselves (I also dont see Square developing three next gen 1rst production team jrpgs either).

          • MaximDualBlade

Toriyama… FFX-3: Lightning visits Spira XD

          • zaidandzhadow

The good news is that torus looks badass but he’s a complete jerk

          • Warboss Aohd

don’t even joke about that, who knows who could be reading this page.

        • Nice Boat Quatro

I’m surprised with the details like Tidus wearing Jecht’s headband while Yuna still looks like Yuna despite having a different hairstyle.

        • Steven Higgins

          New models?

      • Nice Boat Quatro

Remember the plan I told you about not mentioning it?

        http://www.entravity.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/valvrave-15-44-l-elf-gun.jpg

    • KnifeAndFork

      God no…

  • Anime10121

But couldnt the “large week 2 drop off” be attributed to the fact that it sold through basically all of its stock?

    • KnifeAndFork

Most Japanese releases have large 2nd week drop offs. It’s Nintendo titles that hold their ground….

      • Anime10121

Oh I know that much, but I mean, considering the game has sold through nearly its entire stock, it’d make sense that if they hadnt shipped anymore in the second week (which only makes sense considering they’d have to wait to see sell through rates before shipping out another batch), then the only amount it could have sold would be no more than the leftover stock…which is exactly what happened.

I know that FF titles are 99% frontloaded, but they also usually dont sell out nearly their entire shipment in the first week either (though it WAS a bit easier for them to do as much with the remaster, as it has a lower shipment than most “main” titles outside of Lightning Returns).

  • Jeffrey Kuhl

Awesome. Can’t wait for the U.S. version.

  • epy

Please, do not base X-3 on that fanfic that somehow got published. Please. You’ve done enough.

    • Pekola

Or what? you’ll blow their heads off?

      …Oh wait.

(i am so sorry, lol. I can’t resist)

      • TheExile285

        LOL!

        10/10

      • Nice Boat Quatro

And then he’ll do something really dirty with their dead bodies.

      • Hound

He’ll conveniently place football-looking dangers outside of their headquarters.

Their resist to kick will be none! muahaha

    • Christopher Nunes

What fanfic? I wasn’t aware something like that existed and got published… I mean a FANFIC getting published? Like publish, publish? Like an original work or novel officially published?

      That’s a bit surprising.

PS: Love your Inyasha Avatar. I LOVE that series… I wish they made another “Secret of the Cursed Mask” game for the series.

      • epy

There’s a couple of rumours going around that the X-2.5 novella S-E published, which is the basis for the audio drama, was a fanfic Nojima sent to the editor by mistake. Be it true or not, it has been universally panned. If you check the reviews at amazon.jp a lot of people say “I wish I’ve never read this”.

The avatar is actually a gif I really liked from one of my favorite episodes, too bad it doesn’t show.

        • Christopher Nunes

          I see.

And which episode is that? Also ever played Inuyasha: Secret of the Cursed Mask before?

          • epy

It was the last time where Inuyasha visited Kagome’s world. The only Inuyasha game I played was Feudal Combat and that was pretty meh which is a shame because it has all the material needed to make a great fighting game.

          • Christopher Nunes

Last time on-screen where Inuyasha visits Kagome’s home? But at the end of the series Inuyasha can come and go to Kagome’s world as much as he wants right?

I have Feudal Combat as well and I liked it, but I agree that there could polish it up more to make it better.

I recommended Secret of the Cursed Mask if you love RPGs as new characters are made exclusive for that game and designed by the mangaka artist herself. You play as either a young male or female high school student that helps prepare for the Doll Festival at their family’s shrine and somehow fall into the Feudal Era through the warehouse and you have to have a way back home with the help of Inuyasha and his friends.

The Male and Female Protagonist have different abilities exclusive to them with the Male being more Offensive Abilities and the Female Support Abilities. Also the Female Protagonist has an extra Character Ending with Sesshomaru where the Male doesn’t.

And their represent Antagonist is different for them depending on the character’s gender. It’s a good game where you bond with the cast and the gameplay is quite solid (though it tends to lag a bit) however I heard of a glitch in Naraku’s Castle is that if you Run Away in during his place the game will freeze or it was if you Run Away too many times and the game will freeze.

Luckily for me it hasn’t happened to me before but I tend to fight EVERY battle I come across though I have run away in Naraku’s Castle and outside as well.

Still it has a really good story and I like it, though I wish it have more developing scenes with the other cast like Kikyo, Kouga, and a few others.

The scenes with the characters you bond with are funny, especially the Male Protagonist (I think he has the more humorous scenes with Miroku, Sango, and Kagome).

            Just to let you know.

  • cyberkinghardy

I’m one of those who bought stand-alone X-2 since the English version won’t have it’s physical copy. THANKS TO SE. Tsk. Anyway, I’m still waiting for the english version of FFX that will be released this March.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Happy to see that both X and X-2 did well.

  • Furu Chi

Yay for FFX and FFX-II ! Now do FF-Type 0!

  • road

    Ishaan,

Would you mind double checking the sales of the Vita versions?

Media-Create says in their page ( http://www.m-create.com/ranking/ ) all three versions sold combined 224,000 units, but addin the figures from the article we reach 230,000.

Also, the sell-through of FFX/X-2 HD Twin is the same as FFXHD — 97.26%?.

    Thanks for the numbers!

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Ah, I see what you mean. I accidentally typed in the wrong sell-through figure for the Twin Pack on Vita, along with one other error concerning second week sell-through. Very embarrassing. The correct figures have been added to the post now. Thanks for pointing this out!

  • HassanJamal

If im reading this right, more people bought most on the ps vita? Neat. Maybe SE will NOW make more vita games, yes, please.

    • totoro

      Or more ports.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

No, I don’t see where you got that from. The PS3 version’s numbers are higher. The Vita had more versions because Square released the Twin Pack as well as separate versions for FFX and X-2.

      • HassanJamal

Im not a number kinds of man but those percentages are higher on the vita so thats where Im basing my assumption on. In any case, seeing as the vita still got a chunk of FFX/2 sales, this better help give SE the incentive to make more vita and or PS3 titles.

Im expecting they’re gonna remaster that FF0 PSP game for the vita and maybe the PS3 for another measure whether the vita is a stable enough platform to sell on.

        Again, Im just assuming here.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

The percentages are higher because fewer copies of the Vita version were shipped in the first place. That isn’t to say the Vita version did “badly” by comparison. Just that the figures aren’t higher than those of the PS3 version.

That said, I do think the chances for another HD Remaster are good, yeah. They’ve been talking about doing XII, and that would be nice to see. I expect it might take a while, though… XII is far more complex than X .

          • HassanJamal

Is that so? Sorry for the confusion then. Lets hope theres just more SE support to vita and ps3.

  • fireemblembeast

    Interesting…now can someone please tell me why the only places willing to sell me the vita version of ffx/x-2 HD are amazon and Walmart?! =__=;;;

  • Chido55

I’ll put my money in once its available here. Can’t wait!

  • Edward Parker

I would love to see a remastered version of Final Fantasy IX, I’ve played it on ps vita and it’s one of my favourite FF titles. I think it could greatly benefit from a makeover

    • LustEnvy

The backgrounds are pre-rendered, in low resolution. No amount of upscaling will fix the backgrounds. People need to understand this. FFX and on worked because backgrounds were rendered in 3D. Anything before X will look like crap. Only the character models, world map, and battle backgrounds can be truly improved. The towns/dungeons will be quite ugly.

They would have to remake all pre-rendered backgrounds, which is basically like making a whole new game.

it wouldn’t be a makeover at that point, but a remake.

      • PuddlesPuddles

I replayed FF9 recently, and in retrospect, I think it may be the best-looking game of the entire PS1 generation. The only weak point is the low resolution. But in every other respect, it’s a visual masterpiece. The monster animations, in particular, are stunning, even by today’s standards. Frankly, I don’t think it needs a remake.

      • Guest

        http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=551612

I think it would be an acceptable remaster on a handheld / digital release. They obviously have the original files stored before they downsized them for the PS1 release. Yeah, it’s still pre-rendered, but the backgrounds are gorgeous. It’s not impossible.

      • Edward Parker

        one can dream….

  • Oliver Teigaga

Really interested in finding out what the digital sales are on the Vita?

  • Bob Obb

I doubt the sales have staying power. After an hour or two of playing Remaster I lost interest. It barely felt like FFX, they changed all the wrong things. The faces and music were perfectly fine before. They didn’t even add the option to skip cutscenes

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I can agree on the music but the faces?

      http://pause.es/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/FFX-HD.jpg

    • 하세요

Remaster =/= remake. It was meant to be a new experience. Whether or not you enjoyed it or not is irrelevant – they succeeded in it not being the same FFX game.

  • Ric Vazquez

    Sold well as expected :D

  • Sergio Macellaro

Well, Vita ver of dual pack did good in Japan. I will buy mine too for Vita.
