Why Sengoku Basara 4 Sold Far Less Than Sengoku Basara 3

By Ishaan . February 4, 2014 . 12:30pm

Sengoku Basara 4 was released in Japan on January 23rd, and the game sold 176,313 copies, and sales tracker Media Create reports that the game saw a sell-through of 67.91%.

Additionally, as previously reported, Sengoku Basara 4 sold less copies at launch than Sengoku Basara 3 did on PlayStation 3, back when it was released in 2010. Sengoku Basara 3 on PS3 sold nearly 243,000 copies. Additionally, it sold another 50,000 copies on Wii.

So, why the lower opening sales for Sengoku Basara 4? Media Create say this is due to stagnant “non pre-order sales”. This would indicate that Sengoku Basara 4 managed to sell to fans of the series, but failed to gain traction among the broader audience.

In the case of Sengoku Basara 3, an anime adaptation of the series had helped increase its launch sales beyond those of 2006’s Sengoku Basara 2 (135,850 sold). Due to the fact that there was no such promotion prior to the release of Sengoku Basara 4, sales dropped off.

I would be disappointed by this but…it’s not like this game is ever gonna get released here anyway. So, whatever c:

I wonder if a Sengoku X Musou collab game would ever happen tho

  • Randgriz

Also SB3 was sold in other countries outside Japan, more success!

  • Brion Valkerion

Yup all valid and obvious reasons to why the sales were low. Hopefully it does not kill the franchise but gives Capcom a heads up that the games were not the selling point, it was all the side stuff and merch.

    AND PIZZA HUT PROMOS!

  • JonathanisPrimus

There’s another Sengoku Basara anime on the way.

  • ReidHershel

I just hope they release it stateside Sengoku Basara is a great musou game and it would be somewhat sad to not have it here, ESPECIALLY after all the development that was supposedly put into the game.

  • LDM

I got a crazy idea, Capcom. How about bringing SB4 overseas to make up for those lost costs?

    • VietKnight

Also just translate the text and add subtitles don’t hire any VA for overseas release also.

      • Rafael Martines

Just dat… why they don’t do just that? Sengoku Basara HD Collection, Sengoku Basara 3 and Utage in one pack and then Sengoku Basara 4 ¬¬

        • ArmoredBoar

There’s already a Sengoku BASARA HD Collection.
          It’s the first three games. (1, 2, 2H)
There’s already the Triple Pack for the HD Collection, 3 and Utage.

Why would they make a bundle with 4 this early in time?

    • ArmoredBoar

Crazy indeed, because they would lose even more money by doing that.
Vocal minorities don’t mean jack if they won’t bring sales.

      • landlock

Dynasty Warriors seems to do alright for TK. The anime is also quite popular in the west.

p.s. Can’t do as bad as things like Lost Planet 3. ;P

        • ArmoredBoar

The difference between DW and SB overseas is that DW is not only better known, it’s also been both over here longer and more prominent, with only a couple of entries missing. (see Musou Orochi 2 Ultimate)

SB literally had a heavily over-localized version of the first game that attempts to bear no relation and the third game. Had there been little to ANY interest, don’t you think they would’ve brought over Utage by now considering the amount of new content it brings?

      • Terraforce77

It’s not like the sales of Sengoku Basura 3 outside of Japan were even bad. Based various sites that measured the game’s sales, it ended up selling >300 thousand copies (on PS3 & Wii). While it’s not amazing, it’s pretty good for such a niche title, and that 300,000 was nearly half of the game’s total sales.

      • disgaea36

not if they release it digital like they have been doing recently the game might sell good enough with out them losing profit

      • Chiupon

aka why ff13 will sell forever and ever

      • SC

They could just release a subtitled patch on PSN, I doubt it’d cost them that much.

    • Terraforce77

Five down votes? Dang, I didn’t know so many people hated Sengoku Basura.

      • LDM

I honestly never expected my comment to gather so much controversy, especially for almost nearly obscure game series like Sengoku Basara.

    • Enma_Kozato

I think a good search through the Capcom Unity forum will inform you how Capcom USA feels about bringing anymore Basara games over.

    • k.b.a.

i’d ask for “or onimusha” but there’s a chance they’d capcom it.
probably end up looking like remember or something. with thrice the gifting mechanics and minokichi

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

The thing we know [about petitions] is that 100k signatures doesnt mean 100k Buyers – Reggie [Nintendo]

    • DarkLight

Yeah, all they need to do is just translate the text and subtitles and it will cut the localization costs even more.

    • Reilly Bernard

That would be a good idea in my book. It’s a shame that series like this get overlooked. We need to spread the word about stuff like this more. Random castles popping outta the ground, radish avalanches, giant transforming mecha spiders, and yelling samurai warriors? YES PLEASE! Why do these things not become popular when it’s what most people probably look for in a game?!

  • new_tradition

I say keep an eye out for a future expansion game that will be sold as a combo with the vanilla game. Savvy consumers are probably patient enough to wait for that. That was gonna be my plan, but I ended up importing a LE version that I really wanted >3>

  • Azul

I would think them most likely coming up with a new edition like utage would affect sales as well

  • MitsukiIX

dont worry a few month from now they will announce the expansion bringing back kenshin, kasuga and yoshitero

  • Weird Al Yankovic

Kasuga, Matsu, and the other NPC’s should’ve been in SB4 in the first place.

  • Masa

not just this game sold poor in Japan though, nearly all console games are selling lower than usual there lately.

    • icecoffemix

Total software sales of PS3 doesn’t really show significant decline though YOY.

Now we can only wait for PS4 launch to see if console gaming is really doooooomed in Japan.

    • Chogokin

Yep, even handhelds are down from last gen.

  • ifidontwhowill

Prepare for more mobile games now.

  • Strid

I’m waiting for the next version of it that will come out next month and have all the characters, modes, and stages it should have come with initially. Lesson learned anymore, that’s where my sale went.

  • eilegz

what did they expect, i mean even KOEI added online gameplay to its franchise, capcom that have more online experience and cooperative gameplay could not add it on basara…

  • http://www.shonengamez.com/ GameEmpireHD (Kaitou)

Sengoku Basara 3 was released in 2010 in both Japan and American, unless we’re talking about Utage then it’s a bit misleading.

  • Vyse Legendaire

Maybe because its a subpar sequel with a recycled engine and characters.

    • AkuLord3

That can’t be true when it has new characters and new gameplay on other things OH WAIT you were speaking out of ur ass sorry…continue

  • Eder García

near launch date of the PS4 can be a factor?

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I doubt most people care about PS4 at the moment in Japan, nor will they, until FFXV is released.

  • Lester Rat

I didn’t make a research nor I intend to, but I have the impression that most games are having a hard time selling to other audiences in Japan. It is not unusual that games from series sell the same or less than the predecessors.

  • leingod

I’m actually more hyped about Samurai Warriors 4

  • Warboss Aohd

it’s almost as if advertisement is needed to sell games or something.

  • http://soma4all.tk/ Soma

This game is good. Just return previous characters and make all npc playable.

  • Learii

I would buy the game if the game come oversea

  • Musashi234

……Soooooooooooo Maybe you can bring it over here…Yes…Thank you….Seriously

  • Göran Isacson

So a game in a franchise which they have been notoriously unwilling to bring over sells LESS than a previous game… and people think Capcom would be willing to bring THIS one over?

    You sweet Summer children.

  • Hines Green III

My only gripe with SB is no online co-op at this point. I do remember tons for forums complaining about that a lot for SB3
And no dual audio too, but that’s another tale.

  • Richard Tooth

“Sony doesn’t allow games without English voice acting to be released in the West on retail discs.” Is this true? :0

  • Dandre Walton

Hell sell it in usa ill buy em…
