Dark Souls II Sold Through 90% Of Its Shipment In Japan

By Ishaan . March 24, 2014 . 12:00pm

Last week, Namco Bandai released Dark Souls II in Japan, and the game sold 255,197 copies on PlayStation 3 and another 5,950 copies on the Xbox 360, for a combined total of 261,147 copies.

Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared in their weekly report that Dark Souls II sold through 90.19% of its shipment on PS3. That means the game was nearly sold out at launch in Japan, and a few stores likely experienced shortages of the title.

Dark Souls II’s performance is very similar to that of its predecessor’s. When it was released back in 2011, Dark Souls sold 279,567 copies on the PlayStation 3, and sold through 90.09 of its shipment.

Media Create added in their report that some retailers indicated fans of the first Dark Souls comprised the majority of people that bought Dark Souls II. This means that the new game has managed to retain fans of the previous one.

Finally, Media Create share, the first game in the Souls franchise, 2009’s Demon’s Souls, eventually went on to sell 384,000 copies between its regular and bargain editions at retail. Meanwhile, Dark Souls ended up at 363,000 copies. Given that the series appears to be retaining its fans from game to game, it’s likely that Dark Souls II will end up doing similar numbers in the long run. Congratulations are in order for From Software.

dark souls changed a lot of stuff dark souls 2 brought back a lot of stuff from demon’s souls that was absent

Man, something about Demon’s Souls that got me hooked that I wasn’t able to get again when playing Dark Souls. Which is why I’m holding off for Dark Souls 2 in the meantime.

hmmm will pc edition include new area/mob ot exact same as console version?

btw whats everyone’s opinion on Dark soul 2? i think gameplay and mechanic wise the game definately improved like removing humanity and changing stupid curse but i think i still perfer Dark soul most out of three because of the dark atmosphere, lore and boss/level design

I really really enjoyed Dark Souls II but I’ll have to agree with you. Ultimately, the little things(it’s all in the details) make it not as good as it’s predecessor but hey, that’s not a bad thing because the first game IMO is one of the best games ever made. Dark Souls II is still a pretty darn good game and worthy of the Souls name.
PS: I actually like the way Curse was handled in Dark Souls.

instant death and health deduction unless you get pardon or use a expensive stone? thats way too hash XD

        • Tarkovsky

Yea. I’m a sucker for punishment haha. I don’t know but something about status effects like curse, petrify and poison in DkSII seem more like an annoyance then a penalty. A ring of binding practically nullifies curses while popping a regular life gem nullifies poison. That’s one of the reasons why I dislike the fact that they tried to combine elements of DeS and DkS. Can’t blame them though. They had loads of pressure from hardcore DeS fans.
