Cave Story Creator’s Next Game, Kero Blaster, Out May 11th

By Ishaan . April 1, 2014 . 11:31am

Kero Blaster (originally Gero Blaster), the next game from Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, will be released on May 11th, 2014 for PC and iPhone.

Playism, the Japanese indie-focused localization and distribution group, will help bring the game to PC. The PC version of the game will be available via the Playism platform. Playism are also assisting with the PC release of La-Mulana 2 and Astebreed, and will bring all three games to the Indie Megabooth at PAX East.

Last year, Nicalis, who have published a number of Amaya’s games on the Nintendo eShop also teased a version of Kero Blaster running on the Nintendo 3DS.

Oh wow, this game actually looks very nice aesthetically. And knowing that this is the creator of Cave Story, I can expect that the gameplay will be tight and frantic. Heck, it’s even got a lot of the same battle elements of Cave Story.

The original Cave Story traumatized me a bit on how hard and intense some levels were. Can’t wait to tackle new challenges in this one!

Tell me about it. To this day I still haven’t beaten Ballos….. On normal difficulty. Not because of Ballos specifically, but because of the butes before him. Those flying butes are devil spawn. Evil incarnate. The harbingers of death.
        I hate them all.

I will get this for PC, but I hope it gets ported to some gaming systems too.

I was going to say the game looks shittier than Cave Story, but then I remembered the Cave Story I’m thinking of is the very, very enhanced version on Steam. It looks better than Vanilla Cave Story.

Cave Story has gone through quite a few facelifts, both getting updated 16 bit era sprites for the Wii Ware release (which are also available in the Steam version) and getting a full on polygonal revamp for the 3DS edition.

But honestly? I always prefer to play with the original sprites and music. So much of what makes the game special is that in every aspect it’s a reflection of just one guy’s interests, passion, and capabilities. I’d rather play Mr. Amaya’s Cave Story than Cave Story that’s gone through the hands of dozens of people piecemeal hired by NiCALIS.

I’m interested, but I’ll wait for it to go onto a more convenient platform

Doesn’t look as cute and Quote or Curly Brace, or, my favourite character, Sue Sakamoto.
But it still looks like a lot of fun to play.
