The 3rd Super Robot Taisen Z Gets Off To A Good Start

By Ishaan . April 21, 2014 . 11:01am

The 3rd Super Robot Taisen Z: Time Prison Chapter was released in Japan last week, and the game sold 142,433 copies on PlayStation 3, and another 128,236 copies on PS Vita.

Japanese sales tracker Media Create reports that the PS3 version of the game sold through 75.93% of its shipment. Meanwhile, the Vita version sold through 81.39% of its shipment.

Both versions of the game together sold 270,669 copies in total. This isn’t as high as the sales of 2011’s The 2nd Super Robot Taisen Z: Destruction Chapter on PSP, which sold 307,000 copies in its launch week.

However, sales were very close to those of 2012’s The 2nd Super Robot Taisen Z: Regeneration Chapter, which sold around 265,000 copies at launch. This means that Bandai Namco have managed to successfully retain fans of the franchise despite the platform switch from PSP.

Since past sales of these games have ended up around 1.3 times as high as launch week sales, one can estimate that The 3rd Super Robot Taisen Z will go on to sell around 350,000 copies in the long run.

  • Buitronthecrazy .

spoiler: the final boss is not an original…

    • MrTyrant

You mean that huge creature right? Because I saw one full of teeth. Oh never mind that was the epilogue midboss I believe.

      • bassgs435

yep ,that’s from the epilogue. the game’s proper final battle is Gurren Lagann’s final battle

        • MrTyrant

I just expect that dude not to be the final boss in Z3.2 to avoid being similar to Gaioh but looks cool already as antagonist.

Asakim true powers as a fucking final boss of the whole Z please D:

          • bassgs435

to avoid spoiling too much , I’ll only say it’s possible for that to happen and I would love it

          • MrTyrant

I spoiled everything in /m/ so I know what happened at the epilogue. Still don’t know the bunch of “???” talking at the end…

    • Lynx

We haven’t had one of those since Classic.

iirc, F Final if I remember right. I think it was Kaworu, Sharpio or the Guests.

    • Duo Maxwell

What was the final boss of Z2.1?

      • Mr_SP

Gaioh. And the boss of Z2.2 was… Gaioh. But in a different form!

        • MrTyrant

          Such a twist!

    • s07195

Maybe they wanna avoid the whole Gaioh thing where he comes back a second time. :/

  • Tom_Phoenix

The thing that will determine whether or not Z3.1 is a success is how well it will sell in subsequent weeks. Z2.1 didn’t really have a great first week, but managed to sell an additional 150k copies later on, so the final LTD sales were quite decent (even if they didn’t reach Z1’s numbers).

I’m curious to see how Z3.1 will do.

  • Slickyslacker

Because everyone rode on the impression of OG2, more or less.

It’s like how FF 13 sold so well, because nobody knew what to anticipate. I’m just saying, even if it sold through most of its initial shipments, most SRT fans are disappointed with this entry.

    • HentaRobot

Most? You mean those trolls at 2ch? Only a vocal minority don’t like this game, and they’re the ones that are complaining over and over. The rest of us are enjoying this game.

And I find it silly that people are comparing this with OG 2nd. The OG series are meant to have flashy over-the-top attack animations, while the main entries tend to have simpler and more realistic animations.

      • Slickyslacker

Eh. I mean, yeah, the animation and aesthetic complaints are rather silly, it’s more the series removing that got to me.

and I didn’t say that I disliked it myself.

        • HentaRobot

Oh, it’s not like I’m bashing you or anything, so no worries there. I’m just pointing out at your point that says most fans will be disappointed.

I agree that this game has some minor flaws, but at the end it seems many are enjoying this game, including me.

      • MrTyrant

I prefer the animation in OG 2nd. They did a cool mix of 3D and 2D but I think that will cost so much in Z where a lot of mech from different animes gather and since you are already attracting people with those shows they make it simple on purpose.

I dont really mind I only complain in Z2 when they remove it the squad system. I loved that shit D:

    • Gemini Saga Sama

I’m playing it right now, and it’s mile better then Z2 and Z2.2.
Most people who are disappointed probably had too high of an expectations for it.
But really, this game is setting up some amazing things for Z3.2….which if it delivers should be remembered as one of the best srw games in history.
