Xseed On Localizing More Corpse Party Games

By Ishaan . June 24, 2014 . 5:32pm

Xseed recently announced that they’re publishing the updated PC version of the first Corpse Party game in North America. Following the announcement, a fan asked on Xseed’s Facebook page if they intend to localize Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient and Corpse Party: Blood Drive. Here’s what they said:

Welp, more Corpse Party is great, so how about [Hysteric Birthday 2U], Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient, and Blood Drive? Oh, and no need to dub, the Japanese cast is perfect!

We will see what we can do. And totally agreed about the Japanese voice-overs being perfect – we couldn’t do an English dub even if we wanted to due to the awesome 3D recording technique that Japan uses where multiple microphones at various angles are used for recording, which is a technique that we can’t easily replicate for our English voice-overs.

Something to note is that Xseed have already touched upon Hysteric Birthday 2U and Blood Drive in the past. In November 2013, Xseed stated that they weren’t going to be localizing Hysteric Birthday, while on the subject of Blood Drive, they expressed interest in bringing the game over.

Another point to note is that Xseed have also said that Brandish: The Dark Revenant and Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter are likely going to be their final PSP projects, unless Brandish somehow performs incredibly well on the PS Vita.

I’m really not worried about this franchise, we might not get the spinoff comedy titles but we’ll probably get all of the other main games in due time. They’re just waiting for Dead Patient to be finished, or at least more complete, before attempting anything I think.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Honestly I’m bummed about the comedy thing because it introduces so many characters

  • I-e-on

last psp projects… does that mean Sora no Kiseki the 3rd might not come over?

    • JonathanisPrimus

When would that even come out? 2017?

    • Brandonmkii

      Well, there’s always PC..

    • DesmaX

      There’s the PC version too

    • nonscpo

Agreed now is a terrible time to drop PSP game releases for PSN, especially if were suppose to enter a digital only download future.

  • Shippoyasha

“We’ll see” is like their code word for saying “It’s coming”.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Possibly but they could always run into a snag like with grand knight history

  • Balalaika

I really want to play Corpse Party Blood Drive but my understanding of the Japanese language is poor, I hope that Xseed pulls through and brings this out to the western market.

  • Greg

Keep localising those games. I’ll be here waiting until you can get around to Corpse Party 2.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

Yeah I guess dummy head mics are that widely used here.

  • NegativeZero

I really don’t see the point of them bringing over the old Corpse Party PC doujin version. The updated PSP version that 5pb put together is better in every way. Professional voice acting, better art, better atmosphere.

I’m not opposed to the idea of getting a PC version, but I’d be pretty worried that the old low-budget indie version would reflect really badly on the quality of the games in general, since it’ll be the first exposure for a lot of people in the Steam audience.

    • wyrdwad

The PSP version is technically better in many regards, sure, but the PC version has its own unique charm as well. The indie voice-acting is actually really good (and a totally different interpretation of some of the characters), and there are a decent number of scenes exclusive to the PC version, including a far superior retelling of the Corpse Party: Book of Shadows chapter “Tooth” done in the style of the original game.

The stuff that’s shared between the two versions, too, isn’t really THAT different at its core. I think people experiencing the game for the first time via the PC version will actually have a good experience from it — it’s extremely comparable to the PSP version and is, in general, a very good version of the game in its own right.

      • NegativeZero

I guess the PSP is basically done for now anyway, so if there’s any future for the series then PC would be as good a place for it to continue as anywhere else. And if moving the franchise to PC means that getting subsequent games out is more viable then I’m all for it.

      • darke

Not to mention a PC version will probably sell better on steam then a digital-only PSP version; given the hatred shown around these parts whenever a title is announced to be digital-only. :(

    • DizzyGear

Getting the game out on Steam means more exposure of the Corpse Party francise in the west which can only be good in my opinion.
Plus I’m pretty sure Xseed will spruce up the game with steamworks for acievements, trading cards and cloud saving.

  • Mika Moreno

I really love Corpse Party, and Blood Drive looks great. I hope it comes over!

  • Brion Valkerion

Hope they at least bring them to PC or other platforms the game was a unique and delightful surprise.

  • Kornelious

XSeed sure has been on a roll lately. I have no doubt;s that they will localize this in due time :D

Though hey said the The Legend of Heroes SC will be their last PSP project…….Does that mean we won’t be getting 3rd!? X(

Though the others have already been remade including the Sky trilogy so maybe they are looking into that?

    • MrTyrant

3rd was on pc originally like the others except Zero/Ao which debuted on psp, so they probably would localize the third one for pc/steam I bet.

  • Hours Left

I hope they plan on still releasing the PSP version of Trails in the Sky: The 3rd. (Or at least the PS3 version.)

  • Wilder

The minute Blood Drive put on for pre-order, I’ll be there and press the buy button first.

  • Keep localizing Corpse Party games, and I”ll keep buying them. Of course, my biggest hope is for Blood Drive…

About no more PSP projects–I recall there being the rumor of another otome game in the works? Did that not pan out then? I remember people were talking about English Detective Mysteria, but I don’t recall an official announcement.

    • Jedahaw

Who wants to talk about Murders?!~

  • Jin Kisaragi

I want Corpse Party: Blood Drive to get localized. I was really hoping The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Third Chapter got localized. I really wanted to play The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series but if the Third Chapter isn’t getting released then I won’t be playing it.

    • DesmaX

SC has a “conclusive” ending, so no need to do that.

3rd is it’s own thing, but it links to all future releases of the series.

      • Jin Kisaragi

I didn’t know that but if that’s the case I will play them. I still think it’s a shame that they might not localize The Third Chapter. I was just wondering if all the chapters in The Trails of the Sky series are connected in some way.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Third Chapter is kind of a gaiden game–It has different protagonists. it’s one really long dungeon ala Ys Origins, as opposed to the fully fleshed out world found in FC and SC. It’s not bad, but it’s the weakest of the trilogy and you’re not missing much.

But anyway, you never know, they’re putting FC and SC on Steam. Who’s to say they won’t do the same with 3rd?

  • Yagami Mao

  • Go2hell66

Well there goes any hope of me ever playing grand knights history

    • Anthony Birken

There should be a basic english patch somewhere I believe. I’ve played it before. Or even if there isn’t, it’s fairly easy to play.

    • Juuu

Sadly, I think that dream died not so much with this, but with Vanillaware being too busy to insert the existing English text, and ESPECIALLY with the games’ online servers being shut down in Japan proper. That said, you can probably enjoy the game’s offline mode if you import it—the title only runs for a measly five dollars or so if you know where to look. c:

  • Kyosuke Yoshino

I think Corpse Party 2U was great, it’s a shame if they won’t localize it, however it’s kinda understandable.

I personally can’t wait for Blood Drive!

  • Jadfish

They sure are bringing out a lot of very niche games right now (as in, more niche than usual).

I hope it is profitable for them.

  • DyLaN

Still (a bit) bummed that we are not getting Unchained Blades Exxiv/Hysteric Birthday 2U. Though getting Dead Patient and Blood Drive is fine as well.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

“we couldn’t do an English dub even if we wanted to due to the awesome 3D recording technique that Japan uses where multiple microphones at various angles are used for recording, which is a technique that we can’t easily replicate for our English voice-overs.”

Whaaat? Even I’ve got a pair of binaural microphones, and I’m only semi-pro!

I’m only kidding, XSEED. I think you guys are amazing.

    • Luis Edgar Flores Gutierrez

More that they don’t have money for doing that.

  • I’ll get blood drive if it gets localized

  • Aristides

I hope Brandish does really well for them, I would really like more unlocalized PSP titles.

  • InsertOffensiveUsernameHere

    Just get them localized, already.

Also, any plans on making a remake of the first one with Blood Drive’s engine?

  • Jan Daryll Palanca

THE PSP STILL LIVES…….through the PS Vita!
Hope to see more from Xseed working on other awesome yet unfortunate PSP (to Vita) titles such as…(insert Japanese game that you wanted so bad!) Fate/Extra CCC and Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki……. a guy can dream can’t he?

  • Universe

Where’s my Trails in the Sky on Steam?

  • Japanese > English Dub thats the spirit Xseed!

  • Kudan

That’s cool but man i’d really like to hear something about TitS SC.

  • Oh man, XSEED. Make it happen! My money and mind are ready for your games :)

  • Armageddon

will i sh*t my pants of fear or die of moe?

  • Proud Soviet

Just to clarify they are localizing blood drive?

  • ChaosDude

Holy crap. Thank you Xseed, I love you. lol
